SO does the tough love thing. He's a recovering meth addict & I guess the picking really bothers him. He also won't watch movies that are about hard drug use

Yes, I would consider it an addiction. It's a stress/pain reliever and it can be very difficult to stop. I would say you're a recovering cutter.

Good for you for not cutting for 2 years!

I'm a recovering heroin addict. I've been clean a long time but once and a while, an urge creeps up. So I know how hard it can be.

8)
Just a thought, do you think getting a tattoo is similar to cutting? For example I like the look of them (of course) but the feeling is what I like the most. It can be painful but it's like a good pain. I also feel extremely relaxed & calm after

Sorry if this makes no sense at all

i've actually heard of people replacing the cutting addiction with ink addiction. i think because it's so similar but you get something pretty from it instead of ugly scars.

OMG I hated the feeling of getting a tat. LOL It just goes to show how different everyone experiences things. I have heard others say things similar to what you said. I could wait for it to be over & healed.

I think that's why so many people say it is "addicting". You would probably get the same endorphin rush during/after, so I would think it would be the same.

Did you ever find yourself snapping until you bruised? I tried that and found myself not stopping until I had horrible bruises. I also noticed that when I am in a harming frame of mind I get injured more often, ie fall or something similar.

no... when i started making welts and enjoying it, i realized it wasn't going to help me, that it was probably going to encourage it or that i'd be replacing one addiction with another and didn't need that...:?

When I was first recovering so to speak I would be really careless when I was like cooking dinner. I would get all sorts of Knicks and cuts and burns from things.

I actually am on the fence with it. Tell me if my logic is whacked.
You can drink alcohol and not be an alcoholic right? But can you cut without abusing? It's self harm at its core so from the start its an addiction. Now of course there are probably some out there who used to struggle hard with it but just one day stopped and never really think of it again. I wouldn't consider those type addicts. See where I'm straddling the fence or am I making no sense at all? It's early so my thought process is failing me ATM.

I don't know that it is an addiction, but I would definitely consider it a symptom of mental illness.
