Shared laundry room? :/ FTM Michelle :) 17 kids; Ohio 314 posts

Okay so I barely use my apartments shared laundry room because they just look gross and my clothes come out smelling like they are not clean. I for some reason have no problem with using my local laundry mat. But my question is, is there any way I can sanitize the shared laundry washer and dryers before using them? (Also I am quite a germaphobe) Please no harsh comments and thanks in advanced for replying.

Put vinegar in the washer and run an empty load.

How much vinegar? and will/should it get rid of that dreaded musky smell?

You can run a cycle with vinegar or bleach.

Depends on how bad your machine smells. Try adding just 2 cups if that doesn't work add the whole bottle.

I agree. It WILL sanitize it...and I'd get the cheapo white vinegar for that. It will work just fine.

Now say I already washed 2 loads in it, would you still use those clothes and would they be considered clean or would you clean the washer and re run them through before wearing them?

Unless you have some reason to think there is a contaminant I would wear them.

Just smelling a bit musky enough reason? or am I just nuts?

If it were me & my clothes smelled musty, I'd rewash them because smells annoy me, but not because I would think they weren't clean or healthy to wear. If it bothers you, then wash them. I would not inherently think it means there IS something wrong per se, other than someone isn't being mindful to remove wet clothing promptly & has gotten the washer a bit stinky.

I am sorry you have to share a washer...it was annoying enough when I had a relative living here that would leave wet loads...so I can only imagine.

It is very common here. Many places don't have laundry facilities in the individual apartments. They will have a room in the basement for people to share & pay for.

I found it was easier to go to the laundry mat. I was able to get it done faster & brought it home all folded. The laundry mats also are cleaned often & don't end up with the musty smell
