They sell a bag of big tablets in the laundry soap aisle at Walmart. I can't recall the name of them. Kind of like those tablets you use in the toilet. It frees up any gunk, goo, hair, mildew. You run them without clothes on the longest cycle the machine has and it dissolves away by the end. I do them in my machine every few months just because we have kind of hard water and I feel like there may be build up.

If you put a cup of vinegar in with your wash it is sanitizing AND it removes hard water build up. You can even use it as a soak to remove hard water scale on faucets - you put in in a baggie & tape it up around the nozzle so it is submerged & leave overnight. Int eh morning it will rinse right off.
