This is one of those parenting moments where I don't know what to do.

Background: my son is 3.5. He's been peeing on his own for almost a year. He absolutely refused to pee in the actual toilet and not his potty until I hid the potty. He tried to pee in the bathtub until i pulled him over to the toilet. He closed his eyes, peed and the rest is history.

He won't poop in the toilet. He will sit on it, so he's not afraid, but he won't do it. Whenever he needs to poop, he'll go get a diaper from his drawer, bring it to me, tell me he needs to poop, I'll put it on him, he'll go upstairs to the bathroom and poop, then call me when he's done. He knows exactly how pooping works.

This past week we counted down the diapers until there was none left, today. He was excited to poop on the toilet until it came time. At noon today he asked for a diaper, I reminded him we didnt have any. He sat on the toilet for a minute, jumped off and told me he didnt want to poop.

It's now 6:15. That was SIX hours ago. He isn't acting in pain, but he obviously needs to poop. Do I stand firm and make him poop on the toilet, or do i give him a diaper so he doesn't feel sick and crampy and potentially hurt himself? (I actually hid all the diapers so i have some left). If i give in, he'll know that I'm a pushover and he can hold it until I give in.

What do I do?

I think I would stand firm and encourage the toliet. He clearly knows and understands.

Stick to your guns and make him poop on the toilet. He will get used to it.

Give him the diaper. Its not worth him getting constipated or having large BMs that can cause hemherroids

This! He understands. He knows when he has to poop. He is just being stubborn. I would try to encourage him to go. Maybe promise him an ice cream?

My son was similar and wouldn't poop on the toilet. I ended up putting a laxative suppository up his rear, then sitting him on the toilet and not letting him off till he pooped. One time was all it took. Just have to stand firm. My son even commented that "the snake came out of his butt" smh, but it did work... No problems since and that was 2 years ago when he was 3.5

I would have never given him a diaper for that to begin with. Stick to your guns!

Well... He'd learn consequences of holding it in though. You can't just let a kid train you (the parent) like that. He'd connect the dots that if he didn't go on the toilet then it causes discomfort.

I will agree to disagree.

I thought if sit there forever! He was so damn stubborn, but it worked like a charm. I was so done with trying to potty train at 3.5, so I did whatever it took lol
