I think a lot of people in the worst neighborhoods here feel defeated. There's also a really awful drug problem. Most of those kids have grown up seeing prostitutes and drug addicts and people shot, and are traumatized from it just like a wealthy kid in the suburbs would be. Unfortunately the parents don't have the resources or knowledge on how to treat that trauma, and it just becomes a way of life.

Gotta' love that war on drugs... wish all that money went to actually helping these people instead of putting them behind bars. Here's an example: my brother is a heroine addict who was spiraling out of control... we got him to admit that he needed help a couple of times, but he didn't have insurance. The state rehabilitation centers (the ones who don't need insurance) didn't have any beds open for 6 weeks. Do you think a heroine addict is going to piddle around for 6 weeks waiting for a bed? Absolutely not. Now he is in prison with hardened criminals. How the hell does that make sense?

The system is so totally fucked. I hope your brother is able to get sober and stay sober in jail, it's so hard seeing someone you love go through that.

Thanks, me too. Hopefully this will be his bottom. Here's to hoping he doesn't score in prison!

Did they offer him rehab instead of jail or anything? They usually have meetings he can get to in jail.

I've been through this whole dance with a lot of friends and family, and even had a problem myself when I was younger. Right now SIL is in holding in Florida. She was arrested a month ago for theft, was told she could either go to rehab or jail, chose rehab; and then for some reason was given unsupervised probation. Was out for a week before she got arrested for felony robbery.
We still don't know the whole story, but I'm just glad we know where she is now and that she can't do much to hurt herself right now

No, he was actually arrested on a felony DWI charge which is really just a symptom of the drug addiction, so they didn't offer him anything but 2 years in prison since he wasn't arrested for drugs.

My school was very violent. In fact during my English class when the teacher asked the class what comes at the end of a sentence the class yelled "AN APPEAL"
