If you're married, have a child, and then your husband joins the military, what exactly happens from there?
Do you have to live on base?

I'm just so lost when it comes to military stuff so any comments are welcome. :)

as far as i know u do not have to live on base. U and your child will automatically be on his insurance. once he gets thru basic and AIT and stationed somewhere u will be able to move with him = )

No you don't have to live on base, they will provide you a housing allowance if you choose to live off base.

Quoting Glo♥:" No, you can live off base and if you do you that you receive more money BAH and BAS. Depending on where ... [snip!] ... on where he's station it might take a while to get into base housing as well but if you live on base you don't receive BAH."

No clue what BAH and BAS are. :P

Nope, you can live anywhere near post/base. You'll both become dependents and enroll in deers to get tri care. Once he's in basic that is, you'll get a housing allowance so that'll help you live off post. But that's just about it. =\. And once he's in basic he will get basic pay, separation pay, an housing pay based on where his home of record is(bah). If you choose to live on post once he's stationed wherever they'll take your bah and just basic pay plus the food pay he gets and a few extra whatever they have on the les (leave and earning statement).

No we get bas and bah but just the bah gets taken out of the check. No the les. Last time I looked we got bas. =\. I hope it's not fucked up. Cause its been a year from living on post.

Thanks for your input! When exactly does all of that go into effect? After he finishes basic?

You're not automatically enrolled into the system once he marries. Whoever said that was wrong.

Living off post can depend on where you live. Sometimes it's better to live on post. You'll get housing allowance to pay for rent and utilities. The amount depends on rank and location.

While he's there. Like the 1st week. He left nov 11 we got our 1st check dec 1 with bah basic pay I think it was the 2nd check when he got the separation pay.

Pretty sure she means. He'll fill out paper work before he leaves with your and child info and do more paper work 1st week of basic. You'll receive something called deers packet. You'll have to go enroll in Deers that's tri care your insurance and get your military ID. Keep in mind dental is not part of this.
