Breast pump and insurance question afantastic 2 kids; Dallas, Texas 588 posts

I've read a few women saying they have gotten breast pumps via their insurance. I was curious if anyone has gotten a breast pump through Medicaid? I live in Texas and currently have Amerigroup via North Star Medicaid and I'm just curious if anyone has had a similar experience and gotten the pump through mediciad?

Thanks.

I know certain divisions of mass health (Medicaid in ma) will cover a breast pump.

I think WIC can provide you with a pump..

here medicaid doesn't cover, unless it's medically necessary and WIC will loan one if you are working or going to school. Call the number on the back of your card.

If you have Medicaid in tx you qualify for wic. Wic will loan you a pump, and after a couple of months if you're successfully pumping they will give you one to keep!

I go to pick up the one they're giving me this week.

Some do, some don't. Some only do in certain situations, like if your child has a health problem. Mine didn't cover it at all, for any reason. Many, even if they cover, will only cover a manual or something like that also. You really just have to call and ask.

What kind? And how do they know you're still actually pumping? Cuz you're not requesting formula I suppose...?

Yeah. I just let them know that I've been breastfeeding only and pumping twice a day to get a supply of breast milk for when I go back to work.

The pump that they loaned me is a big green one that they give disposable parts to you. Idk if every clinic is the same, but the pump I got works really well. I don't know what brand the pump that they give to you to keep is though.

Thanks,

I went to WIC for formula for my first, but since I am breast feeding I hadn't thought to talk to them.

That's really cool, I'm not due until December, but I'm definitely going to ask about this at my next appt! I have a Medela Pump n Style that has been amazing, but it's 8 years old and has pumped through 3 kids (plus a couple months when my friend borrowed it), so it's getting a bit worn.
