Sadly... Yes. I just got my permanent residency last month! So glad that's over! Now we have to do DH's for the US.

I'm ignorant about the topic. I don't know how your system differs from ours, but ill bet your system has more common sense in its rules than ours. Our system is seriously flawed. And, that is one reason why illegals illegals have little respect for it.

basically we intercept the boats as they come though Indonesia ... take all the people off them ... sink the boat ... and then lock them up in offshore detention centres until they're processed.

Where did you get the facts from, not the age.com.au part but the other part?
It's very wrong. The facts are entirely untrue.

I'm not on the fence. People are coming here by boat because they are desperate. People are rioting because, amongst other things, children are being kept in detention.
I am disgusted by the decision to turn asylum seekers away.

They wont be able to do it, Howard tried and failed because they just threw their kids in the waters.

They shouldn't be turned away at all.

All over to be honest ... news, radio, forums, newspapers etc ... not sure which fact comes from where.

A lot of people are outraged, and not just mostly asylum seekers. It's mostly Australians, in fact it's every single person I know irl.

but we're not turning them away, we're just processing them differently. If we were turning them away we would have taken Sri Lanka up on their offer of sinking the boats before they got out of their waters.

It's nice that you have the sea as a formidable barrier.
What do you do with people who come on a student visa and don't leave?

Sorry but I disagree. They never threw their kids in the water. The children overboard saga was found to be untrue.

I know my grandmother had three children born in aus and wet back to England leaving her husban and 4 children here. She was only meant to go for so long and she overstayed and then they would not let her back in the county except for travel. Absolute bullshit.

We're not talking about illegal immigrants as a whole, we are talking about asylum seekers/ refugees.
