We like to use family names when naming our kids. But I don't think a middle name is useless if it has no meaning. I am sure if you like the name enough to use it in your childs name then that is all that matters.

My son is Alexander Paul, Paul is DH names. My next son will be Benjamin Shaun and Shaun is my brother who passed. Our daughter will be Genevieve Amelia, her middle name is just a name I like, her first is after my great grandmother, and I love the name. So no it's about what you like and what you choose.

My daughters middle name is Lucille. After no one, we picked it be aide it's beautiful and sound good with her first name. We picked names the same way this time. I didn't want to use names after family members because I knew people would feel left out and I didn't want to deal with that.
