I assume *most* people tell their children they cannot use what we see typically as swear words, shit, f**k, etc....

But do you have any other words that are also on the "Don't say that" list?

We have many that are dependent on how they are used. My kids can't call people stupid, but the word isn't banned from use. They can't tell someone they hate them or say they hate a person, but they can say they hate a particular food or something.... I don't allow words like retarded though, or retard.

Just curious....

My girls aren't allowed to say Stupid or Hate. They say Silly, or 'I don't like' instead. They also think Heck is a "naughty" word. I'm not sure where they got that one from, but I'll go with it. I don't like them using silly words for their body parts. A vagina is not a mickey or a rosie. A p***s is not a doodle or a willy. Feet or feet, not footsies. lol.

They're not allowed to say they're going to kill or shoot anyone. Or hit anyone. Or maime or hurt anyone. DS is bad about that.
They're not allowed to call people fat. So they use the word fluffy.
They're not allowed to talk about how people look.

The above BUT we restrict "stupid" and "hate" a bit more. She is 4 1/2 and it just sounds too harsh from the mouths of babes.
As she gets older, I'd allow "retarded" as an adjective, but again, too harsh for a little one.

You don't want her to learn another language like Spanish because Dora bugs you?

Oh yes! That isn't allowed. I'm sure there are other harsh words that others will mention.
I have a cousin who doesn't allow "crap." To me, crap is acceptable.

They're not supposed to use words disrespectfully. That's the extent of it.

DD is obviously not allowed to use any curse words, but she recently told me "Duh" and I told her to not say that, that it's rude. The most important thing to me is that she speaks respectfully and intelligently. I also try to discourage her from using filler words (like, umm, etc) but I don't make a big deal out of it.

Of course the usual cuss words. I don't like DD telling her brother to shut up or say something is stupid. I have to get on my niece and nephew for saying it in the house. I also do not allow the N word for any reason at all. Someone taught it to DD once I got so pissed off about it.

We don't allow words that demean others or has a history of being demeaning. We don't cuss, so that's also not allowed. We try to encourage words that respectfully express feelings, emotions, etc. for example- instead of saying, "Ugh this is so stupid," because of frustration or whatever, we would encourage saying something like " I'm really frustrated or upset right now and need help to figure this out." She might not say it in those words exactly but somethig similar. We've done this type of reframing with my daughter since she was really young ( before becoming verbal but able to indicate whether what she needs), and its surprising how she's caught on.
