In-law carseat issues (long) *beck-i* {JAS08} 3 kids; Prattsburgh, New York 4808 posts

My in-laws watch our kids two days a week to help us save on cost of daycare. I could never thank them enough for this but they always take our kids in their vehicle without car seats! My boys are 7 and 4 (almost 5) and clearly still need to be in car seats/booster seats. I still have them both harnessed in Britax car seats due to their size and the safety factor. We have asked them to not do this and they continue to do this against our wishes. They have just started to "hide" the fact they are going anywhere and the kids tell me at night when I get home.

I don't want to really be a b***h about it but that is my next step because it is causing DH and I to have arguments about the whole situation. They are messing with the safety of my kids. I have even offered to install the car seats before I leave in the morning so they can go wherever they want.. they decline stating they are not going to go anywhere and then they end up going anyways. I understand they are old school and I tried to explain them the benefits of car seats at any age and they didn't seem to get it.

Do you guys have any useful links I might be able to send them or remedies to try and fix this problem besides finding someone else to watch the kids. TIA

I would just install the seats when they get dropped off.. that way they don't have an excuse not to use them

Do they meet the height and weight requirements of a regular booster?

I'd tell them that of they can't respect your wishes and the safety of your children, you'll find someone else to watch them who will.

I don't have any links, but I'd just install the seats before you go every day regardless if they say they need them or not. I doubt they will uninstall them just to spite you.

My 7 year old is almost ready by size and weight but his ADHD makes it hard to get him to sit still and properly in a seatbelt. My 4 year old is not even close he is still to small to be in a booster.

Then I would either install them when you get there, or find a new sitter.

Thanks everyone I agree that I will just start to install car seats before I leave on those days and just hope they use them. Luckily my kids know how to buckle themselves in properly. We have also told the kids they are not aloud to get in the car with anyone unless they have a car seat. Hopefully they will help the situation by not going with them if they try and take them without proper restraints. If it continues I am going to have to just see if I can find someone else because I hate feeling like my kids are in danger and they don't think it is a big deal because "their kids all survived without car seats"
