How many pounds should be okay for me to carry DS without a infant insert? I heard minimum weight is 7 for the carrier.

The insert is for 7 to 12 pounds. (but keep in mind babies come in different shapes and sizes so you may need it longer. )

I never used an infant insert. I used a folded blanket & swaddled the baby. I didn't have it as a newb with my 1st & with my 2nd it seemed pointless to pay so much for something I'd use such a short time. You just want to make sure there is no way they can come out the leg holes. A blanket (or two depending on thickness, etc) can be used. It's not like you are running or jogging with them in there. Use your best judgement.

Oh I forgot also I think you are supposed to use it until your baby is 4 months.

Oh Lordy then I guess I need it. He's 1 month now. Around 8-9lbs.

You can always roll up a blanket, but I also see the inserts selling pretty cheap if you buy them used. =)
