Baby falling off the couch HamHam 18 kids; India 3485 posts

My 5-month old was being restless so I nursed him to help him settle down before bed. We were laying down on the couch ( big, big mistake). We both fell asleep ( which I didnt plan in!) until woken up by his little self rolling off and falling off the couch. He was crying quite a bit but calmed down and returned to his usual, happy self. I checked to see if he's bleeding or if anything seems dislocated or broken. It's a pretty low couch and the floor is carpeted, but im still super worried. He just fell asleep. Has anyone dealt with this sort of thing? I feel so incredibly terrible for this happening. Should I take him to the Dr/hospital? What should I look for to make sure nothing's wrong?

He'll be fine. I've done it a few times. No big deal .

I've done it with all 3 of my kids.
It happens. Don't beat yourself up over it.
Babies bounce back pretty well, he'll be fine :)

My daughter rolled off our bed about a month ago :/ scared me to death but she was okay. I checked for bruises and bleeding, she had a small bump on her forehead but was otherwise fine. She only cried for a minute then was back to being happy. I called my mom (a nurse) and asked he same question, if I should take her in. She said as long as she isn't crying for more than an hour and the bump isn't inverted and no bleeding, then she's probably fine. I called my dr the next morning and he told me the same thing.

Make sure his eyes aren't dialated. If he seems fine, he probably is.

Happens to the best of us! LO was five months when he scototed off the bed when I dosed off. :/ I cried more than he did about it! He was cool though. Just scared more than anything!

If he is acting normal and settled down after the initial scare from the fall he should be fine! I've done it before, don't know many parents who haven't done this or something similar.

I've done it twice...with each child! Well, not when I was sleeping with them, but when I laid them down to do chores or cook.

He will be fine :)

lol. Wow. All my kids (except my youngest) have fallen of of something. The are always fine. Scared and shaken up but fine. Chill mamma. I woke up one night and my ds was sleeping on the floor. IDK how he even got there because he was only a couple months old. He wasn't crying so i think I just set him their in my sleep lol.

WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON WITH YOUR AVATAR!?!!?!?

lol

Anyways it happens. Seriously, it happens to all of us. Imagine this... one day Lily was on the futon in my room and I had no idea she could roll. I come back from the bathroom and my child is gone. I'm all "WTF WHERE IS MY CHILD?" She rolled off the futon, made no noise, and rolled under the futon! And then another time she rolled off the bed and it was high up, I felt like shit but ya know... babies are rubbery ;) They roll, they fall, they get bumps and bruises growing up from all sorts of stuff. They survive and they are okay :)

My LO was 8 months old I think and he fell of my sisters futon and smacked a toy and skinned his head and then hit the hard wood floor. He cried a little bit and then was 100% fine.

OMG that is crazy. lol
That reminds me of the time I had just got back from the hospital with my oldest ds. I co-slept and I slept topless. I felt something on my b**b I thought was a bug biting me and smacked it. Not hard but still.... it was my baby. I had completely forgot about him and he had found my b**b while I was sleeping! I felt terrible.

Hey ladies- thanks for all the responses and for normalizing this situation for me. I still feel bad, but it helps to know that I didn't make a monstrosity of a mistake. He's sound asleep now. I'll probably still check on him throughout the night because I'm an anxious weirdo like that. Thanks again for the feedback!
