How long is too long? LayLu 17 kids; Virginia 4007 posts26th Sep
SO's SIL is pregnant and is way over due.. her due date was September 14th, so as of today she's 12 days over due. I thought normally they induce after a week.. is this not right? I know she's been seeing a midwife but has also been seeing a doctor, she said they told her she's a very low risk pregnancy and they don't want to rush anything.. but she's almost two weeks over due and I feel like that's pushing it! Am I over reacting? I know SO's sister said that they don't like to wait until after 41 weeks because the baby can have their first bowel movement and possibly choke on it in the womb (no idea how true that is though, but his sister is also concerned). Has anyone heard of this? Am I freaking out for no reason? It's not even my pregnancy and I'm ready for that bun to come out of the oven.

Normally the max is 2 weeks overdue on average. Depending on the situation/dr's/ and how sure they are of her due date, they could let her go a little longer than 42 weeks, but she'll have to go in for more monitoring and non-stress tests.

:!: as long as she's being monitored, she's fine.

Yes, you are over reacting. I went 14 days overdue with my daughter. There could be confusion on the exact dates. The midwife and doctor she is seeing probably doing numerous testing to ensure that the quality of the placenta is good, the baby's HR is good, the fluid level is good. You are only technically overdue if you go over 42 weeks.

I went to 42w2d with my oldest. It is not unheard of for some doctors to let a pregnancy continue with careful monitoring when there are no other risk factors present to necessitate delivery. Most doctors induce after a week because the risk of meconium and fetal demise increase, but it's more to cover their own a*ses. So long as she's seeing her midwife and OB regularly and continuing to do kick counts, there's no reason to rush anything yet.

Thanks guys, hahah, I'm just so anxious for her! They live in North Carolina so we're just waiting to get the call but so far there's no signs that she'll be popping anytime soon. It's their first baby and SO's brother has been DYING to have a kid and has waited patiently until his wife was ready, I'm just so excited for them. :) On top of that, they have no idea what they're having because they wanted to wait and I want to give them all my hand-me-downs!
