Transverse kidneys in fetus Trey&Genesis'momma 4 kids; 4 angel babies; Somewhere, IN, United States 4659 posts

I think I have briefly talked about this in a PP but never got a reply from anyone on what it is. Basically at my anatomy scan, the dr and tech were both very concerned about the fact that my baby boy has transverse kidneys. I asked the tech what it meant and she basically told me, "Oh the dr will explain everything." Okay I kinda expected that since I know techs aren't really allowed to tell you anything concerning a diagnosis. But then the dr came in and never explained it. She just stared at the ultrasound image of his kidneys for a long time. I was PLANNING on asking about it at my next appt which was supposed to be yesterday. However, my DH has been really sick the last three days and was my ride to my appt so I had to reschedule for next week. But I have to admit, my curiosity is running wild here and I wanna know if anyone on here may be able to tell me what it means. Since they are transverse, it sounds like they are laying sideways, right? That's what I would think at least. But my real question is......does anyone know if this is going to cause problems with my baby after he's born?????? Also what causes the kidneys to develop sideways anyways? That just seems odd. I REALLY hope someone can explain a little bit about this to me cause it's really got me worried that something is wrong and I can't even inquire about it for another week. TIA.

I don't know anything about transverse kidneys but I have an extrarenal pelvis and it hasn't caused any serious issues.

Well I tried that. Lol. I can't find anything except where it talks about the development of kidneys but it doesn't really say if it can cause issues or anything. I even asked a nurse friend of mine and she said she couldn't tell me because she doesn't know enough about the development of the kidneys in a fetus to accurately tell me without giving me wrong information. So I'm just sitting here in limbo pretty much, worried that it's gonna be something bad.

Ok I googled transverse kidney or other conditions known as transverse kidneys and nothing really came up. Just how to look at a kidney in transverse sections. Are you sure they said he has transverse kidneys? I really can't find anything about it.

Yep....they even typed it on the ultrasound pic of the kidneys. That's my problem....I was coming up with the same results which is why I'm freaked out.

Yeah Idk. It's just the fact that none of my other kids had anything wrong and they kept saying they were concerned about him having transverse kidneys. Lol. I just don't get it!

think my uncle had that as a kid ...they did have to go in and reattach it right to the cavity wall ...it was giving him problems but after the surgery it was fixed....but ill double check with him ..im pretty sure that was it ..but just ask your Dr if it will cause any long term problems and will it have to be fixed when your little one is born ....keep us updated ..you can call a nurse an ask they will tell you ...

Okay thanks. I plan on it. Just hate waiting another week to find out what is going on.
