At what age/height/weight is it ok for a child NOT to be in a booster seat?
I've seen 2 pictures now on my facebook of kids under 4 just sitting on their butts in the backseat of a car wearing a seatbelt.

Are you sure they were being driven around that way? I have a few pictures of DD, who is 3, sitting like a "big girl" without a car seat. I'm not sure, what the age is, but I'm pretty sure 4 is way too young.

The general rule is 4 and 40 pounds but you're supposed to use the 5 pt harness until they reach the limit on the seat.

"No matter when your child finally outgrows her car seat, it's imperative that you don't skip the booster-seat step and go straight to using seat belts alone. Although many parents do this (94 percent, according to recent reports), it's a dangerous mistake. Why? Because a booster positions your vehicle's lap and shoulder belts correctly on your child's torso. Without it, the belts will be too high, falling across her belly and neck, where they can do serious damage in a crash. Given the fact that seat belts fit some shorter adults incorrectly, it's not surprising that most kids need to use booster seats until at least age 8.
When it comes to choosing a booster seat, be sure to select one that uses your auto's lapand shoulder belts (called a belt-positioning seat), rather than one designed for lap belts only (called a shield-style seat). In a crash, belt-positioning seats are far safer. (If you have only lap belts in the rear of your car, select a booster seat with an extra "energy absorber" belt.) Backless booster seats tend to provide a better fit than the high-back kind, and are more portable when you're switching them from car to car. One exception: If the rear seat of your vehicle has a low back, opt for a high-back booster seat, which provides more head and neck protection in a collision."

Here it's over 7 and our car seat laws are fucked up. So I'm guessing it'd be older than that for sure.

My friend also does that. She has her 2 and 3 year old in backless boosters using the car seatbelt. It looks so dangerous, I guess she thinks they look cute in it with their sunglasses and the wind blowing in their hair. They're so small too, about 28lbs, I don't know what she's thinking, but I didn't say anything to her about it, it's just not my place. :?

I'm not 100% sure. One of them the outside window looks like a bus stop, like they stopped at a redlight and snapped a pic. I was just like  bc both boys are around the same age as my 3.5 year old who is still in a carseat. The seat beats for both boys just had the lap belt on and not the shoulder belt.
It isn't my place to say anything, I was just in shock and then curious.

Honestly I wish there was more education on carseat safety that was mandatory for parents to learn. Or billboards talking about it....The only reason I know about rearfacing and all that is from BG....otherwise my kids might be sitting the same way.

Here the law is they have to be in a booster or carseat until 8 years or 80lbs but really safety wise kids aren't really ready to move from the booster to just the seat and seatbelt at 8 years old.

It's shocking more people don't brush up on car seat safety though. I mean have you ever seen those videos on youtube? One video is more than enough of a wake up call. I thought about saying something to my friend, but I've said something to another friend in the past and she blew up, went nutty, and blocked me on fb lol I mean honestly a 7 month old FF in a harnessed booster seat is just plain stupid, but again she thought it was cute because "he is already over 20lbs." But apparently, I was wrong, so I left it at that, because should something ever happen to her kid, that would be all on her and her husband, not me. :?

Yeah , I don't want to say anything because both moms are girls I knew a LONG time ago and we were never that close. I do however "like" or "share" carseat safety things periodically. I don't feel like getting into a heated argument so I stick to that lol.
