Constipation in 4 month old Abigail's Mommy 6/21 Due February 21; 1 child; 1 angel baby; Levittown, Pennsylvania 1431 posts

DD needs rice in her bottle for her reflux. However the amount of cereal I need to put in there so she's not spitting up her whole bottle (3tsp for an 8oz bottle, any less than that and she's spitting up all day long) constipates her pretty bad. She can go but it's usually thicker than peanut butter and she struggles while going.

Is there anything I can do to help her?

You can give her a couple ounces of prune juice. My DD had the same problem, I would have to give her 2oz of prune juice mid morning and then anotherid afternoon. That's what her pedi said to do until she was regular with softer poo.

Thank you! Would any juice work or just prune juice? (I ask only because I have whitebgrape juice and hubby has the car so I can't run to the store)

Ask the baby's doctor about brown Karo syrup. Santana is on soy (my 2 month old) and it makes him constipated ... his doctor told me to add a little bit of Karo to his bottles, it works for him.

Her Pedi was no help. She said "stop the cereal than" (keep in mind this is the dr that told me to put 5tsp in her 8oz bottle) so when I said that then she spits up all day she said "then keep adding the cereal"

Ooooooo ok! Well give the prune juice a try like the other person said, if that don't work try the Karo syrup (brown not clear). It's really the only thing that works for my son. Without it he's instantly constipated. Hope you find a solution soon.

Prune juice, Gerber apple juice, Gerber pear juice will all work. Gerber white grape will work too. Prune just works better.

Oh good. Because I have the Gerber white grape juice and can't get to the store for a few days because DH is working ridiculous hours. Probably a stupid question but do I have to dilute the Gerber juice with water?

I know the feeling with the crazy hours. My husband has been working 12 hr days 5 days a week. And the 2 days he takes off aren't even in a row. We're having a baby free date night tomorrow though, thank goodness! Haha! No you don't have to dilute Gerber juice. Its ready to go! Just do 2 oz at a time at first.

I would try apple or pear juice before prune juice. The prune could make her go too much.

I use the prune juice as a last resort because it really makes them go.

Okay, awesome thank you! What are these words you use, "baby free" and "date night" ? I've only been away from DD for 2 nights when I had my gallbladder out. Sounds like my husband's schedule. I think we've seen him maybe an hour a day. But the jobs he has are great so I can't complain too much. It lets me be a SAHM :)

You're welcome! My parents take our DD one of the nights he's off each week so we can have one interruption free day/night together. We're lucky that they do that for us. I definitely enjoy being a SAHM but man do I miss my hubby.

You're so lucky! my grandmother would gladly watch dd but she refuses to put cereal in her bottle because it will "make her fat" so either we'd have a major time limit or dd would spit up all night. And I love that I get to stay home with her and see all her firsts but definitely miss dh a lot.

eta: thank you for the tip about the juicw dd has been up since 5 I'd given her juice before and she just pooped and once she had a clean butt she passed out! (Which is great considering it's 1 in the morning)

I'm glad my parents enjoy keeping her. Not too long ago they kept her for a week while we went on vacation. They're a blessing for sure! I always send tons of pictures and videos to my husband so he doesn't miss so much. We had to put cereal in DD's bottle too. We ended up switching to Playtex drop ins and sensitive formula. You're welcome for the juice! It works wonders, if the constipation gets worse and her poop gets hard you can use pedialax glycerin suppositories. I have to do that with DD occaisionally.
