In my opinion, the best gift, are diapers, and wet wipes.

you can always use diapers, gift cards or items for when they are older. I found that I had everything I needed for a newborn but what helped a lot were the people who bought clothing, sippy cups and diapers for the older ages.

I just told people to get me things that they would want me to have.. People love to pick out baby clothes and cute crap. So let them just buy cute shit.

I agree. All of this! I didn't get any crib sheets at my shower, so I used a voucher that I got to buy them. And because I was hoping to breastfeed, I didn't receive/buy any bottles. We ended up buying them on the way home from the hospital after DD was born.

I liked the gifts for the baby for when it got older... like clothes, sippys, bath toys, and diapers in the bigger sizes like 3 and up...

the best gift I got, in my opinion, was a mommy bag. It had different kinds of relaxing bubble bath soaps, different lotions, facial masks, and a ticket book from my SO for back massages. I'm almost out of massage tickets lol :D
