Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease Mom2HMT Due January 1 (boy); 1 child; 4 angel babies; Iowa 751 posts

I babysit a 12 month old throughout the week.  Today he arrived with a rash on his cheeks and around his mouth.  Throughout the day I noticed that the rash seemed to be spreading and he also had a low grade fever, so I called his mom and she came to pick him up around an hour or so after I called, and took him to the doctor.  She called me afterward and let me know that he has hand, foot, and mouth disease.

I have a 9 year old and an almost 3 year old here, as well as another 12 month old that I watch.  What precautions do I need to take to be sure that this doesn't spread to them (or me and my husband!) as well...or is it too late?  I have wiped down our furniture and toys that cannot be soaked with Clorox wipes, is this enough? Also, is soaking other toys in soapy water enough to get rid of the germs? What other precautions should I be taking?

I have notified the other little girls parents letting them know what was going on and have bathed my children.  Is there anything else I can do? I feel horrible that this has happened.  It is especially frustrating because the boys mother knew he had a rash when she dropped him off.  She also brought him last week 2 days after he had the flu and said that he was symptom free when he still had diarrhea...my whole family as well as the other little girl and her family all got the flu within the next few days.  I'm kicking myself for not telling his mom that I shouldn't watch him today when she brought him this morning. :(

I think you should be safe you only had him about a hour and cleaned well! My oldest son had it when he was a baby because of my mother's house and it didn't spread to my sister's kids or anybo

I think you should be ok. It sounds like you have sanitized everything he came in contact with, and that's really the most you can do.

Unfortunately, I had him for about 8 hours today and 9 yesterday.  Hopefully it doesn't spread!

DDs daycare owner said it's normally contagious before the outbreak of sores/blisters

DD got sent home with a 101.4 temp yesterday that's when we found It out, she was at the dr the day before & they said it was just a virus. She got the blisters over night I guess. You should be ok!
