My neighbor told me to take Benadryl to see if it puts the baby to sleep. If it doesn't, she said it means I'm in labor. But I'm not having any contractions. What exactly does Benadryl do and why do women take it when they're in labor?

it makes you sleepy and its an antihistamine used for colds or alergies. and i dont know why she would say that, sounds dumb to me. its safe to take while you are pregnant, but has nothing to do with if you are in labor or not

I've never heard of this, but if it was just a neighbor, and not a dr recommending it, I wouldn't take it. Better safe than sorry. Plus, the baby will tell you when it's showtime. If you're not having contractions, then you're not in labor. You dont' need to drug up your baby to tell you that.

That's what I thought... It just really confused me. I've heard of doing it a couple times from some other people. But I never understood.

It will still make you sleepy. I had benedryl in my IV while I was in labor with my son because of an allergic reaction to something else they gave me and it still made me tired with my contractions 3 minutes apart.
