I'm curious what everyone's feelings are about young children getting flu shots. I'm personally in between on the issue.

The Cons: (In My Opinion)
It doesnt prevent every strain of the flu.
It contains mercury, or at least it does to my knowledge.
The only time I ever got a flu shot, I got the flu........

The Pros:
It might prevent her from getting the flu.

My biggest concern is that she will be like me and the flu shot will make her get sick. And I just don't know if it is necessary to get the flu shot if she just stays home with me. And I know she could get it just going to Walmart or something.

I just want to know everyone's opinions on the issue, and whether or not your kids will get the flu shot.

No Drama Please! Mature discussions are welcomed!

You know i'm really undecided on this. He has had all of his required/suggested shots to this point, but we've been here a 1 1/2 years and he's been sick once, and it was just allergies.

I think that as long as we are here, he wont be getting the flu shot.. afterall he isn't in daycare, so he's not overly exposed to sickness. I think if we were in a different location, or if he were in daycare or school, then he would get it.

My son is only two months old so he is to young to get the shot, however if he were old enough I wouldn't let him get it because...

First off, its a natural thing to catch just like a cold and it doesn't protect against every single flu strain and it will only lower his immune system instead of letting him fight it off naturally

Second, I too don't like the crap they put in the shot for example:
Ingredients and associated risk list for the Fluzone vaccine:

Chick Embryo - this can be problematic for those allergic to eggs or egg products

Formaldehyde - (Embalming Fluid) Formaldehyde has been classified as a human carcinogen (cancer-causing substance) by the International Agency for Research on Cancer and as a probable human carcinogen by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency). Research studies of workers exposed to formaldehyde have suggested an association between formaldehyde exposure and cancers of the nasal sinuses, nasopharynx, and brain, and possibly leukemia

Octoxinol-9 - This is a spermicide (kills sperm) Chills; confusion; dizziness; fever; lightheadedness; muscle aches; sunburn-like skin rash that is followed by peeling of the skin

Triton X-100 - Harmful if swallowed. Causes severe eye irritation. May be harmful if inhaled or in contact with skin. Toxicology not fully investigated. The product may contain traces of ethylene oxide or dioxane, which are probable human carcinogens.

Gelatin- Made from the boiled bones, skins and tendons of animals.
Thimerisol (mercury derivative) - Several cases of acute mercury poisoning from thimerosal-containing products were found in the medical literature with total doses of thimerosal ranging from approximately 3 mg/kg (Your vaccine contains 25 ug per 5mL dose) to several hundred mg/kg These studies reported local necrosis, acute hemolysis, disseminated intravascular coagulation, acute renal tubular necrosis, and central nervous system injury including obtundation, coma, and death

Sodium Phosphate - Phosphates are slowly and incompletely absorbed when ingested, and seldom result in systemic effects. Such effects, however, have occurred Symptoms may include vomiting, lethargy, diarrhea, blood chemistry effects, heart disturbances and central nervous system effects. The toxicity of phosphates is because of their ability to sequester calcium. Irritant due to its acidic nature. May cause inflammation and pain on prolonged contact, especially with moist skin. May sequester calcium and cause calcium phosphate deposits in the kidneys.

Sodium Chloride(Salt) - Very large doses can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and prostration. Dehydration and congestion occur in most internal organs. Hypertonic salt solutions can produce violent inflammatory reactions in the gastrointestinal tract. May irritate damaged skin; absorption can occur with effects similar to those via ingestion.

I'd really like to know how the mercury and formaldehyde help. Anywho, so those are my reasons for not getting the shot.

My boys will not be getting the flu vax, mainly for the reasons you girls already listed. I'm not too thrilled with most vaccines, so this one I find especially unnecessary.
Like you guys have already said.. it doesn't protect against all strains... and I believe last year, they had a bad "batch". I think I'm wording that wrong... but I mean that lots of people still got the flu, because they weren't protected against the actual strain that was going around... which means that tons of people and babies were injected with unnecessary crap.
I'll take my chances with the flu, and deal with that, should any of us get it.

I opted out of it.

I think in cases like the flu vaccine, it's actually doing an injustice to our kid's immune systems. They NEED to be able to fight off these viruses naturally & build an immunity against them.

Plus, I've gotten the flu shot twice in my life & ended up sicker than a dog both times & caught it more than once. Really defeats the purpose, doesn't it? Now, if I let my body fight off the virus on it's own the first go around, I go through the whole flu season without catching it again.

I'm kinda hippieish when it comes to vaccines & medication in general. He gets the necessary ones & no more. I don't put anything in his body that isn't natural (medication wise) unless there's no other choice.
