Vaccines, Sodium Benzoate and Mito Dysfunction EmmaGrace 3 kids; Ennis, Texas 27010 posts

This is something I only recently considered in the whole vaccine-autism topic.

I would love to hear the opinions of anyone who has any knowledge of science/medicine...Tina, Mara, and C come to mind...along with my fav nurse Arrogant Mc C. Remember that I'm not claiming to be a scientist, doctor, nurse or anyone else with scientific or medical experience. I probably will not personally be able to debate/discuss (very effectively) the specifics of what some of you may offer, but I would love nonetheless to hear different views and see the discussion among those who do know more about this stuff and perhaps have a better grasp on the science end of it all.

(This may further the belief that all I do is sit around and think about the evils of vaccines...lol. So be it.)

Please bear with me here. This is a little involved.

Ok...first up...

Mito Disfunction and Vaccines-Autism

So many of you may remember that a few months ago the US government conceded (admitted) that vaccines caused one little girl to develop symptoms of autism (keep in mind, autism is merely a set of symptoms.) http://www.huffingtonpost.com/david-kirby/government-concedes-vacci_b_88323.html One of the concerns brought up in this case is that the girl had a rare mitochondrial disorder which may have predisposed her to vaccine injury. Here's a quote from David Kirby's article on this:

"Mitochondria, you may recall from biology class, are the little powerhouses within cells that convert food into electrical energy, partly through a complex process called "oxidative phosphorylation." If this process is impaired, mitochondrial disorder will ensue.
The child in this case had several markers for Mt disease, which was confirmed by muscle biopsy. Mt disease is often marked by lethargy, poor muscle tone, poor food digestion and bowel problems, something found in many children diagnosed with autism."

Sodium Benzoate

Now, fast forward to last night. I'm a bit of a freakazoid label reader when it comes to my food, and I was googling a preservative I noticed in my coffee flavoring...sodium benzoate.

Here's what I found on Wikipedia:

"Sodium benzoate is a preservative. It is bacteriostatic and fungistatic under acidic conditions. It is used most prevalently in acidic foods such as salad dressings (vinegar), carbonated drinks (carbonic acid), jams and fruit juices (citric acid), pickles (vinegar), and condiments. It is also found in alcohol-based mouthwash and silver polish. It can also be found in cough syrups like Robitussin.[1] Sodium benzoate is declared on a product label as 'sodium benzoate' or E211. For those who can taste the chemical, it tends to be perceived as sweet, sour, salty, or sometimes bitter..."

"...In combination with ascorbic acid (vitamin C, E300), sodium benzoate and potassium benzoate may form benzene[7], a known carcinogen. Heat, light and shelf life can affect the rate at which benzene is formed.
Professor Peter Piper of the University of Sheffield claims that sodium benzoate by itself can damage and inactivate vital parts of DNA in a cell's mitochondria. Mitochondria consume oxygen to generate ATP, the body's energy currency. If they are damaged due to disease, the cell malfunctions and may enter apoptosis. There are many illnesses now tied to DNA damage, including Parkinson's and other neurodegenerative diseases, but above all, the aging process in general.[8][9][10][11][12]

[edit] Hyperactivity

Research published in 2007 for the UK's Food Standards Agency suggests that sodium benzoate (E211) is linked to hyperactive behaviour and decreased intelligence in children. According to the report, a high consumption of sodium benzoate is associated with a reduction in IQ of close to 5.5 points. [13] On 6 September 2007, the British Food Standards Agency issued revised advice on certain artificial food additives, including sodium benzoate (E211)[14][15][16]..."

So this concerned me, especially its links to decreased intellegence in children! But did you catch this part? "sodium benzoate by itself can damage and inactivate vital parts of DNA in a cell's mitochondria."

So then I started searching for products which contain sodium benzoate, because with these possible health concerns, I'd rather not let my children have it.

Anyway, guess what sodium benzoate is in?

ingredients: cellulose, citric acid, corn syrup, FD&C Red #40, flavors, glycerin, purified water, sodium benzoate, sorbitol, xanthan gum

Carboxymethylcellulose sodium, citric acid, D&C red 22, D&C red 28, flavors, maltitol, microcrystalline cellulose, purified water, sodium benzoate, sodium citrate, xanthan gum.

Is it possible that we're interfering with children's mitochondrial function by giving these infant medicines which contain sodium benzoate along with so many vaccines...and inadvertently predisposing them to vaccine induced autism or other neurological impairments?

Also, is anyone else shocked to hear that this questionable ingredient is included in infant medicines and does this make you feel less inclined to give it to your children?

And to think I was about to buy some of that infant mylicon because my doctor said it "might" help with my sons spit up issue....its amazing how these so called doctors fail to inform their patients that these vaccines/baby medicines have harmful ingredients.

Bravo again Kellie as usual.
