We had our 20 week scan on Thursday, and our baby boy looked GREAT! As I'm wiping off the gel, I asked is everything good/normal?
Then u hear that gut-wrenching "There's just one thing......"
My heart SANK!
We had recorded the entire session, but I had split it into 3 parts for uploading purposes, this is just the last part that covers the EIF.
We were told our son has EIF. Could anyone else please tell me they have been through this, those who are still pregnant, or have had their baby? What exactly does this mean? I THINK I have a general good grasp on it from talking to my midwife and sonotech but it's not like they have been through it their self. So looking for some support please.
Echogenic intracardiac focus (EIF) is a small bright spot seen in the babys heart on an ultrasound exam. This is thought to represent mineralization, or small deposits of calcium, in the muscle of the heart. EIFs are found in about 3-5% of normal pregnancies and cause no health problems.
EIFs themselves have no impact on health or heart function. Often the EIF is gone by the third trimester. If there are no problems or chromosome abnormalities, EIFs are considered normal changes, or variants.
From what I understand there are 15 soft markers for DS. We were checked for all. Everything was normal, the nuchal folds were under 5 mm (dunno what they were exactly though?) Just was told it was normal. I actually had to call the midwife and the sonotech back today to make sure just b/c she never mentioned it during the video and I couldn't remember.
We'll have a follow up ultrasound w/ our midwife once we reach the 3rd trimester to see if it has disappeared or not.
It might just be a shadow like she said. Did you see the specialist?
It is hard not to worry when it involves your child. But just wait till you get your follow up exam. Also , don't hesitate to push for answers or get a second opinion from an OB or regular baby doctor to get all questions answered.
I learned the hard way. I am sending prayers from Wisconsin that every turns out just fine.
not sure about the EIF, but i believe the folds you were referring to are the folds of fat on the back of babys neck.
i had the same thing...everything else they look for was good except they saw that in mine too. my dr. told me usually that alone doesnt mean anything but i know...its still hard to clear that out of ur mind. i have found it reassuring tho that alot of ppl have said when that was the only thing noticed on their ultrasounds their babies were completely normal...hope that kinda helps ease ur mind....o did u get the quad screening done also?
good looking baby. i have no eif experience, sorry. but i wish you luck

We'll our son was born May 17, 2009. He is now 14 months old and I thought it might be time for an update. All is well, no signs of the EIF since the day he was born!!!
