Lipoma of the brain? *Mrs. Starks* 3 kids; Michigan 2317 posts17th Apr '09
My almost 5 year old son has a small fatty tumor in the back of his head, which would explain his headaches in the back of his head. When I heard the word tumor, I thought my heart was going to fall to the floor...I couldn't breathe. It was not what I was expecting to hear. I was expecting to hear that everything was fine. However, she said that what it is is fat tissue...but they call it a tumor. She also said that it is benign...which means it is not cancerous. It won't spread and is not life-threatening. It's called a Lipoma I guess. They can get bigger though, and if they do they can interfere with other parts of the brain and will have to be removed. They can also stay the same. His neurosurgeon said the lipoma is very small...smaller than a pea...and because it's so small they don't even really like to call it a tumor. He said how he isn't concerned about it at all and we shouldn't be either and how often at times they never get any bigger. However, we do have to come back in 3-6 months for another MRI just to check on it and make sure it hasn't grown...if it has then it will probably need to be removed. But for right now, we aren't to worry about it because it's pretty close to being nothing. I can say one thing, we sure do feel like a weight has been lifted off our chests! We feel so relieved that it isn't something worse. I seen kids in there that made me so sad and made me so greatful to have Jacob just the way he is. I've been having a hard time enjoying my pregnancy because I've been worried about Jacob. I've often at times felt guilty for being excited about the baby knowing there may be something wrong with Jacob. Now I feel like I can enjoy the rest of my pregnancy...and breathe a sigh of relief. I just wanted to know if any other moms have had to deal with this and what was the outcome? Has your child been able to live a normal and healthy and happy life? What are your stories?

I haven't had to deal with anything like that. I just wanted to say I hope everything turns out alright. I couldn't even imagine having to go through that whether the doctor is concerned or not.
