Thickening Formula help! FINN'S MOMMA 1 child; El Paso, Texas 7961 posts

My son has reflux. My pedi suggested thickening his formula with rice cereal. He also put him on zantac to help. I was so upset about it all I didn't bother to ask him how to thicken his formula other than to use one tablespoon per 2 oz.

Can I mix up 30 ounces in advance and thicken it or do I need to add it with each bottle. Also can I use his normal bottles? Will it still come out the n****e?

Thanks for the help :D Oh and no b.s. I'm not in the mood for critiscm :!:

My son is on Zantac. gets rice cereal in bottles. I use playtex nipples because they have a cereal n****e. He gets 3tbs per 4oz.

I would say go ahead and mix the formula, but don't add the cereal until you pour it into the bottle for each feeding.

I wouldnt thicken it in advance, ive had it basically unthicken if that makes sense i dont know how to word it, from leaving a formula/cereal bottle out for awhile. I would just put 1 or 2 tsp in my sons 5ounce bottle. I had to use oatmeal single grain cereal though, because the rice cereal gave him extreme constipation, so watch out for that one! GOod luck! Helped my son! You might want to use a fast flow or medium flow n****e, depending on how old your son is. I did this 7weeks and up and I used playtex ventair fast flow, its y cut and he did ok with it, didnt choke or anything.

Rice cereal thins out after awhile, so it would probably be smarter to add it to each bottle instead of premixing. Also you will probably need a Y cut n****e or you can just make the hole bigger on the nipples you already have. Hope it helps with his reflux. My son is having similar problems, but he is allergic to rice cereal.

If you use Dr. Browns they have a n****e that is called the "Y" n****e, that is made for cereal in the bottle due to reflux.

Have you tried using Enfamil AR? It has added rice starch to thicken it and has worked wonders for my son (along with Prevacid).

I would ask your pedi #1 about Enfamil A.R, its a pre mixed formula that has rice starch in it.

#2 my son and from the general censious most babies dont do well on zantac it made my son's reflux way worse he was de-stating left and right some mommas on here told me about prevacid and that works much better.

As for the cereal the point is to weight the formula down in there stomachs so they don't reflux as much if your pedi didnt give you an amount I would just go by what the box says. for now if you notice its to thin and stikk causing him trouble add a little extra.

hope that helps and gl momma reflux is never fun
