Tori Spelling is the kind of person who people will pay attention to, no matter what she does. As a matter of fact, she’s done one heck of a job reinventing herself every couple of years. Everyone remembers her best as the blonde beauty from Beverly Hills that every girl wanted as her best friend. Then, she became a Lifetime movie icon. She also had cable sitcoms that were loosely based on her crazy Hollywood life. Before long, she married Dean McDermott, started a family and became the DIY and fix it queen with her multiple reality television shows.
But it’s the raw and unedited version of Tori Spelling that everyone seems to relate to the most. She doesn’t pretend to be perfect. As a matter of fact, Tori has been quite open about her financial issues, her marriage with Dean McDermott, and how she often feels tired with all the day to day challenges that come with motherhood. And then there are her critics. There’s always someone on social media who thinks they have a right to tell Tori what she’s doing right or wrong with her family. With that said, here are 10 times Tori had to defend her parenting and ten times she didn’t pay attention to her critics!
Let's start with the 10 times she had to defend her parenting choices...
Believe it or not, Tori Spelling’s critics have actually blasted her for shopping at Target for kids. Yes, we are talking about the same retail department store that millions of moms frequent on a weekly basis. But because Tori comes from Hollywood royalty, many of her fans and followers expect to see her children in the priciest couture clothes that money can buy. Even Tori’s husband Dean McDermott was so shocked at all of the negative Target feedback that he felt obliged to go on the record to defend shopping at the store. After all, kids are kids: they don’t care what they are wearing!
Tori has also gotten plenty of criticism for allowing her children to experiment with different hair colors. Some people have left her social media comments stating that she is possibly ruining her children’s hair by allowing them to put processed chemicals and hair dye in their fine hair. But Tori has never allowed it to bother her. She’s also maintained that the products that she uses at home are either organic or natural and that most of the hair color washes out anyway. In other words, she’s not the kind of mother who would allow her children to permanently damage their hair.
During a recent red carpet appearance, both Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott got an earful from their critics because of the way their children looked. Apparently, their hair was a mess, they looked less than perfectly groomed and wore clothes that had plenty of wrinkles in them. But according to Tori and Dean, the kids just got back from a long day at school and they didn’t have the time to change them. Dean couldn’t believe that people had the nerve to make comments about the way their children looked. He reminded all of the couple’s critics that their kids are simply off limits – as it should be.
It’s no secret that Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott have had their fair share of financial issues – and then some. But that hasn’t stopped her from working or going on pricey vacations for that matter. Tori said it like this: “I'm definitely a driven person—I get it from my dad. Motherhood takes it to a whole different level, though: I want things because I want my children to have them. I want them to work and work hard, but I also want to provide for them as much as I can, and to be able to show them great things and take them great places.”
Even though Tori and Dean often have a hard time making ends meet, a lot of people can’t understand why they would have five children, along with one step son to take care of knowing that it would be hard on them. And we are not just talking about finances, but the physical aspect of having so many children, too. One source told Us Weekly, “She never gave herself a break. Now she’s balancing everything with the help of some extra childcare. Having full-time help is expensive, but taking care of five children on your own is close to impossible.”
It’s no secret that Tori Spelling used to live a very lavish lifestyle with her parents, and that might be one of the reasons why she has some pretty big spending habits until this day. But Tori maintains that it’s all just smoke and mirrors. Tori said, “It's funny, the perception people have of people who are in Hollywood. I don't have any friends in Tinseltown, so I don't know what it's like with other families. As for ours, of course I have people who help us out, but the chores we do on our own are the things that kind of ground us.”
Tori has often gotten criticism for putting her children in front of the cameras, and especially on reality television. After all, they are too young to decide whether or not they want to be in the limelight. But for Tori, she’s not bothered by what other people have to say. She knows that her family life is part of her celebrity package. People want to see her as not only an actress, but a wife and a mother who tries to juggle it all in front of the cameras with her kids, no less. Plus, the Hollywood life is the only kind of life she’s ever known.
Now, this might seem very controversial for some, but not a big deal for others. Tori Spelling has gotten plenty of flack for allowing her daughters to wear makeup in public and on the red carpet. But then again, what little girl hasn’t experimented with her mother’s makeup in the past? Everyone wants to look just like their mommy, especially if they see them as their role model. Tori Spelling, as you can imagine, is no different with her girls. She lets her girls wear red lipstick and isn’t bothered by what people have to say about it. Plus, it comes right off!
During one particular episode of her last reality television show, Tori Spelling complained about having to make her children’s private school tuition. A lot of people pointed out that she didn’t have to send her kids to such a school. But for Tori, it’s her family choice. Even though she works hard, she finds herself struggling to make things come together. Tori said, “There are days when I struggle with wanting to be a full-time, stay-at-home mom, and feeling guilty about that because I work. There's this one mom at school who'll be like, ‘Oh, we're having this playdate or whatever, can you come?’ Recently, when I said I couldn't, she said, ‘Oh, you never go to anything.’ That hit me really hard.”
Tori Spelling has had three rather dramatic and yes, complicated pregnancies. She was on bed rest for two months and no, it didn’t feel like a spa vacation at all! She was forced to take it very easy with her fourth child, Finn, and it wasn’t easy to say the least. Tori also dealt with a lot of emotional stress during her pregnancies. She told E! News, "I was flat on my back. I wasn't allowed to even get up to walk in the halls. My bathroom privileges would be taken away. I wasn't allowed to shower. Everything was stripped from you."
And here are 10 times she paid no mind to her critics...
Believe it or not, there are some people who think that Tori might sometimes act like she is too close with her stepson, Jack. But according to the television actress, the foundation of their relationship is based on both mutual love and respect. She also makes sure to not overstep her boundaries as a stepmother to the teen. Tori explains, “The most important thing I learned was to make sure Jack knew I was never going to try to take his mom's place or be his mother. I definitely wanted to be a role model and a parent, though, and to set boundaries. It really does take a village.”
If there is one place that Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott love to frequent with their family, it’s Benihana. Yes, Tori really is a regular mom just like the rest of us: she shops at Target and she dines at chain restaurants just like the rest of us. Strangely enough, Tori had a pretty bad trip and fall during one visit back in 2014. “Tori hadn’t even started to eat, when she slipped and fell,” a source previously told People in April 2015. “Not thinking, she grabbed onto the side of the ... grill and [it got] her arm. At the time, it didn’t seem as bad as the doctors told her it was the next day.” Tori has never made a comment about it.
Everyone has dealt with pretty desperate moments in their lives and Tori Spelling is no different. She’s gotten lots of criticism for borrowing mother from her mother Candy in order to help pay the bills at home and keep the lights on. But Tori doesn’t care what people have to say. She does what she has to do. Plus, she has the utmost respect for her mom. Tori confessed, “I look back and remember all the things she and my dad had to go through as parents. You just don't value the challenges of dealing with kids on a daily basis until you have small children yourself!”
With the above being said, Tori has also gotten a lot of flack for having very lavish baby showers. Some people think that she shouldn’t be having such luxurious showers and gifts for each baby she has, especially since she and Dean have such a hard time keeping up with their lifestyle once the baby is born. But Tori Spelling has never made a comment about it. Plus, more often than not, it’s her mother Candy Spelling and her friends who help put on and organize the shower for her. For Tori, she appreciates all of the love she gets during each one of her celebrations.
Yes, Tori has even gotten criticism for her kids’ back to school photos! Some people out there said that her children look disheveled, but Tori doesn’t care what they think. She told E! Online, “I’m not going to stop putting my kids out there. I’m proud of my kids. I’m just like any mother out there. It was their first day of school and I was taking a picture and I was proud. I think it’s beyond disappointing. In a world where we talk about evolving yet we spend so much of our time shaming others. I think the most disappointing thing was seeing other moms shaming another mom.”
Can a picture really tell a story worth a thousand words? Some people believe that the answer is yes. A lot of people think that Tori’s kids look unhappy in her social media photos but the celebrity mom insists that’s not the case. As a mother, she and Dean do their best to make sure that her children grow up to be well rounded. Tori puts it this way, “When I had downtime, I didn't want to say no to them and have them be upset, so I'd give them everything they wanted. Dean's the rock and the disciplinarian—we had to find that balance together. He helped me to set rules and guidelines.”
Yes, even though Tori Spelling already has her hands full with five children (and several pets at home), she is thinking about adding a sixth child to her family! But keep in mind that it’s just an idea, and not an actual plan! Tori says that she’s open to the possibility for the future. She told Us Weekly, “You know, I do, I like even numbers, they keep asking, they all want one more because they want a little baby sister now. But I can’t imagine dad being sane if we have one more. It would push dad over the edge. He’s doing the best he can!”
Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott are just like so many couples out there: they have their good moments and they have their bad moments. Their marriage isn’t perfect, and they don’t pretend it is, either. In fact, Tori says that she tries to schedule date nights with Dean, but it’s not always easy for them. Tori confessed, “It's something that we're working on. A father's instinct is for alone time. A mother's instinct is to just take care of the kids. We really try to make date nights, even if it's just watching a movie after the kids go to bed.”
Tori Spelling has had a lot of roles in her life, but she maintains that the most important role for her has been that as a mother. And just like so many other moms out there, she worries about her children’s future. Tori doesn’t always know if she’s doing a good enough job for them. She told Parenting, “I'm scared of [messing] up my kids. You want your kids to be the best kids they can be, and you try to give them all the support, love, education, and information they need, so they're prepared when they go out into the world.”
Believe it or not, Tori Spelling has even received criticism for her daughter Stella’s slime business. Yes, there are critics out there who have slammed the celebrity mother by supposedly teaching her children how to deceive their customers. Of course, there is no truth behind these claims. Back in 2018, the 10-year-old entrepreneur started ‘Stylish Slime By Stella.’ Some people have made claims that the little girl is profiting off of her mother’s fans by charging for the slime but not sending the product to her customers. As of press time, Tori has never made any comments about it. All Tori and her husband Dean have said was that little Stella is hoping to use her profits to save for her college tuition one day.
