We all grew up with friends who had crazy mothers; the types who would record their daughter's conversations and chaperone at proms just to make sure no funny business was happening, but the truth is, we laugh about those moments as adults.
There's a much more twisted reality that seems to be more rapid in high-profile families where there is more pressure to perform. When a child becomes a golden ticket, their parents are truly tested. What would you (as a mom) do if your daughter fell into fame? Would you do whatever it takes to ensure your daughter's success...even if the means to the end weren't very healthy?
The moms mentioned either exploited or exploit their children themselves. No matter which side of the coin they land on, the issue is the same: some truly hurt themselves and those they love, all for fame.
Of all the jacked-up celebs in Hollywood, these 15 moms have been called out by the media, and the reason is that they have had plenty of opportunities to redeem themselves but they haven't in the public's eye. It's never too late though. Right?
13 Dina Lohan
Back in 2012, Lindsay called the cops on her mother Dina Lohan after the two got into an argument that ended in Dina holding Lindsay captive. Not only was Lindsay her mother's hostage, but Dina purposely hurt Lindsay's leg.
It's never been a secret that Lindsay and her mother partied together, but it wasn't until Lindsay went off the deep end that we found out about Dina.
In 2015, Lindsay's mother sold her belongings without her knowing.
She pocketed money by stealing and selling Lindsay's furniture, clothing, and artwork. She's also always competed with Lindsay for fame, but she never went as low as the time she invited Entertainment Tonight to accompany her while visiting Lindsay in rehab.
Last year, Lindsay took to Instagram to vent about how her mother hasn't ever been around for her. "It just really sucks when your mom can't be there for you."
12 Linda Hogan
Brooke Hogan has had a lot to say about mom, Linda Hogan, over the past few years. It all started back in 2009 when her mother went off the deep end and, according to Brooke, started using illegal substances with her 20-year-old boyfriend.
Brooke claims that her mother deeply hurt her when she called her a liar and didn't allow her to come around to her younger man. Of course, it is obvious to Brooke that Mrs. Hogan was being used and was threatened by her own daughter, but she will never admit it.
Side news: Hulk Hogan might be after a seat in the Senate and Brooke seems to totally be backing him. She's pro-dad at all times, but mom...? Forgotten.
11 Tish Cyrus
Tish Cyrus has been publicly defending her parenting style since 2015 when a series of photos of her partying with her daughter, Miley Cyrus, were released. It took years for Tish to accept Miley's sexuality, but once she did, Miley and her became the best of friends.
"She believes in me more than she believes in any god. I just asked for her to accept me. And she has," Miley told Paper Magazine. Miley and her mom were unnaturally close until Liam Hemsworth, Miley's on and off again boyfriend of eight years, challenged her.
Last year, Liam and Tish were filmed yelling at each other at a club called Soho Beach in Malibu.
The fight got so bad that Miley told her mother she was done with her and sped off with her man. Tish was heard yelling, "You have no authority in this family. You can’t take my daughter away from me!" But that's exactly what happened.
Looks like the two aren't so close anymore, but Miley and Liam sure are.
10 Nicole Kidman
Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman adopted two children early in their marriage: Connor and Isabella. When the star couple divorced, Connor and Isabella decided to cut Nicole out of their lives after their mentors at the church of Scientology called Nicole a "suppressive person" who Connor and Isabella needed to stay away from.
Whether or not Nicole deserves the shunning isn't clear. Nicole's career did keep her away from the children most of the time.
When Isabella got married in 2016, Nicole wasn't invited, but they did reunite in London a year later pretty positively.
Nicole said it was a "very emotional moment," but after that trip was over, she went back to keeping her distance. She's never fought for custody or visitation rights. She always wanted to respect her kids' choice.
Side note: Nicole married country star Keith Urban in 2006 and has had two daughters with him via surrogacy, whom she's much closer to than her adopted son and daughter.
9 Courtney Love
Frances Bean Cobain's father took his life early on in her life and her mother Courtney Love has struggled with substance abuse and got in trouble with the law for most of France's life.
Because of those things, Courtney lost custody of Frances in 2009.
Since then, Frances has filed more than one restraining order against her mother for their family pets and for not taking care of their home. Side note: Courtney would drag Frances out of bed at night to go to random men's houses to yell at them for being "good for nothin'."
“She rarely eats … She often falls asleep in her bed while she is smoking, and I am constantly worried that she will start a fire (which she has done at least three times) that will threaten lives," Frances told The Fix.
Of course, Frances no longer needs a guardian to care for her. She's now 25 years old and is staying far away from her mother.
8 Brooke Mueller
In December of 2016, Kate Mueller, ex-wife to Charlie Sheen, checked herself into rehab after being hospitalized for alcohol and substance abuse while caring for her twin sons. She successfully graduated from the program and is in an outpatient program now where she has people who keep her accountable as she learns how to be a mom to her sons again.
"The boys love being with Brooke because she can go skiing with them on weekends and she takes them everywhere with her. Grandma was too strict with them," Moira Fiore (Brooke's mom) told ET.
But we already know that Brooke takes her boys everywhere she goes. Who can remember the time the Salt Lake City Police arrested her in front of her sons after she was caught barefoot with them in a bar refusing to let their nanny take them home...?
Though they felt abandoned for a long time, Kate and Charlie's sons Bob and Max now believe they have their mother back for good. Let's all hope.
7 Jaid Barrymore
Drew's mother, Jaid Barrymore, had the sole responsibility of taking care of Drew after her father John Drew Barrymore passed away. Her mother was a free-spirited party girl with no parenting gauge whatsoever. When Drew was only eight, she was going out to clubs and bars with her mother and her mother's friends five nights out of the week. By age 11, she considered herself an alcoholic, and by age 12, she was addicted to illegal substances. By 13, Drew's mother had her institutionalized.
Drew was locked up in an institution for the mentally ill. A year and a half in, she was released with the doctor's order to be emancipated from her mother.
So by age 14, she was completely on her own.
She worked at restaurants to pay for a tiny room she rented in a neighborhood, barely surviving. After eight years of barely making it, Drew magically broke into acting again.
Thankfully, she was able to move back into her dream. As for her mother, this is what Drew has to say, "I really didn’t know how to feel about my mom for so many years. And it’s painful to have conflicting feelings about the woman who gave birth to you. But it’s like I’ve finally passed through something which has made me OK with everything, even if I don’t understand it all and might never, never resolve it.”
6 Ariel Winter's Mother
It all started when Ariel Winter landed her first major role on ABC's Modern Family. Her castmates started to notice how hungry she was, so they'd order her food without telling her and leave it out for her to consume.
Ariel confessed that her mother started forcing her to dress "maturely" by age seven. By age 12 when she started on Modern Family, Ariel's mother was barely allowing her to eat and forbidding her from getting her education. She'd keep Ariel out at parties all night, not bringing her home until just a couple hours before she'd have to be on set.
Cast members of Modern Family decided to call Child Protective Services and Ariel was put under the care of her older sister.
She was legally emancipated from her mother by age 17 and hasn't spoken to her in five years.
"It has been very sad for me, but at the same time it's been much better for me emotionally and physically to be on my own and have a better, safer household and support system," Ariel recently said on The Ellen Show.
5 Nancy Dow
Jennifer Aniston's mother Nancy Dow passed away last year, but there were no tears shed on Jennifer's part.
“Everyone knows that she and Nancy had a horrible relationship. She was an absentee daughter and now, even with Nancy gone, it seems that she still doesn’t want her mom around," said a family friend in an interview with InTouch.
The cold feelings were mutual it seems, as Nancy left Jennifer out of her will. She left nothing to her daughter. Jennifer has shared in past interviews of how her mother was extremely critical of her while she was growing up.
"I don't know if I would have known how beautiful she was if she wasn't always pointing out how unbeautiful I was," said Jen.
This might be the reason that Jennifer has never had any cosmetic surgeries...
4 Kris Jenner
Did you know that it was Kris Jenner who leaked the adult tape of her daughter Kim Kardashian? She claims she did it because she knew it'd make Kim one of the biggest stars in the world, and she was right. Kris then built an empire (a "brand") on the back of Kim, and still manages her to this day, as well as managing her other daughters.
When Kylie and Kendall started modeling back in 2012, Kris required they pay her a 10% commission rate, but to Kris' credit, she was the one who got them on to America's Next Top Model when no one even knew who they were.
Kris doesn't wear the mom hat well, but she rocks at being a manager. She's totally succeeded in keeping her girls in the spotlight.
3 Kate Moss
Kate Moss is the mother to Lila-Grace who is now 15-years-old, but who can still remember her mother being absent for her most important moments growing up.
Kate has been known to miss birthdays and important school functions because of her struggle to maintain sober. It all started back in 2005 around Lila's third birthday, when Kate was arrested for using illegal substances at a party. She spent her daughter's birthday in rehab and has repeated that cycle a few times since.
Lila has only been spotted out with her mother a few times, and the photos snapped by the paparazzi suggest that Kate still can't stop at one drink.
Soon after the above photo was leaked to the press, Lila was asked if her mother was her idol and this was her response: "No, like every mum she’s embarrassing and annoying." (I feel that!)
2 Kate Gosselin
A few months back, after an exchange between Kate and Jon got so heated that police had to get involved.
Jon Gosselin's mother (Kate's ex-mother-in-law) pursued multiple interviews so she could tell the world of how mentally unstable Kate Gosselin is and how she needs to be subjected to psychological evaluations.
"Hannah told me that Kate made her and her brothers and sisters all chant, 'We will not visit Jon,'" Kate's mother-in-law explained. "Not even 'We will not visit Daddy.' She makes them say 'Jon.'" There was no real parenting arrangement between the two, but Jon has involved a judge to define the terms since he claims that Kate acts like a child over her own children.
Kate (who often accepts television appearances) can't afford to have Jon slip out of the picture, because then who would watch the children?
1 Nadya Suleman Aka "Octo-Mom"
We all remember when Nadya Suleman became famous. National news outlets gave her the name "Octo-Mom" after she gave birth to octuplets in January of 2009. The public wasn't rejoicing though, as it was discovered that she had six other young children already and was unemployed, surviving on government programs.
A few months after giving birth to her octuplets, Nadya was approached by a production company in the UK to star in a show that would document her crazy life. She was promised $250 a day per child but the show was put on hold when a case with Orange County Superior Court surfaced stating that Nadya needed to appoint a legal guardian to help care for her 14 children.
She went on to file for personal bankruptcy in 2012 when it was made known she had $1 million in debts and that her home was at risk for being auctioned. She started paying off her debts by exotic dancing and staring in adult films (she's had no other jobs).
Two years later, Nadya was accused of welfare fraud for not reporting her earnings, but her attorney argued that with the help of friends, her fine for fraud had already been paid and a second chance was granted.
In 2015, it all turned around though after Nadya caught her daughter trying on her hooker heels. She quit "that life" and started a cleaning business. Sure, being there for her kids is a challenge, but they all seem to be getting by now.
