Well the time has come. The nursery is finished. The baby shower has been had. The bun has been roasting in the oven for 40 weeks and still there’s no signs of this baby coming anytime soon. Mom's body grows larger, her stretch marks multiply and she says, “Enough is enough.” She wants to give her baby the extra motivation it needs to crawl out of it’s safe cocoon of warmth and solace and into her loving arms.
We are a new generation and the old wives’ tales of the past just do not cut it anymore. Sure there is some validity to honoring the traditions passed on from generation to generation but there are new techniques that are being shared and passed on from mothers from our generation.
So, what can be said after a mom-to-be finishes her Red Raspberry Tea, has taken her labor inducing walk, and bounced on her labor ball with no results? There are fun and new techniques that women are trying. So put down the castor oil and avoid the diarrhea, vomiting, cramping and dehydration that come along with it.
With a doctor’s permission and at a minimal risk, pop that thang girl. Shake it, work it, and by all means get low. Get things started at home before the doctor recommends inducing labor in the hospital or the scalpel comes out for the Cesarean. With the party going on outside of the womb, junior is sure to want to peep his head out and see what he’s missing.
14 Twerking Till It Works
Yeah, you are going to be a mom. You can still go twerk, twerk, twerk. If you have been living under a rock and somehow don’t know what twerking is, Urban Dictionary defines it as, “the act of moving/ shaking one’s ass/buns/bottom/buttocks/bum-bum in a circular, up-and-down, and side-to-side motion.”
Pregnant mom’s all over the place are shaking their bum bum’s to help induce labor. Some nurses are even encouraging twerking on hands and knees as a way to speed up delivery in the hospital. Don’t believe me, check out the YouTube videos and give it a try. If you decide to make it bounce, please make a video of it for your own enjoyment later. Twerking can be done in the comfort of your own home or out at the club. It may be the last time you have for a long while for a fun, guilt free girl’s night out.
13 Belly Dancing
If twerking isn’t your thing there are other creative dances that moms are turning to, to bring their baby into this world. All throughout time women have used belly dancing to help open their bodies and emotions during pregnancy and childbirth. This sensual dance involves hip circles, figure 8’s, hip rocking, pelvic spirals, and walking. It also helps relieve some back and hip pain which is an added bonus.
Another dance moms are turning to is the Thriller Dance. Mom’s dance Michael Jackson style along with the Thriller music video. There is also a labor inducing pregnancy dance which involves dancing, rubbing your belly, lunging, and squatting. Last but not least is freestyle dancing.
Take these final moments of your pregnancy to have fun in your pregnant body because after the dancing stops and the labor commences your body will never feel the same as it does in this glorious pregnant bliss.
12 Mowing The Lawn
Nothing like gearing up for your baby’s arrival by doing some yard work. Mowing the lawn is really a thing that women are trying to help speed the pregnancy along. It involves walking and mild activity. It involves getting fresh air and making sure that your yard looks picture perfect for when the flood of visitors starts to arrive after the baby’s birth.
While you are doing the yard work, you may want to try getting on all fours and weeding or planting. Some women swear that crawling and kneeling on all fours has helped to induce labor. It can be used as a grounding meditative experience for relaxing and destressing. Spending time out in the sun soaking up the Vitamin D could be truly beneficial.
However, by no means should your new found interest in yard work keep your man from sharing in the responsibility. You don’t want to overdo it.
11 Reaching For That Cream Pie
Many people assume that going all the way and reaching the peak of ecstacy always go hand and hand. If you are a female that can reach a peak during sex or climaxes multiple times while enjoying the ride, then more power to you.
If you are a woman who cannot seem to reach this glorious ending, then it’s a good idea to ask your man to get you off in other ways. If all else fails, take matters into your own hands because no one knows your body like you do. Reaching that final explosion feels wonderful which helps pregnant women to relax.
They also cause contractions which is part of what feels so good and why many women enjoy getting it on more while they are pregnant. When a woman can be satisfied naturally, the naturally occurring labor hormone oxytocin floods her system, causing a strengthening of labor contractions. Yet another good reason to get intimate before your body needs time to heal and recover after childbirth.
10 Cleaning The Floor On Hands And Knees
On a similar note, if you are trying the crawling technique you may want to try scrubbing your floors while you are at it. This is an unusual method to induce labor but women swear by it. Be careful of the cleaning agents you choose and try to use natural products. Being on all fours is a laboring technique that I loved in birthing class.
I could really get a nice back stretch on all fours. However, when it came time to give birth to my twins I was severely uncomfortable in this position.
Once again, your house will be spotless when you return from the hospital if you clean the floor as a means to induce labor…unless your strategy works and your water breaks on your spotless floor. In that case have the baby daddy clean it up and get your butt to the hospital.
9 Chest Stimulation
Right now your nipples are most likely extra sensitive and full of nutrient rich milk. Stimulating this part of the chest releases oxytocin which can help to get the labor going. It needs to be done more than just once. It should be a regular activity if this is your chosen method of jump starting that labor. It could be an activity that your partner and you could both take part in, wink wink, nudge nudge.
You can use manual stimulation by rolling them with your fingers. You can also try oral stimulation or a stream of warm water to add some excitement. That sounds fun, right? Making these techniques magical instead of monotonous chores will help with relaxation.
Also, if you are breastfeeding after giving birth your nipples will serve a totally new and different experience. They may even be sore in the beginning. So, enjoy this time before the baby comes to stimulate those parts and explore your ever changing motherly breasts.
8 Hiking Steep Hills Or Climbing Stairs
Get your birth in motion by getting in motion yourself. Although it’s common advice to take a walk or bounce on a labor ball, there are some other activities that women are turning to too speed up the process of getting the baby out of its cozy home inside mom.
If you are up to it, you may want to try a hike in the woods instead of a leisurely walk. The fresh air and exercise will invigorate. As always, do not push yourself too hard, and if hiking in the woods make sure to bring a cell phone just in case labor starts on your uphill journey.
If you don’t live close to any great hiking areas another alternative is climbing your stairs as a form of exercise. This type of movement could cause the baby to move too. It’s a great way to relieve stress and keep your body strong for the big day!
7 Swinging On A Swing
In preparation for your new little one’s arrival take a trip to the park. Observe the children and their parents and take some time to feel like a kid again. Women all over the place are swinging on swings at the playground to induce labor. Swinging is fun and after the baby is born you will most likely be spending a lot of time at the playground and on the swing set with your child.
Similar to this is the bumpy car ride trick. Mom’s all over are buckling up and going off road to induce. Driving over bumpy surfaces is known to settle the baby into the pelvis, putting more pressure on the cervix. Obviously we don’t want the terrain to get too crazy. Other techniques that we have not yet mentioned that have this same effect are squatting, galloping, swimming, and yoga. Keeping active is key to meeting your new baby.
6 Getting Intimate
Many times during pregnancy we get so caught up with what the baby will need that we forget to take care of our own needs and the needs of our man. All long as you have the green light from your doctor to engage in intimate activity up until the baby is born, then go for it. Intercourse is one of the most effective methods recommended to help bring about labor.
Oil up that attractively curvy body of yours and enjoy yourself. The more intimacy the better. Some people claim that it takes a marathon to induce labor. As always, you know your own limitations so make sure you are comfortable. This could cause a closeness and strengthen your connection with your partner before bringing your child into the mix.
Among the many reasons knocking the boots is good for inducing labor, a big reason is the sperm. The sperm help to soften and dilate the cervix.
4 Eating Spicy Foods
Now’s the time to check out that new Mexican Restaurant that you’ve always wanted to try. With the due date on the horizon there may be little time for romantic dinners in your future. Get the extra spicy salsa and add hot sauce to your main course. Spicy foods cause your body to release hormones that trigger contractions in the uterus.
Whatever the reason, add some spice to your night and maybe the baby will decide that the time is right.
Other spices rumored to induce labor are saffron, curry, basil, oregano, and thyme. There are also common labor inducing foods that women mention time and time again. Pineapple is one of the most famous. Other possible labor inducing foods include balsamic vinegar, Chinese food, and natural licorice. Teas that women swear by are thyme tea and Raspberry leaf tea.
3 Complementary Treatments
Different forms of bodywork are proving to help women along on their journey to motherhood. When the time has come and you need that extra push to get labor in action then it may be time try something new and different. Some well-known methods that women are turning to include Acupuncture, Acupressure, and Reflexology.
Acupuncture uses needles to stimulate certain points on a pregnant woman's body to encourage labor contractions. If you are not a big fan of needles, Acupressure and Reflexology are all alternative treatments that do not involve needles. They can stimulate contractions and help bring about labor. As always, make sure the practitioners are certified or licensed in their specialty.
2 Visualization Exercises
We have all heard of mind over matter, right? Advocates of natural birth strongly believe in a woman’s ability to create the labor she wants through thought. According to believers of this theory you just need to envision your body giving birth.
You create the picture in your mind using knowledge, affirmations, and visualization. Knowing what’s actually going to happen within your body, helps you to relax and stay in control. This method asks you to tune into your body and know the details of it, like how long your vagina and how far your baby needs to travel from your uterus to your arms.
They recommend watching a real live birth to help acquire this knowledge.
Affirmations are then used to positively communicate to your brain what you want to happen to naturally induce labor. Some positive affirmations offered by, My Pregnant Health, include the following:
- I am a strong, capable woman ready to give birth.
- My cervix is ready to dilate. I am ready to give birth.
- I am ready to meet my baby.
- I can handle a natural labor: bring it on!
- I deserve to have the birth I desire.
- I accept this labor as my labor.
- I am relaxed and prepared for my baby to come to me.
- My baby moves gently along in his/her journey.
Ultimately, visualization, is the key aspect to induce labor. It involves using mind to picture events and then your brain gets the message and makes it happen. It’s recommended to visually induce labor by picturing your cervix dilating and opening, then your water breaking. It includes feeling the sensations that accompany these pictures.
Ultimately and naturally, it’s the opportunity for the mom to be the boss of her own labor.
1 Eggplant Parmigiana
Women everywhere are claiming that Eggplant Parmigiana was the final stimulant that induced their labor. Scalini's old-fashioned Italian restaurant in Cobb County, Georgia has been made famous for their Eggplant parmigiana that gets labor going. Over 300 women have gone into labor within 48 hours of eating this dish.
The pictures of all of these 300 “eggplant babies,” adorn the walls of the restaurant. Scalini’s is so confident that their Eggplant induces labor that they offer a free meal to any woman who does not go into labor with 48 hours of eating it. For those who can’t make it to Georgia, here is the recipe.
Cook Time: 60-120 min
3 medium sized eggplants
1 cup flour
6 eggs, beaten
4 cups fine Italian bread crumbs (seasoned)
Olive oil, for sautéing
8 cups marinara sauce (recipe below)
1/2 cup Romano cheese (grated)
1/2 cup Parmesan cheese (grated)
1 1/2 pounds mozzarella cheese (shredded)
2 cups ricotta cheese
Scalini's Marinara Sauce
2 Tablespoons garlic, chopped
3 Tablespoons olive oil
8 cups tomatoes (fresh or canned), chopped
1 cup onions, chopped
1/2 cup fresh parsley, chopped
1 teaspoon oregano
1 teaspoon crushed red pepper
1/8 cup fresh sweet basil, chopped
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon black pepper
After you wash the eggplant, slice them into 1/4-inch-thick slices. You may choose to peel the eggplant before you slice it. However, you may want to leave the skin on since it contains a lot of vitamins.
Place the eggplant slices on a layer of paper towels and sprinkle with a little salt, then cover with another layer of paper towels and hold it down with something heavy to drain the excess moisture. Let them sit for about an hour.
Working with one slice of eggplant at a time, dust with flour, dip in beaten eggs, then coat well with breadcrumbs. Sauté in preheated olive oil on both sides until golden brown.
In baking dish, alternate layers of marinara sauce, eggplant slices, ricotta, parmesan and Romano cheeses, until you fill the baking dish, about 1/8 inch from the top. Cover with shredded mozzarella cheese, and bake for 25 minutes in a 375 degree oven. Let sit for 10 minutes before serving.
Scalini's Marinara Sauce
Lightly sauté the onions in olive oil in large pot for a few minutes.
Add garlic and sauté another minute. Add tomatoes and bring sauce to a boil, then turn heat low. Add remaining ingredients, stir, cover and let simmer for one hour, stirring occasionally.
