Kim Kardashian is now considered an authority on just about everything. If Kim wears an outfit, it sells out. If Kim says that blonde hair is "in," every stylist in Hollywood will be recommending blonde. This time ten years ago, parenting was the one thing that Kim wasn't an authority on. The single party girl days are over, though. With three kids, solid family values, but still a lot that gets moms talking, Kim is now a bit of an authority on parenting.
Kim is a mother to North (aged five), Saint (just turned four), and baby Chicago (10 months). In 2012, Kim married Kanye West in a lavish Italian wedding that People reported cost a staggering $2.8 million. In 2018, KimYe live in a $20 million Bel Air mansion. The kids living under that roof may be surrounded by luxury, but not everything about these kids is glam.
"Motherhood has taught me how to prioritize," Kim has said. Yes, this makeup mogul isn't just prioritizing her foundation brushes. Hands-on parenting is Kim's style, and fans can see it for themselves on Keeping Up With The Kardashians.
Baby Gucci. Young Versace. All those gala appearances. It's fair to say that the Kardashian kids aren't living "normal" childhoods. Then again, watching them run around Kim's kitchen, one could easily picture the average wealthy home in America (with a few extras). Run around they might, but these kids are living under a strict roof. Here are 14 things that Kim doesn't let her kids do (plus 7 she actually does).
Nap times aren't the same with every Kardashian mother. While Kourtney Kardashian appears to be the most laid-back when it comes to schedules, Kim runs a tighter ship. Kim's strict nap schedules started with North, and she's continued them with Saint and Chicago.
"I'm really strict on nap time, and sleeping in her own crib," Kim said.
Speaking to Mail Online, Kim compared her parenting philosophies to those of her sister. "Like, Kourtney's style is where her kids sleep in bed with her." Kourtney finds that co-sleeping worked for her three kids, but it's sleeping in your own bed with Kim.
Watch any episode of KUWTK, and you'll see Kim walking around a very well-maintained (and fancy) home. It's dripping in marbles, but those white couches aren't covered in cookie crumbs and paint. "Minimal and modern" is how Kim described her home decor on her website.
"The kids' playroom is the one room in the house where I let them run wild. That's where all the markers, paints, and colors are. By the time they're done there, they have no desire to take a pen to our white furniture!" Kim said. A smart solution to 3 kids under the age of six. Not your average home, though.
North West is now a fashion icon in her own right. Vogue writes entire articles about this 5-year-old's style, and we've got to say, North wears some pretty epic outfits. "Every morning and every night is her time to shine," Kim told Vancouver Sun about her beloved daughter.
North herself now comes out with casual quotes about the makeup that she "sometimes carries in [her] purse to church."
"She can wear costumes," Kim said, adding: "She wears wild pyjamas." In 2016, Kim revealed that North was already designing her own outfits. When it comes to picking them, Kim told Life And Style Mag that North "loves to pick out her own clothes."
Aha, but there's a catch! The Kardashian kids are some of the most stylish kids around. Looking more carefully at their wardrobes though, we've noticed a pattern. Namely, that a high percentage of those outfits are Yeezy. Kanye West designs the entire Yeezy line. Kim wears Yeezy in parking lot promo shoots, and most of KUWTK has a #YeezyWardrobe.
"I put Kanye's big chains around her," Kim told Vogue about North. This pic showed a little North West being the most adorable daddy mini-me. If these kids aren't in Yeezy, they're being spotted in Adidas sportswear (which Yeezy is affiliated with).
Moms are fascinated by what other moms feed their kids. While Kourtney has shared that a typical lunch can be "gluten-free rice tortillas with carrots and celery," the gluten-free and dairy-free lifestyle isn't one that Kim is so strict on. Being health conscious? That's something that Kim and Kourt have in common.
"I love cheddar bunnies instead of goldfish crackers because they are made with more natural ingredients," Kim wrote on her website. Annie's Cheddar Bunnies are organic. In Style reports that Kim's other snack faves include raisins, rice milk, and organic applesauce. Kim treats herself to McDonald's from time to time, but nutrition is important to her.
Fashion Week used to be a high-profile event filled with designers, stylists, and fashion icons. While that hasn't changed, the Milan, New York, Paris, and New York event has received a new addition– celeb kids. Beyonce took Blue Ivy to fashion week as a toddler, and so did Kim.
You're looking at the editor of Vogue. Not many toddlers get to sit next to Anna Wintour herself.
North has been to Yeezy fashion weeks. Here she is sitting front-row alongside the editor of Vogue herself. In 2015, North made headlines for throwing a tantrum at NY Fashion Week. She was still tiny then, though.
While Kim openly admits that she is a "strict" parent, there's still plenty of room for fun. While you won't see the kids accompanying Kim to grown-up events like 2Chainz's wedding at the Versace Mansion, most daytime appearances see this hands-on mom carrying her kids.
"Maybe on weekends, [North] will come and sleep in the bed with us," Kim told Mail Online. Kim and Kanye have busy schedules themselves, but they work hard to make precious family time happen. We've seen pics of Kim cuddling up to the kids in bed, where everyone seems to be having a good time.
It's every little girl's dream, right? Ballerina outfits are fun for mommy to shop for, but they're 100 times more fun for the person wearing them. North was still young here when she and Penelope Disick hit a Los Angeles ballet class with Kourtney. Kim has been seen on separate occasions taking North to ballet (as has Kanye).
It's the tutus, though– boy, did those make headlines. North wore a baby Balmain jacket with her white tutu during one outing. The adult version of that jacket retails for $2,000. These kids might do it designer style, but ballet is good in Kim's books.
The Kardashian kids are surrounded by luxury. $910 Gucci bibs have been spotted on Khloe Kardashian's social media. Baby Stormi gets her own backstage room during Travis Scott's concerts. With high earners for parents, you might think that these kids are all set. Think again.
"Are you kidding me? Of course she's [going to have a job]," Kim said. "She will have to work for what she wants."
Kim told ES: "In was saying that earlier to my friends: I wonder what North's first job is gonna be. And they were like: What? She's gonna have a job?" Kim's reply was: "Of course she is."
There are pros and cons of living in Kardashian-level luxury. The pros are definitely the huge homes, giant pools, endless toys, and top-of-the-range everything. The downside? Well, you're a celebrity. Security is a real concern. Following Kim's harrowing 2016 Paris robbery, security was tightened across this family.
Calabasas is where these kids live. It's sunny, but the community is gated. For Kylie Jenner, it's electronic gates (that even she has trouble getting past). North, Saint, and West travel internationally with their parents, but when they're home, it's mostly a "stay in the area" kind of deal. Wandering off isn't an option.
For most of us, using social media is a choice. We pick which selfies we want to upload and which filters we want to use. If we're having an "off" day, we can also tune right out. Not the case if you're a Kardashian kid.
"I take pictures of North all the time and dress her up," Kim said. Where those pics end up? Social media.
121 million people follow Kim on Instagram. Kim's kids have their own fan accounts, and every picture that's posted is commented on and sometimes even critiqued. Social media is a job for these kids (although here it definitely seemed fun).
Kim's own glam squad costs up to $11,500 a day. Yes, that's between $2,000 and $3,000 each for her stylist, hair stylist, and makeup artists. Per day. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree, though.
"She's coming for me and stealing my glam squad!" Kim joked about North in 2018. Back in 2016, Life and Style Mag was already reporting that North West has a $5,000-per-week glam squad. "She has Hermès handbags and her own jewel-encrusted Balmain dress. She loves having her hair and nails done," was the report. North's glam squad comes with a glam room, diamond-encrusted mirrors, and gold-plated "North" signs.
Kris Jenner stays pretty youthful for a 63 year-old who is running an empire. With 9 grandchildren and a beady eye over all 5 of her kids' business ventures, Kris doesn't seem to stop. In 2013, The Daily Mail revealed that this grandma doesn't like being called one.
"I don't like Grandma, so they call me Lovely!" Kris said. Kris added that "at first I was Grandma, and of a sudden I didn't like the way that sounded. My mom had a friend called Lovely and I thought it was the cutest name." Kris is dating Corey Gamble (who is in his mid-30s).
In 2018, Kim took the kids to Disneyland. North was spotted holding a shiny smartphone, but don't think that these kids get screen time whenever they like. Even Kourtney's kids are only allowed "30 minutes of video game during the week and an hour on the weekends," according to her own website post.
"There has to be rules. When they wake up, they have their breakfast with the family and then they get their phones," Kim said.
Speaking at Beautycon 2018, Kim said that kids are "fragile." In 2017, Kim told Good to Know that "dinner time, breakfast time, there's no phone." Kim also doesn't believe that bedtime and screen time mix.
Where the Kardashians go, so too do the cameras. The minute Kim and her family get out of a car, it's flashing everywhere and people calling her name. In 2015, Kim took to her website to reveal her rules for being famous. They are: "Try not to smile, wear sunglasses, and DON'T chat to the paparazzi."
"Every time I'd go to the gym or eat, the paparazzi would ask me questions and I'd be like: Hey guys! I like the attention." Kim has toned things down since having kids, though. While she doesn't seem to want the kids talking to the paparazzi, privacy just isn't an option for this family.
Kids always seem at their happiest with chocolate smeared all over their faces, right? North West definitely seemed to be enjoying herself here. Kourtney "trying this whole vegan thing" was how Kim described her sister– Kim isn't against Kourtney's parenting methods. They're just different views.
Kim isn't vegan. Her kids eat meat. Turkey slices and string cheese are two foods that Kim has revealed are in the Kardashian household. In 2017, one of Kim's barbecue parties showed baby back ribs and mac and cheese. Kim is strict on snack foods (preferring organic), but the odd treat is fine with her.
Kids will always want to play. Whether they're growing up on hard times or living the high life, running around is part of being a kid. While Kim has outlined that the house's playroom has pens and markers, there's a side to Kim's "kiddy fun" that's definitely not ordinary.
In 2014, Hello reported that North West had been gifted a $50,000 Hermès purse. The purpose? It was something for North "to paint." Kim later took to social media (and the streets) carrying the bag. "Me & my bae out today," she wrote, adding: "Wearing my favorite bag painted by my little North."
Kim Kardashian is no ordinary celebrity. Part of a super-breed, this mom runs the KKW Beauty Empire like a pro– in 2018, The Sun reported that Kim "earned $5 million in 5 minutes" from her fragrances. Travel is a huge part of Kim's job, but she works hard to keep the kids with her.
Please. You're not a Kardashian unless you fly #PrivateJet. It's still family time, though.
"I cut out a lot of things that I felt weren't 100 percent meaningful to me or worth the time that I was spending with my family," Kim told Variety. Family comes first. Then again, so does first-class service in a private jet.
You've probably noticed by now that none of Kim's kids have middle names. North, Saint, and Chicago definitely have unusual names, but that's it. When Khloe Kardashian appeared on The Ellen Show to talk baby names, she revealed that Kardashian names should be "short, easy-to-spell, one syllable– that kind of vibe."
Both North and Saint are one-syllable names. Chicago breaks the pattern, but it's still a relatively easy name. North was named because it's the "highest point" according to Kim. Kanye's belief that "people live up their names" explains Saint. Chicago was named after Kanye's hometown. Still, you don't get a middle name.
Just kidding– well, kind of. In 2018, Kim was venting on KUWTK. Apparently, she and Kanye had been arguing. "He was like, I've slaved around for you making clothes for you to make sure you find the best outfit and you let me go out wearing a Jesus Band-Aid," Kim said. Kim added that Kanye was "jealous" of Saint, for whom she "would've gotten the right Band-Aid."
"Are you fighting with Saint? Is this a thing?" Kim exclaimed. Kim and Kanye may seem mismatched, but the love runs deep in this marriage. The kids? Well, they seem to get the best pick of the Band-Aids!
Kim's entire career is built on being a public figure. Appearances, parties, conventions, and 100% promoting that brand are how Kim makes her millions (including nights like these).
"Matching my hair to the Lambo!" You can take the mom out of the Kardashian...
In 2018, Kim famously matched her green hair to her green Lamborghini. This was a late night, so not kid-appropriate. The Kardashian kids are looked after by highly qualified and carefully selected nannies. Mommy time? That's what those weekend snuggles are for.
