Families come together, through the good times and the bad. Joyous and blissful occasions such as wedding, births, anniversaries, and graduations are celebrated regularly and treasured; moments where milestones are met and welcomed with delight and enjoyment. Not everything can always be bright and cheery, though. Tragedies happen. It’s how people handle these tragedies as a family that makes all the difference.
Life happens, and it happens to everyone. We cannot always control what gets thrown our way, but what we can control is how we react and deal with the situations that get thrown at us. When we go through these dreaded tragedies, and our worst nightmares have been laid out before us, we look to our loved ones for the strength and courage to be able to overcome what we may have once seen as unbearable circumstances of fate.
As a single element, we may feel that we are incapable of surviving single-handedly. When families come together and unite, the impossible may no longer seem as impossible. Unfortunately, not all families are able to survive when times get difficult, and they crumble under the tension and pressure. However, the families that are able to survive the odds always make it out stronger and are capable of achieving anything in the end. They know what it truly means to be able to have almost lost it all, and are always more grateful for life’s tiniest of blessings.
15 Michael J. Fox And Tracy Pollan
Fox and Pollan have been married since 1988. It takes a lot of patience and a lot of hard effort to make a marriage last as long as they have. Marriage is no easy task, especially for people within the Hollywood industry. To make matters worse, in 1991, just three short years after Michael and Tracy got married, Michael was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.
Parkinson’s disease is a disorder that affects the nervous system, and a specific chemical made within certain nerve cells called dopamine becomes erratic. Dopamine is what controls the body’s movements. When the chemical dopamine is all out of whack, the body’s movements can become uncontrollable and cause things like tremors. Michael and Tracy have been able to get through Michael’s serious medical condition together, even though there is no cure for Parkinson’s. They were able to survive the odd’s where others may have failed, and they are still holding strong.
14 The Beckham Family
The Beckham Family, famously known for their superstar dad and mom, David and Victoria, who have been married since 1999. They have four children together and seem to have the picture perfect life. David is an elite soccer star, and Victoria is a former Spice Girl. It’s a little-known fact, but David suffers from OCD or obsessive compulsive disorder. At times, it can get hard to live with someone who has OCD. They have tendencies to be perfectionists. David will put things in pairs, or straight lines and organize items. He will even go as far as to throw out or remove soda cans if they fall into an odd number in his refrigerator.
The Beckham’s one son Romeo also suffers from a severe seizure disorder called Epilepsy. With the Beckham’s being a family in the spotlight, they are always being photographed, and so much as the flash from a camera can cause Romeo to go into a seizure. The Beckham family has been through a lot between David and Romeo’s medical condition, but this family has survived the odds and made it through together.
13 Tori Spelling And Dean McDermott
The Spelling and McDermott family just keeps on growing and in a very public eye. Tori and Dean are no strangers to putting their affairs out in the open with reality TV shows, which can cause strains on any relationship. Tori and Dean have been married since 2008. Speaking of affairs, this couple went public with a massive affair that Dean had not too long ago in 2016 when they were close to celebrating their 10 year wedding anniversary.
An affair would have torn most families apart, but Tori said that in the aftermath of it all, it actually brought them closer together and made their relationship grow stronger. The couple also have five children. On top of a very busy household, the couple is also having some very public financial difficulties. What would have broken most people down and turned them against each other, this couple was able to survive and thrive as an entity working as one.
12 Michael Buble And Luisana Lopilato
The Buble and Lopilato family had received heart-wrenching news in 2016 when they found out and confirmed that their 3-year-old on Noah had been diagnosed with liver cancer. Finding out that a loved one has cancer at any age is heartbreaking, but when the individual in question is that young it just hits so much harder. Michael made a statement that he had refused to sing another note until his beloved son was deemed cancer-free, and is in an overall state of good health.
Luck was with this family; because it was confirmed later in 2017 that little Noah was finally cancer free. Michael is now able to go about his singing career again. This family was able to survive the odds during a devastating period in their lives, showing that it is still possible to come out of unspeakable circumstances standing taller than ever.
11 John Travolta And Kelly Preston
The Travolta and Preston family have been through a very traumatic, and heartbreaking experience. They have been through every parent’s worst nightmare. In 2009, John awoke to find that his son, Jett, unconscious at the word of their nanny. John tried numerous times to revive his son to no avail. Jett suffered from a seizure disorder, and had fallen in the bathroom and hit his head on the bathroom tub rendering him unconscious.
John was very close with his son and mourned the loss with his wife Kelly. John accredits his faith and family to be the reasons that he and his family were able to pull through such a great tragedy. This family has suffered something that would have caused so many others to give up hope. They were able to survive the odds and were able to continue to grow and be there for one another.
10 Elton John And David Furnish
The John and Furnish family expanded in 2010, by way of a surrogate mother, with son Zachary and again in 2013, by same surrogate mother, with son Elijah. Elton and David got married in 2014. While life has been good to this family, not everything has always been so easy for this couple, especially with Elton and David being a renowned gay couple in Hollywood. LGBT rights have come a long way, but unfortunately, total equality is still a milestone we have yet to reach.
Unfortunately, this happy couple had been unable to adopt due to laws not being equal for gay couples as they are for straight couples, and having children was something that Elton and David both wanted. Luckily, with the help of a surrogate, they both got their dream, as stated above. But this couple had to fight, together, for what they wanted, and had wished for. When others would have most likely given up, Elton and David pushed forward and survived the odds.
9 Brooke Shields And Chris Henchy
The Shields and Henchy family is now a happy, loving and thriving family but it wasn’t always like that. Brooke and Chris have been married since 2001, and they had tried to conceive a child for the longest time, and even resorted to fertility treatments. After suffering through a devastating miscarriage, Brooke and Chris welcomed their first child into the world in 20013, a daughter named Rowan. After Brooke had Rowan that is when the darkness began to take over this family’s lives.
Brooke developed a severe mental illness called postpartum depression and could not bond with her newborn baby regardless of how much she tried. Brooke had gotten so severely depressed that she even thought about ending her own life. Eventually, Brooke and Chris reached out for help and Brooke began medical treatment and started antidepressants. Things began to turn around, and Brooke got better. Three years later, they had their second daughter. Through heartbreak and trauma, this family stood by each other and survived the odds and combated both mental illness and miscarriage together.
8 Hayden Panettiere And Wladimir Klitschko
Hayden and fiancé Wladimir went through a difficult time when they welcomed their first born daughter into the world in December of 2014. Hayden, like with what Brooke Shields went through, had also struggled with the common, but yet devastating mental illness called postpartum depression after giving birth. Hayden had felt a lot of negativity towards her own daughter, and she also couldn’t help but feel like she wanted to harm or hurt her as well.
Hayden said that the emotions were uncontrollable. By the time Hayden and Wladimir's daughter, Kaya, had turned 17-months-old, Hayden was still feeling the negative effects of postpartum depression in her everyday life and sought out treatment once more. Hayden is no longer struggling with this debilitating illness and she, Wladimir, and Kaya have survived the odds and are doing great.
7 Tracy Morgan And Megan Wollover
The Morgan and Wollover family have been through a rough patch that could have been a whole of a lot more devastating than it was. In June of 2014, Tracy and a few of his associates were in a horrific six-vehicle car accident on the New Jersey Turnpike. Tracy had several broken bones and was in a coma for 8 days, his good friend James was killed in the accident, and others were also injured.
When Tracy awoke from the coma, he had gone blind for 6 days and had no memory of the accident. This was a very traumatic and devastating time for Tracy and his family. He was lucky to make it out alive because it could have turned out so much worse for him and his loved ones. He needed months of intensive rehabilitation. His, then, fiancé stuck by his side faithfully throughout the entire grueling process and they were married a year later. Tracy and Megan survived the odds when things seemed to be at their worst.
6 The Estefan Family
Gloria and Emilio Estefan got married in 1978. That is almost 40 years of marriage, and that does not come easily for anyone no matter who you are. Marriage is hard work and takes a lot of time, effort, and love. One would have to be able to get through the difficult times, no matter how bad things get to achieve a milestone of 40 years. In 1990, Gloria’s tour bus had gotten into a bad accident and Gloria needed to be taken to the hospital. The accident had affected and caused problems to her reproductive organs, and Gloria and Emilio had desperately wanted another child.
The Estefan’s odds of conceiving were slim to none. After a lot of failed attempts, disappointment, and treatments the couple was finally able to conceive their miracle child. Unfortunately, this baby was to be their only one. But with their support in each other, they were able to overcome the odds when they thought all else was impossible. This goes to show that sometimes the impossible, is not always actually impossible.
5 Neil Patrick Harris And David Burtka
The Harris and Burtka family household mainly seems like a fairy tale to those who read about their fabulously flamboyant lifestyle in magazines, but one would have never known the personal struggles that they have gone through. Neil and David started their family off with the birth of their twins. They had to go through the process of finding a surrogate mother to give life to their children in 2010. They were wed four years later in 2014.
Neil found it difficult to come out as being gay in today’s society, and he met his husband, David, before he was even "out" to the public. It’s never an easy task to have a family be continuously publicized in the limelight being labeled as what is, now, considered to be a modern family. Together, the Harris and Burtka family continue to grow together, and they can overcome any challenge that is placed before them. Thankfully, Neil and David are very much in love today.
4 The Johnson Family
Earvin “Magic” Johnson and wife Cookie have been through, what some people might describe as surreal life events shortly after their marriage in 1991. Magic had to have a life-altering conversation with his wife only 45 days after they said their vows. He had to try to find a way to break it to the love of his life that he was HIV positive, and that she needed to get tested for the deadly virus.
Cookie explained that she was in shock and that she basically just fell to her knees. After all, what is one to say when their husband gives them news that their lives will never be the same again? They worked through it though. After waiting for what probably seemed like the longest 10 days of her life; Cookie found out that she tested negative for the HIV virus. She continued to stand by her husband and still does to this day. This family has survived the odds when others would have ran away from the situation at hand.
3 Jennifer Hudson And David Otunga
Jennifer and fiancé David got engaged in September of 2008, but a few weeks later, this family went through a person’s worst possible nightmare that a person wouldn’t even wish on their worst enemy. Her brother-in-law had murdered her mother, her brother, and her 7-year-old nephew. Jennifer lost those that meant the most to her in the blink of an eye. The heart-wrenching devastation would be enough to send anyone over the edge.
With the support, love, and patience from her caring fiancé, somehow Jennifer was able to overcome this debilitating situation and was able to continue on with her life when others would have wanted to give up. In 2009, Jennifer and David gave birth to their first son. This family was able to survive the odds against such unspeakable horrors.
2 The Bosh Family
The Bosh family received some devastating news in 2015 after they returned home from a vacation in Haiti. Chris had sought out medical treatment after feeling unusually tired, and it had been found that he had blood clots in his lungs which can become a serious medical complication. If left untreated, it can lead to death. His wife Adrienne stayed faithfully by his side while he was undergoing treatments.
Lucky for this family and their four children that they sought out medical treatment when they did because they found the blood clots early enough to prevent any kind of serious complications. Chris gained back his strength little by little with his loving wife by his side, and everything turned out just fine for this happy couple. Medical issues can sometimes cause relationships to crumble, but this marriage survived the odds.
1 The Sykes Family
Wanda and Alex Sykes got married in 2008, and in 2009 they expanded their family with the addition of twins. Wanda and Alex are what would be considered a modern family in today’s society, and unfortunately like with Neil Patrick Harris and Elton John, gay families do not have the same equality rights are straight families do, especially in Hollywood. To add in some extra complications, in 2011 Wanda received some distressing news about her health and well-being. She was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Fortunately, Wanda was only in the early stages, so she opted for a double mastectomy to increase her chances of ridding herself of the disease and improving her chances at getting better, and remaining healthy for her family. Alex stayed by Wanda’s side for the entire process, and they survived the odds together and are as happy as ever.
