Before I had my kids, I really wanted to breastfeed them because I knew about the benefits as far as helping you bond with your baby, as well as helping them fight infections and I believed it also made kids smarter. However, after I had my daughter, I was devasted about the fact that I tried to breastfeed for 6 days and I was becoming sicker and she was not gaining weight. So I had no choice but to formula feed, but she did thrive and she is fine despite that.

However, even though formula-fed babies turn out just fine and that some women choose to formula-feed rather than to breastfeed, we have to simply agree that fed-is-best, no matter how it is done. Because I was not able to breastfeed, I am the last person on Earth who would ever judge a mom for breastfeeding a child that is just too old to be fed that way, like past the age of 18 months, or certainly past the age of 2!

However, I do know of many moms who had successfully been able to breastfeed their babies that also agree that breastfeeding a child over 18 months is excessive. I mean, the fact of the matter is, there is a time and a place to make huge transitions such as moving your toddler out of a crib and into a bed and the same would apply for breast, or bottle feeding!

But there are some known celeb moms who have breastfed their kids for way too long, and let's look at 15 of them here, right now.

15 Mayim Bialik Nursed Her Son Until He Was Four

Well, it is quite known that the The Big Bang Theory star is an extremely passionate advocate of extended breastfeeding, considering the fact that she breastfed her son until he was four years of age! Bialik actually shared this on her blog: I never ever believed that I would be nursing a child over the age of 3. But now that I am, I believe when he is done, he will be done. I believe that he will not need to nurse before he walks down the aisle to greet his bride ... and I believe that nursing is natural and beautiful and wonderful.

Like I said before, since I was not able to nurse my daughter like I had hoped, I completely do understand that being able to breastfeed your baby is truly a beautiful thing. That was also why I was so incredibly crushed when I could not do it. However, at a certain point, the line has to be drawn somewhere- well before the age of four!

14 Kelly Preston Didn't Want To Stop Breastfeeding

Back n 2012, Kelly Preston revealed to People Magazine that she was still breastfeeding her 16-month-old son, Benjamin, at the time and even stated that it will be hard for her when she needs to stop, since she absolutely loves nursing so much. Personally, I don't see an issue with breastfeeding a child until the age of 2, as long as it is mixed with other foods, but then it is time to start weaning them off.

However, it was not clearly stated when she actually stopped breastfeeding her son, if she ever did. But it sounded like at the time, she had no plans to stop anytime soon. At that age, she was still nursing him a few times a night, and a few times a day. She said he even came up to her and pointed to her source of his food and said "Mama, more, more". Since they both enjoyed it, who knows how long it kept going on for, really!

13 Kelly Rutherford Breastfed Her Son Until He Was 3

Kelly Rutherford, the Gossip Girl actress nursed her son, Hermes, until after he turned 3 years of age. As a matter of fact, she was nursing her newborn daughter and 3-year-old son simultaneously, and thought it was so adorable when they were nursing together. She said he would look at her, check her out and then put his hand on her tiny feet. Now that is so sweet.

Alright, well I have to admit that when I have this image in my mind, it is incredibly sweet. I mean thinking about the little guy's hand being placed on his baby sister's feet while they are both being breastfed is kind of cute. I admit it. But if I think about the fact that Hermes was 3 and being breastfed with his newborn sister takes away the cuteness of it immediately. If they were cuddling with mom together, then that is an adorable image!

12 Gwen Stefani Breastfed For 2 Years

Gwen Stefani has 3 sons and breastfed all of them well into their second years, and even did so while she was on tour. She did it because it was convenient for her lifestyle, which would be quite understandable and she even believed that breastfeeding made one of her sons very bright.

In fact, when she was traveling with her son Apollo, she took a picture of herself giving him something to eat at a restaurant and posted that picture on Instagram. The point of that was to show the world that wherever she goes, the boys go with her. That is why she breastfed her sons because wherever she went, they had to go with her and she made it clear, without any apologies, that she was happy that she breastfed them as long as she did.

Stefani, like many of these celeb moms, or any mom that is pro-breastfeeding, has gone great lengths to help break the stigma of breastfeeding in public, as well as breastfeeding her toddlers at an age that would be considered to be too old. She is simply just bold that way.

11 Kourtney Kardashian Continued To Breastfeed Because It Made Her Happy

It is a known fact that the oldest Kardashian sister has always been a huge fan of breastfeeding, since she nursed both her son Mason and daughter Penelope, well past the one year mark. The million dollar question is, how far past a year-old did she breastfeed her kids? Even though her family was protesting her decision to keep breastfeeding her kids past an "acceptable" age, she fired back.

She even said that they had told her that it was time to move on, and she even said that she started weaning her kids, until she decided to not wean them from breastfeeding! That applied to her son anyway, since she told E! Online that when she was starting to wean him, she said "Why am I doing this? I'm happy and he's happy.'"

Well, everyone wants to see their kids happy. But what makes them happy isn't always the best thing for them, and there are times when moving on is necessary.

10 Nelly Furtado Breastfed Her Daughter Until She Was 2

Nelly Furtado was very open about the fact that she breastfed her daughter, Nevis, for two years. This is what she wanted to do and she has no regrets, but she was also quite annoyed by being judged by other moms for making this decision. She was tired of hearing them say that she did it to lose weight.

In fact, she said that breastfeeding does not cause weight loss and even stated a while back the following: "Whoever says breastfeeding is a good way to lose weight is a liar. I nursed my daughter for two years and as soon as I stopped I had more energy. You can do more things."

Personally, one of the reasons that I wanted to breastfeed was because I thought it was a way to get the pregnancy weight off quicker. I feel less bad knowing that that is not always the case now!

9 Salma Hayek - 1 More Week!

It is a known fact that Salma Hayek breastfed a starving one-week-old baby while visiting Sierra Leone, which is most definitely a war-zone. She was able to do that because she was still nursing her one-year-old daughter Valentina at the time, and made it clear that she had absolutely no intentions to stop. She even told Style Magazine one time, "I'm like an alcoholic. It is like, I don't care if I cry, I don't care if I am fat, I am just going to do it for one more week, one more month, and then when I see how much good it is doing her and I can't stop."

It is a good thing she acknowledged that she was addicted to breastfeeding, but like all addictions, they can get the better of you, and there had to come a time when both, she and her daughter, had to move on. That said, she needed to do something to make that happen by getting her addiction under control.

8 Alanis Morisette Breastfed For 2 Years

Back in the day, whenever you thought of Alanis Morissette, you would have thought of her as an angsty singer. But she isn't that way anymore. She is far from it, and now is most definitely a devoted mom. But that shouldn't be a huge shock, since people can change quite drastically, and she most definitely did.

In fact, she is so devoted that she was nursing her son Ever until after the age of 2, and she was prepared to go even longer than that. In fact, Alanis said in an interview on Good Morning America, that " [she knows] some children who have weaned naturally at two years, some kids wean naturally a couple of years later."

Alanis Morisette certainly shares quite a bit of things in common with the other celeb moms that were discussed already, and there are plenty more to talk about as well!

7 Deloris Jordan - 3 Years Long

Deloris Jordan is Michael Jordan's mother who also had co-written the book, Salt in His Shoes, among others. She admitted that she breastfed Michael Jordan until he was 3-years-old. She not only was open about this very fact but made it clear that she had no regrets for doing so either. In fact, she even said a while back that she credits her breastfeeding her son for so long, for the fact that he became such an amazing athlete.

Even though breast milk has so many amazing properties and benefits, it is highly unlikely that it had anything to do with the fact that her son became such a great athlete. It is a known fact that Michael Jordan had a tough time achieving what he has today, since he was one of those who said that in order to succeed, one must expect to face many failures along the way without giving up.

6 Jada Pinkett Smith Breastfed For 18 Months

It is a common belief that very busy moms, whether they are celebs or not have to eventually forgo breastfeeding in order to keep up with their crazy schedules. They can always bottle-feed, whether it is by pumped breastmilk or even formula, which frightens many moms who believe that breastfeeding is the only way to feed a baby. However, Jada Pinkett Smith, who was a busy actress when her son Jaden was a baby, did not want him to ever see a bottle, and took him everywhere she went instead.

Smith admitted that she breastfed Jaden until he was 18 months old, which compared to how long the other moms (like Kelly Rutherford and Jamie Grumet) breastfed their babies is nothing. But, she took him literally all over the place - to her award shows, premieres, film sets, etc. so that he could be fed whenever he was hungry, and she absolutely would not have chosen any other way to do so!

5 Erykah Badu Breastfed Her Son Until He Was 2

The soul singer, Erykah Badu breastfed her son, Seven, until the age of two and she was happy that she did it. She stated the following: "When I first had the baby, I was breastfeeding for two years straight, so we were together for two years of his life – every day, all hours of the day. So I was two people, and I eventually morphed back into one. Now he’s part of me. He’s very independent as a result of it. I thought it was going to be the opposite. I was very worried that he was going to be attached since we were together every day, but I guess it made him feel comfortable."

It is a beautiful sentiment, but the fact of the matter is that creating too much of a bond like that is not all that healthy. It can cause the child to become way too attached. At least he became independent, despite what she said.

4 Alicia Silverstone Breastfed For 11 Months

Alicia Silverstone, the former Clueless star, is a huge supporter of breastfeeding and even had herself photographed while she was nursing an 11-month-old Bear Blue while walking. There is nothing wrong with nursing a child of that age, but with her mentality, she was not going to stop anytime soon.

In her book Kind Mama, she stated quite boldly "Nurse like it's your destiny". She started the Kind Mama Milk Share program, which is a great cause because it allows mothers with a large supply of breast milk to share it with moms who are not able to nurse. This is all wonderful, and her heart was in the right place while she started this program.

The thing is, with this way of thinking, and with this kind of degree of passion, she will be nursing Bear until he is 5-years-old! Again, the line really has to be drawn somewhere.

3 Miranda Kerr Breastfed For 1.5 Years

Model mom Miranda Kerr was proud to let the world know that she had breastfed her son,  Flynn, for a year and a half. She made it very clear that her nursing experience was the most natural thing in the world, and she loved it. It was the bonding time they had which made these moments precious and beautiful.

That is beautiful and moms who love to breastfeed would feel the exact same way. Personally, since a year-and-a-half-old baby is really too old to still be drinking solely breast milk. She should have been giving him solids or mixing the milk with other foods. Kids at that age really do need to be weaned off. If she was nursing her son several times a day, and even during the night at a year-and-a-half like Kelly Preston did, then yeah it is time to start making some serious transitions.

2 Danica McKellar - 2.5 Years Of Breastmilk

Do you remember Winnie Cooper? Well, the former Wonder Years actress, Danica McKellar made it quite known that she loves and lives to breastfeed. She is incredibly proud of it. She nursed her son Draco until he was 2-and-a-half-years-old, and she has even told other moms to breastfeed as long as it works for both, them and their kids.

For the most part, that is great advice because you not only have to have the ability to breastfeed your babies, but you must enjoy doing it too, in order to stick with it. But she also said that moms should do it as long as they please, even if that means that they do it until their kids are 3-and-a-half-years-old! Breastfeeding over the age of 2 seems quite excessive, and many breastfeeding moms and advocates agree with that one.

1 Jamie Grumet Nursed Until Her Son Was 3

Do you remember that TIME Magazine cover that was published in May 2012, with the picture of Jamie Grumet nursing her 3-year-old son, which sparked a lot of controversies? What made it worse was that the question "Are You Mom Enough" was on there as well!

This had created plenty of criticism about her choice to breastfeed her son into toddlerhood, because of it being harmful to do that. In fact, it became so extreme to the point that Grumet actually began to get death threats, which was way too extreme! It is one thing to not agree with breastfeeding a child past the age of 2, but to receive death threats over it? Come on! That is just completely insane beyond words.

The reason Grumet wanted to be photographed while breastfeeding her son was to help break the stigma of extended breastfeeding. However, that goal was far from accomplished.
