Our favorite celebrities are so lucky to have their glam lifestyles, getting paid the big bucks to do what they’re most passionate about. But when you look at their pasts, most celebrities actually tell the same tales of getting bullied in school, humiliated, feeling alone… For some, the stories are even more tantalizing, with tales of poverty, their parents cheating, dropping out of school, etc.
They may seemingly have it all now, but growing up, many of these celebrities had nothing and have had to overcome huge obstacles to get where they are now. Others are lucky to still be alive as their fates had a 50/50 chance of including taking a life. One royal celebrity even had secret make-out sessions while in school…
Keep reading to find out 15 of the juiciest confessions from some of the top celebrities right now. Some confessions are quite surprising given the level of fame that the celebrities in question have since reached and others will have you raising your eyebrows in astonishment.
15 Liam Hemsworth – Tried To End His Brother's Life
Siblings fight all the time, but the Hemsworth brothers are beyond lucky things turned out the way they did. If they hadn't, one brother would be dead and the other would have most likely never gone on to land his breakout role in “The Last Song”.
Liam Hemsworth shared: “So one day when I was about five we had a fight in the kitchen about using the toaster, or something, and I picked up a kitchen knife and threw it at his head and the handle hit him in the forehead”.
Wow, talk about lucky! But don’t let their smiling pictures together fool you. Their younger brother, Luke Hemsworth, who has landed a main role in Westworld, has stated in an interview: “we have a healthy rivalry with everything that we do”.
14 Beyoncé – Called ‘Dumbo’
Who is the true queen of the music industry: Lady Gaga or Beyoncé? Either way, both are beautiful but what’s interesting is that Queen Bey wasn’t always noted for her beauty as she is now. Since she was deemed to have large ears as a child, her peers called her “Dumbo” and frequently taunted her for having ears that were “larger than her head”.
To make matters worse, her weight apparently got in the way of her popularity at school as well. Kids can certainly be unnecessarily cruel, but you can bet that she got the last laugh, especially as she steadily makes her way towards securing a billionaire status. On her own, Beyoncé’s net worth is $350 million, but combined with her husband Jay Z, it’s $610 million, which means that soon enough, they should have a combined net worth of $1 billion.
13 Chloe Grace Moretz – Her Dad Cheated On Her Mom
When she was just 12 years old, Chloe’s father left after cheating on her mom. She recalled:
“It was a pretty bad experience, it could have rocked our family and messed us up, but it actually made us a lot tighter. My brothers bumped up into the roles of fathers and kept me in a bubble where I could live in a world that wasn’t jaded and ruined”.
Her father’s sudden departure left her with a “slight case of PTSD”. She also shared: “It definitely affected me at a young age in terms of accepting people into my life on a personal level”.
Fortunately, she was able to find the strength to overcome what her father did to her family, going on to say: "I don't think I will truly find a way to forgive; the things that he did are unforgivable. My forgiveness is that I'm living my life."
12 Jennifer Lawrence – A High School Dropout
Most wouldn’t peg Jennifer Lawrence for a high school dropout. There’s no word as to whether she ever plans on getting her high school diploma, but at just 15 years old, she left high school to pursue an acting career. Her schooling, or lack thereof, is actually slightly confusing. In an interview with Vanity Fair, she revealed: “I didn’t go to high school. I am vastly uneducated”. When asked if she would ever go back to high school, she replied “Absolutely not”.
In an interview with Vogue though, she confessed that she left high at fifteen years old after being placed in therapy and getting “heavily medicated”. In that interview in particular she shared: “I was a weirdo. I’ve always just had this weird anxiety. I hated recess. I didn’t like field trips. Parties really stressed me out. And I had a very different sense of humor."
Fortunately, it’s that weird humor that has actually helped her quickly become a Hollywood favorite.
11 Lady Gaga – Taunted, Humiliated And Excluded
She may be the new Queen of Pop, following in the footsteps of Madonna and Michael Jackson, but life for Lady Gaga wasn’t always so peachy. She confessed that she was bullied in school and felt excluded. In her own words:
"Being teased for being ugly, having a big nose, being annoying. 'Your laugh is funny, you're weird, why do you always sing, why are you so into theater, why do you do your make-up like that?'"
Her mother also added: “She was creative and unequivocally her own person, but her peers didn’t always appreciate the things that made her unique—and different. As a result, they would sometimes taunt, humiliate, or exclude her. It was hurtful for her to experience and heartbreaking for me to watch”.
Fortunately, she was able to harness those feelings into her music and connect on a even deeper level with her Little Monsters.
10 Arnold Schwarzenegger – His Dad Thought He Was Gay
Nowadays, bodybuilding and fitness in general are all the rage, but back when Arnold was a teenager, keeping posters of famous bodybuilders had his parents thinking that there was something “wrong” with him.
“I don’t know if mum thought I was gay, or if she just thought there was something off and thought ‘let’s catch it early,” shared Arnold. He explained that his mother told the doctor: “All of Arnold’s friends have pictures of girls above their bed. And Arnold has no girls.”
Even more shocking about Arnold’s past is that his father would run after him and beat him with a belt because he thought he might be gay due to his “obsession” with bodybuilding and male bodybuilders in particular.
It’s a good thing he persevered with his passion though because otherwise he would have never gone on to become the killing machine in movies as well as the Governor of California.
9 Ariana Grande – Was Almost A...
Don’t be fooled by Ariana’s sizzling appearance and sweet-looking eyes because she might just suffocate you with her ponytail the moment you turn your back. Just kidding, but when she was a child, her own mother had concerns about her mental health.
Ariana recalled: “There was a stage, when I was three or four, where my mom thought I might grow up to be a serial killer”.
Quite shocking, but it wasn’t as grim as it might sound. She explained: “I always wanted to have skeleton face paint on or be wearing a Freddy Krueger mask, and I would carry a hockey stick around. I was like a mini-Helena Bonham Carter.”
When most children want Princess or Disney-themed birthday parties, she actually wanted a Jaws-themed birthday party when she was just five years old, to the point that all her friends were “left crying”.
8 Selena Gomez – Too Poor To Get Gas
Selena Gomez’s net worth has reached $50 million, but life wasn’t always so cushy for the young starlet. When she was young, money was quite tight for her family. She recalled: “I remember my mom would run out of gas all of the time and we’d sit there and have to go through the car and get quarters and help her get gas”.
She continued: “We did have to walk to the dollar store to get dollar spaghetti and make it … so we always had food but if I knew she wanted to go to a concert I would save up for it. You do the best you can with what you’re given”.
Not only that, but she also revealed that she was “bullied every second of every day in elementary and middle school”.
7 Kate Middleton – Frenching At Fourteen
Nearly every day, we’re bombarded on social media about Kate Middleton secretly visiting a hospital just like Princess Diana used to do or she was captured on camera doing something that any of us common folk parents would do, but her past is actually juicier than the Queen likely would have liked.
Back when she was 14 years old, Kate would wait for a fellow schoolmate, Woody Webster, to be done with this tennis matches. The pair would then sneak behind the school’s landmark named “Merlin’s Mound” to make-out.
Reportedly, it’s with him that Kate also shared her first ever kiss. This bit of gossip is particularly juicy because of how private the royal family is about the lives of its members. While the secret behind Kate’s make-out sessions has been revealed, it’s interesting to know that the royal family refuses to release the details surrounding how she got the scar on the side of her head. Some speculate it’s as a result of a childhood surgery, but it’s still peculiar that this information hasn’t been officially released.
6 Cara Delavigne – Couldn’t Stand Herself
Cara Delavigne is on the fast-track to super stardom. Since beginning her modelling career at the age of ten, she has gone on to walk the runway for all the major houses and has most recently also jumped into acting, landing major roles in Suicide Squad and Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.
Despite her successes, Cara has admitted in a tweet: “I suffer from depression and was a model during a particularly rough patch of self hatred”. She continued: “I couldn't just sit there and listen to these girls, and boys, too, but usually girls, say this stuff, about bullying, about their sexuality, depression, and guilt and suicidal thoughts and just all of it, without being like, 'I have been through that, and it's going to be okay.’”
She also added that “f*king being a teenager suuuccccks”. Maybe one day she will elaborate further on her childhood.
5 Zac Efron – Was A Nerd
With his chiseled looks and washboard abs, it’s hard to imagine Zac Efron as anything but a jock in high school, but as it turns out, he actually wasn’t.
In his own words: “I wasn’t a heartthrob at school; I was a geek, I was into musical theater, which isn’t perceived as the coolest thing. There were guys who were 6’ 1” with beards and big muscles and I was a gawky 17-year-old, a skinny, awkward kid. I was a late bloomer. Growing up was hell."
Pursuing music in school is a lot more “cool” nowadays, so perhaps his situation could have been different had he been born just a decade later. He also added: “Come on! ‘Seriously, I was the short kid in high school. I didn’t get much attention from the chicks. I was, like, 5ft 6in tall. But as soon as I left and started working, then I started to grow up a little bit.”
A “little bit” is quite the understatement…
4 Emilia Clarke – Her First Kiss Was In A Cupboard
Daenerys Stormborn of the House Targaryen, First of Her Name…. or you can just call her by her real name, Emilia Clarke! Emilia’s role as Daenerys on Game of Thrones has certainly been her breakout role, but although she portrays a fiery leader on the series who isn’t afraid to get naked, in real life, she’s a lot more modest.
In fact, she shared this memory of her first kiss:
“My first boy kiss was on spin the bottle and I thought I was being really demure because I didn’t want to kiss a boy in front of everyone. So I was like no, we’re going to go in the cupboard. So I kissed him in the cupboard because I thought that was like a classier choice. It wasn’t. He was cool”.
3 Leighton Meester – Mom Was On ‘Most Wanted List’
Gossip Girl’s narrative is nothing compared to Leighton Meister’s past. As it turns out, she was born in a prison, where her mother, Constance Meester, had been serving time for smuggling 1,200 pounds of marijuana from Jamaica into the United States. Her mother actually managed to escape and is the first woman to make it onto the United States Marshal’s 15 Most Wanted List.
But the drama in Leighton’s past didn’t end there. She has summarized her past as being “probably the craziest [she has] ever heard of”. A couple of years ago, when Gossip Girl was still in full swing, the Meesters made headlines again but this time because Leighton was suing her mom for custody of her brother, claiming that the money she sent for his medical bills had instead been spent on cosmetic surgery.
2 Channing Tatum – Was ‘Different' In School
Another actor whose appearance you shouldn’t let fool you? Channing Tatum. He may seem calm and collected in interviews, but growing up, he had a much tougher time.
Diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia, Channing shared: “You get lumped in classes with kids with autism and Down syndrome, and you look around and say, ‘Okay, so this is where I’m at.’ Or you get put in the typical classes and you say, ‘All right, I’m obviously not like these kids either.’ So you’re kind of nowhere. You’re just different. The system is broken. If we can streamline a multibillion-dollar company, we should be able to help kids who struggle the way I did.”
In fact, he has also been quoted saying: “I have never considered myself a very smart person, for a lot of reasons”. Luckily, it’s following his mom’s advice to “be a sponge” and learn from the people around him that helped Channing get to where he is now.
1 Taylor Swift – Wasn’t On The ‘List’
The mega pop star is certainly not without a great deal of controversies and gossip. Despite trying to portray in her “Look What You Made Me Do” video that both her reputation and the old Taylor are dead, there’s still no denying that the blonde star has made millions and has a pretty glam lifestyle as a result.
She may be the most popular now, but her younger years paint a different picture. She revealed: "I remember when I was in school, the whole reason I started writing songs was because I was alone a lot of the time. I'd sit there in school and I'd be hearing people like, 'Oh my god, this party that we're going to is gonna be so awesome on Friday. Everyone's invited except for [Taylor].”
Such a revelation is actually quite common among celebrities as most have revealed similar stories.
