Being a celebrity definitely requires these artists and entertainers to put on a public show. And yes, they are people too, so every once in a while they would slip up with their public façade and show a little bit of obnoxiousness or two. But hey, besides snarky attitudes and rudeness in public, what is the one other thing people love to hate? Fakery. That is right, folks, as much as people believe that being kind and not rude is something everyone should strive for, they also equally have a burning hatred for individuals who act all goody when in fact they harbour much more than that (a little bit more rude perhaps, or a little more snappy than they let on?). There really is a fine balance to be struck here.
In today’s version of “who do we love but also would love to hate?” we take a look at celebrity moms who like to project ‘super nice’ and ‘kind’ and ‘precious’ (and everyone seems to just gobble it all up), but really are sometimes faking the attitude. Or maybe celebrities that are mostly hella annoying but people just decided they love them anyway.
Maybe it’s for attention (duh, they’re celebrities!), or for fuel to their fame, or maybe even just survival in the Hollywood scene- because being forgotten is way worse than being hated. But hey, maybe we shouldn’t hate them forever or anything like that; after all, people can change, but it’s worth noting that sometimes, some acts are just really downright shitty.
Managing a full household and a fashion empire while in the limelight is no easy feat, we understand. Kris Jenner, the mother hen of the Kardashian clan and ex-wife of Caitlyn Jenner, is a Hollywood household name. Rising to fame due to reality show Keeping Up with the Kardashians, we have become witness to Kris’ amusing snarky attitude and her awesome managerial skills. What a woman to behold indeed.
But because she is so good at what she does, it can also get a little fake sometimes. After all, we can’t just expect a camera-shot “reality show” to portray everything as 100% real, right? Some of the mind-blowing “WTF” Kris moments are highlighted by the fact that the “iconic Californian house” was in fact not her house, but just one of two that was being used for shooting! However, the interior is most definitely Kris’, but the exterior is some other house located in a gated community. Talk about keeping up images! Buzz Bissinger, co-writer of Caitlyn’s memoir also accused Kris’ criticism of Caitlyn Jenner’s memoir as just a ploy to beef up ratings for her reality show. 'Kris, I don't know how to say this, she is full of s***, she is full of s***,' Bissinger said. Yikes.
The Academy award-winning Hollywood actress and mother of two is surely a talented artist and definitely a gorgeous woman. She could bring so much gravity to her roles on the big screen; in her private life, we know she’s a mother who loves to pour attention to her two children. However, Gwyneth can also be really pretentious and quite ridiculous, especially with her statements on lifestyle or anything organic: “I’d rather smoke crack than eat cheese from a tin”; um, okay girl, sure.
She’s very fond of outrageous statements such as “We’re human beings and the sun is the sun—how can it be bad for you? I don’t think anything that’s natural can be bad for you” (what ever?!), and also recommending controversial lifestyle habits, such as “vaginal steaming” which may have more harms than actual good, or resurrecting the debunked old myth of the link between breast cancer and wearing bras. Even a gynecologist wrote an open letter to her, lambasting her website for suggesting to readers to put Jade stone eggs in their vaginas.
Reese Witherspoon is just one of Hollywood’s sweethearts that everyone seems to adore. She’s beautiful (and so is her daughter, who looks almost exactly like her), she’s talented (all those Academy and Golden Globe Awards didn’t earn themselves!), and she’s absolutely charming. Her role as June Carter in Walk the Line is surely an unforgettable one.
But Reese can also become a little bit of a prick, under certain circumstances. In her and her husband’s arrest around 2013, where he was arrested for driving under the influence and she disorderly conduct, she was caught saying to the police officer (besides also telling him she was pregnant, even if she wasn’t!) "Do you know my name? You're about to find out who I am,” because clearly everyone should know who Reese Witherspoon is. On the bright side, it looks like Reese had shown remorse about her past actions, saying she made a mistake and apologized outright for it. "I had no idea what I was talking about and I am so sorry. I was so disrespectful to him,” she stated in an interview. Mud co-star Matthew McConaughey even praised her for tackling the issue outright. Well, it looks like people do change after all, but we can’t help wrinkling our noses at how Reese acted that night.
To lambast Beyonce is to commit blasphemy or treason; at least, that’s what Queen Bey’s huge fan base makes us feel! Beyonce is the icon of many, many people, treating her image as perfection (have you seen her recent pregnancy photos? Jaw-dropping!) and her presence as a goddess walking the scorned earth. No doubt, Beyonce is gorgeous and fiercely talented, and her lifestyle envious (look at all those Grammy’s!), but Beyonce can also seem a little too perfect sometimes.
Perhaps Beyonce can be a little self-centered. In an Atlantic article, Esther Zuckerman criticizes how Beyonce’s documentary “Life is a But a Dream”, which claims to be an insight into the Beyonce in real life, is really just another polished, narcissistic rendition of the artist’s view of her life (a Beyonce documentary co-directed by Beyonce, that must tell us something). Her backstage scenes showed crew members (often going unnamed) who are portrayed as “at odds with her vision for the stage act”. When Buzzfeed published an article showing how “fierce” she was dancing at a Superbowl show, her publicist wanted them to be taken down because they were “unflattering”’. Uh huh, pretty authentic.
Mila Kunis, That 70’s Show and Jupiter Ascending star seem to be the tomboyish, cool, girl-next door everyone wants to be friends with. She takes no shit, she’s not here to appease to everybody (according to her interview with Marie Claire), and she shows that celebrities are just like us too- goofy and normal and sometimes sour. She and hubby Ashton Kutcher are downright adorable (a dream come true for the pairing’s fans since That 70’s Show).
But sometimes it appears her “cool” demeanor really is also part of a much cooler- and by this, we mean icy- attitude. According to Style Blazer Mila once showed up to an interview late and said “make this 10 minutes,” to the interviewers! Stephen Witty, a writer for NJ, recalled their awkward interview where most of his questions, 25 minutes into the interview, seemed “to strike her as either dull, insulting or burdened by some sort of agenda”. It also doesn’t help that they started off the discussion with a snappy “I don’t talk about that for publication” when he opened it with a “how are you feeling?”
Katherine Heigl is an actress and model best known for her roles in Knocked Up and Dr. Isobel Stevens on Grey’s Anatomy, for which she could have won an Emmy (more on this later!). She was nominated for her work on Grey in the Golden Globes, she’s the lead role in TV legal drama Doubt, and she seems to be also busy with charity work, such as being the spokesperson for Donate Life America, being a strong proponent of organ donation. Katherine seems to be juggling professional and personal life quite well.
But she’s also known to be a little difficult. One of her biggest “WTF” moments is when she withdrew her name from the 2008 Emmy’s list, and appeared to have “slighted” the creator Shonda Rhimes, when she commented that “I did not feel that I was given material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination, and in an effort to maintain the integrity of the academy organization, I withdrew my name from contention.” Well, that’s definitely something diva.
Wonder Woman of our time, it seems like anything Gal graces with her beautiful face and charming laugh gets blessed with #empowering awesomeness. She’s gorgeous, she’s strong (she worked as a soldier before), and she’s also a really lovely mother to her kid. How much more perfect can she be?
Well, perfection also comes with a price. Gadot has received much backlash after posting her support for the Israeli forces, being labeled a Zionist and being called out to be opposite what her character Diana stands for. There is a terrible conflict between Israel and Palestine, and often reported are war crimes done against Palestinians; given this, blogger Tharushi Hett wrote in her post: "How can you praise the new Wonder Woman movie when she is being played by someone who condones the horrible crimes committed by Israel for years?” It is up to you, dear reader, to decide whether Gal is really a Wonder Woman after all.
Jennifer Lopez AKA J.Lo is a smokin’ hot momma, a fashion designer, actress, and singer icon. It seems like she has it all! She gained success and fame with the simultaneous release of her album J.Lo and her film The Wedding Planner. She was also an American Idol judge, which surely indicated her spot in the list of names of Hollywood A-listers. Her impact on cultural barriers in the US music industry is also immense, given her Hispanic background. She is also involved in various charity works, such as the Lopez Family Foundation.
J Lo can also have a bit of a bitch streak. In an E! Online report, J Lo apparently was all “attitude-like” when interacting with a salesclerk in a high-end boutique. Upon being asked what she was looking for, J Lo hissed only “the best”; after browsing through a selection of bathing suits, throwing them at the clerk, going into the dressing room and storming angrily out of it after, she did not buy anything from the store! There were even reports from The Richest that J Lo refuses to converse with “common folk”, instead of turning to her assistants to relay the message. Talk about attitude!
Mariah Carey is very well known in the Hollywood scene. One of the more iconic female singers out there- she can hit those Mariah high notes effortlessly- she made a claim to fame with her song “Vision of Love” from her album Mariah Carey, which also contained other chart-topping singles. She’s a staple during Christmas, what with her entire Christmas album. She was ranked second in the VH1 list of "100 Greatest Women in Music." She is truly iconic.
Mariah, however, is also apparently known for being a diva (and no, not the music diva); as in, a very demanding, somewhat unprofessional diva, according to some reports. For example, she missed out on a cameo role in Will Ferrell’s The House because she showed up late, refused to participate in her scene ("'Darling, I would never do it that way…' Cedric Yarbrough, an actor with a small role in the film, said he heard her say), and was “unprofessional and borderline abusive” to the director.
Sandra Bullock is also one of Hollywood’s long-time Sweethearts. She is a loving mother in The Blind Side, a hilarious executive in The Proposal, and a gorgeous but powerful agent in Miss Congeniality. She is a very well-known name in the acting industry, and she was one of the highest-paid actresses in 2007. She was also named “Most Beautiful Woman” in 2015 by People magazine. Talent, looks, fame, and fortune- Sandra Bullock definitely has it all.
But it appears that Sandra may not be as ‘congenial’ as she is in her film. In a Star Magazine, article Denise Kodes tells the story of how she had a run-in with the Sandra while she was out with her veteran husband who was on a wheelchair. “She covered her face and yelled. He just wanted an autograph, and she actually yelled at him!” the woman said when recounting that her husband wanted an autograph; and while we agree that sometimes mobs of fans asking for autographs can be weary and irksome, just one old veteran surely isn’t that big of a problem? In Food World News, it was also reported that she was donning a diva attitude during the Toronto Film Festival, treating staff “infelicitously”. Looks like Ms. Bullock needs more congeniality lessons.
Julia Roberts is not only a “Pretty Woman” (he he), but she also appears to be charming, compassionate, and elegant too. The A-list actress is a Hollywood household name, earning numerous Golden Globe Awards and Academy Awards, which shows she’s a talented actress indeed. She also donates to charity, such as UNICEF, for instance. Everyone can’t seem to get enough of her lovely lady-like manner and elegant charm. But is she really just the Pretty Woman she is portrayed to be?
It seems like Julia also has a tendency to be a diva. For example, according to CeleBitchy, she had a meltdown in a private plane trip from LA to New York, where she threw a pillow after shouting snarls at the attendant that that was not the kind of pillow she asked for. She was also reported to have bitched that Meryl Streep, her co-star in August: Osage Country, had a better trailer than her and demanded a new one! Even Steven Spielberg, when asked if he’d work with Julia again, answered in the negative.
Hilary Duff may just be the epitome of “America’s Sweetheart”. She was a Disney star, starring in numerous titles such as Lizzie McGuire and Cadet Kelly. She is also a singer, and proved to be a successful one: her 2003 album Metamorphosis topped the US Billboard 200 and earned her critical and commercial success. And who could forget her awkwardly adorable “You’re watching Disney Channel” wand-waving outtakes? She’s also a proud mother now, and her pictures with her kid are just charming. Clearly, Hilary’s life is a picture well painted.
Hilary can also be really difficult. She was lambasted for posing in a modified version of a Pilgrim’s outfit (where the bottom half is just really her legs covered in nude stockings), with her boyfriend donning a Native-American “costume” during Halloween, where people criticized her for being “insensitive” and “ignorant”. Richard Lawson, for Gawker, also wrote how one night a drunken Hilary decided to imitate him from the next table while he tells a story to his lady-friend, and when he pointedly acknowledged this she “transformed from the likes of Daisy Duck to Magica De Spell” and started yelling and shouting that he was ruining her dinner with her friends. Whew.
Who could forget Christina Aguilera? She’s a coach on The Voice, an actress, and a pop icon. Known for her song “Reflection” from Mulan, her Billboard Hot 100 album Christina Aguilera, and her collaborations such as “Moves Like Jagger” with Maroon 5, she surely has made a mark in the Hollywood music industry. Any nineties kid can tell you that Christina Aguilera is simply a household name, a “Pop Princess”if you will.
What others will also tell you, however, is that Christina also has a mean streak. From The Talko, it was reported that Valerie Bertinelli ran into her and showered her with compliments, but Christina merely interrupted with a “yeah whatever”. She even apparently picked a fight with a Disney character! That’s right: on her 34th birthday celebration, which was spent in the Disney theme park, she and friends wanted to take a picture with the Mickey Mouse mascot (who was on a break, so she had to wait); she didn’t like this and called the Mouse an a-hole and said “Do you know who I am?”
Kim Kardashian is everywhere. On the TV, in the newspapers, in online celebrity gossip websites- it seems like the world just can’t get enough of Kim K. Though she gained infamy for appearing in a sex tape, Kim has built her business empire with her family. Now she runs a successful beauty/fashion line, is the star of a long-running reality show Keeping Up with the Kardashians, and is married to fellow celebrity Kanye West, with whom she has beautiful children. It’s like Kim K’s life is really on a bed of roses now.
But it looks like Kim K herself isn’t all roses and peaches. Although people can’t seem to ignore her and just adore her, she’s also quite a difficult diva, according to some reports. From The Richest article, her ex Kris Humphries says that he has voicemails from her where she says that her fans are “pathetic” and “gullible”. That’s not very nice!
Natalie Portman may just be the ultimate Girl Next Door. Sweet, classy, and charming, she is the icon of awesomeness that everyone would love to hang out with. Known for her iconic roles in V for Vendetta, Star Wars and Black Swan, Natalie is a well-loved Hollywood household name. She’s also incredibly gorgeous, and she looked positively glowing in her violet gown at the 83rd Oscars, where she won the coveted award for Best Actress. Talented and beautiful, this woman is. However, even the best of actresses falter sometimes.
According to reports, Portman, producer of Jane Got a Gun, was being a “stuck-up control freak”. Apparently, her temper, which everyone seemed afraid of, was due to A-list leading men backing out of the project (first it was Michael Fassbender, and then Jude Law), which she was “taking out on everyone”. Another source says that she allegedly showed up moments before a screening of her film Jackie ended, and refused to acknowledge fans. Is she really mean-spirited? Or maybe she was just having a bad day or two? We wouldn’t know for sure, but her reported temper tantrums don’t sound very nice.
