These throwback photos of celebrity moms are so fun! It’s cool to look back and see the evolution of maternity styles through the years. They may look silly or strange to us know but back in their day, these famous women were trend setters for pregnant women everywhere. Their cutting edge looks reflected how society viewed moms-to-be at that point in time.

From the disco and flower-child looks of the 1970’s to the form fitting gowns we began seeing on the red carpet in the 1990’s, these outfits were all the rage. The 1980’s saw a moment in history when women were joining the work force in droves so maternity fashion was masculine with shoulder pads and over-sized dresses.

Women didn’t go for the modern look until things took a turn in the 1990’s and it became fashionable to show off your baby bump. Women started wearing form fitting clothes and we never looked back. The red carpet was filled with pregnant ladies in cocktail dresses and skin tight silhouettes. Gone were the days of covering up your curves.

These iconic women are more mature now and most of their children have grown into adults. They were the torch bearers for this generation and paved the way for the anything goes maternity looks that we see today. Some of these images may seem outdated but you never know when fashion will swing back around again. Here is a list of 15 older celebs and their throwback pics. Who knows, maybe you’ll find some inspiration.

15 Cindy Lauper - Flaunted Her Bump

Cindy Lauper was extremely pregnant with her son, Dex Lauper, when she dressed up for Halloween. The pop star went as a belly dancer and attended a 1997 Halloween party at Howard Kaplan Antiques in New York City. This photograph is so fantastic. I love that she unabashedly put her round belly on display. She looks so proud to flaunt her stuff in the revealing costume.

I especially love the charm in her bellybutton. Not only is she calling attention to her baby bump but she’s being really playful about it. She isn’t fazed by the fact that her stomach is covered with a linea nigra, or the faint line that can run from an expectant mom’s belly button to her pubic area. This is definitely how a mom-to-be should rock her costume on Halloween. Lauper doesn’t seem to care that she looks like a gypsy that swallowed a watermelon.

14 Cher - Flower Child

Cher had a tumultuous relationship with Country crooner, Greg Allman. Despite their volatile marriage, she carried his child in 1976. Here we see Cher a few months pregnant with their son, Elijah Blue. She is the epitome of a 1970’s mom-to-be in this pic. From the floppy hat covered in calico material, to her flower child maternity dress, that long black hair, and those big earrings, Cher certainly did pregnancy in style.

Unfortunately, the romance didn’t last long and the couple divorced soon after Elijah Blue was born. Allman had a history of drug and alcohol abuse and the famous duo tried on and off for years to make it work. Even though the marriage didn’t last, we will forever have this image of a pregnant Cher in some seriously stylish maternity threads. Fashion was pretty funky in the 1970’s and this photo proves that maternity fashion was no different.

13 Kim Basinger - Nailed The Hipster Frump

Kim Basinger was well known for being a glamorous actress when she was in her prime. So, it’s a bit shocking to see that she wore overalls when she was pregnant with her daughter, Ireland Baldwin. The year was 1995 and she was married to Alec Baldwin at the time. Maternity fashion took a shift in 1990’s to be more bump friendly and even a bit more professional looking since so many women had joined the work force.

It seems like Basinger didn’t get the memo. She looks a bit frumpy and those overalls were stretched to capacity. Perhaps she had reached that point that almost every woman reaches when she becomes hugely pregnant and pretty much dressed for comfort. It’s actually kind of refreshing to see a celebrity mom-to-be looking casual instead of squeezing herself into a tight little dress. Basinger seems born to down earth in this get up.

12 Meryl Streep - Glorious In Gold

Let’s flashback to the year 1983, shall we? Meryl Streep was six months pregnant with her second child when she won an Academy Award for her role in the film, Sophie’s Choice. The world was falling in love with Streep and she was the epitome of glam when she accepted the Oscar for best actress. Streep wore a gold Christian Leigh gown that was elegant and feminine. This was her third Oscar win and she accepted the golden statue in high fashion.

Maternity fashion in the 1980’s consisted mostly of baggy dresses so this sequined gown was a fancier version of what most expectant moms wore. Designers were still totally attempting to camouflage a baby bump instead of accentuating a pregnant belly. The billowy dress was very popular at the time. Streep rocked the red carpet in her gown and gave birth to her daughter, Mamie Gummer, later that year.

11 Susan Sarandon - Revealing In Velvet

Actress Susan Sarandon was nominated for an Academy Award in 1992 for her role in the feminist ladies-on the run film, Thelma and Louise. Although she didn’t take the Oscar home that night, she certainly sparkled on the red carpet in this snazzy maternity gown. She flaunted her two best assets in that cleavage revealing velvet smock. The bedazzled jewels along the trim of the top were quintessential 1990’s style. It was very popular for clothes to feature ornate details. The long black skirt was sophisticated and slimming.

Sarandon attended the event with her then long-time boyfriend, Tim Robbins. The power couple welcomed their son, Miles, only 5 weeks after this photo was taken. The two have since broken up but they will always remember their glamorous walk down the red carpet together. Their union may not have lasted but the image of a pregnant Sarandon will live on forever.

10 Glenn Close - Seriously On-Trend

Another super famous pregnant mom that ruled the Academy Awards was actress, Glen Close. She was nominated for her role at the scary mistress gone crazy in the chilling film, Fatal Attraction. The year was 1988 and she wore this form fitting, shimmery maternity gown with style. This look is like, totally 80’s. From the shoulder pads to the draping fabric over her baby bump, her outfit was on-trend, for sure. The funny thing is, this look is back in style. I could see a millennial mom-to-be wearing this dress.

She lost to Cher that night, who took home the award for her role on Moonstruck. Yet, she had quite the consolation prize when she gave birth to her daughter, Annie, two weeks later. She looked amazing considering she was about to pop. Close has been nominated for an Oscar six times and never managed to win the golden statue.

9 Elle Macpherson - Little Black (Bump) Dress

Supermodel Elle Macpherson was a hotty with a body in this 1997 photograph. The glamorous model was pregnant with her son, Flynn Busson. Her barely there baby bump was on full display in this skin tight black dress with a sheer back. Maternity fashion took a turn in the 1990’s and women were wearing clothes that showed off their bellies instead of trying to cover them up. They squeezed into tight fitting threads that emphasized their growing shape.

So, Macpherson was totally trendy when she wore this look to an event. The black feather boa added a dramatic flare. This look celebrated her curvy body and set the stage for moms-to-be to stop hiding underneath folds of fabric. She claimed her sexiness in all of her pregnant glory. Why cover up when you’re that beautiful. She later gave birth to another son and was even rumored to be expecting at the age of 51!

8 Kris Jenner - Fresh Faced

Let’s take a walk down memory lane, to a time when Bruce Jenner was still a man and Kris Jenner was pregnant with her youngest child, Kylie. Here we have the couple arriving at an event in Los Angeles in 1997. Kris looks more natural in this photograph than she does now. The mom of six has had many cosmetic procedures done, so it’s lovely to see her looking so fresh faced.

The power duo look so happy and in love in this pic that it’s hard to believe that they are the same couple that we watched go through a nasty divorce on the reality show, Keeping Up with the Kardashians. Kris is wearing a nondescript and modest maternity gown that she wouldn’t be caught dead in now. Yet, these two were super hip in the late 1990’s. Her jewelry is surprisingly simple, considering how she is often dripping with diamonds these days.

7 Pamela Anderson - Infamous Coupling

Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson were rock and roll royalty in the year 1996. The couple met in 1995 and were married less than a week after they met. They were soon expecting their first son. Pamela was pregnant with Brandon Thomas Lee. This snap is of Tommy Lee rubbing her baby bump during the 23rd Annual American Music Awards in 1996.

I have to admit that she hardly even looks pregnant in that barely there silver dress. I’m not sure if the glitter reflecting on her face or not but Pamela had a pregnancy glow, for sure. The duo had another son named Dylan Lee together a year later. Unfortunatly, their marriage didn’t last but they sure do seem like they were crazy for each other in this photo. Their two sons grew up to be quite handsome. With parents this good looking, it’s no wonder that Dylan is a professional model.

6 Madonna - Like A Virgin?

This throwback pic of a pregnant Madonna proves that the material girl needed a bit more material to cover that baby bump. She was expecting her son Rocco in 1999 and stepped out in a cropped top with a British flag printed on it. Madonna was 41-years-old at the time and by the looks of it, pretty much didn’t care who saw her belly. She looks super comfy in a pair of cargo pants and proves that despite her celebrity status, she is just like every other pregnant woman. We all reach that stage where we just go limp and let it all hang out.

She married Guy Richie in the year 2000, after Rocco was born. The two divorced eight years later and ended up embroiled in a very public custody dispute of their son. She has also adopted four children from Malawi and is mom to her first daughter, Lourdes.

5 Jada Pinkett Smith - Matrix Maternity Vibes

Jada Pickett Smith’s bleached blond buzz cut is everything in this photograph from the 1998 Billboard Awards red carpet. Jada was there to support her husband, Will Smith, who won for best supporting actor for his role in Men In Black. She flaunted her baby bump during her first pregnancy and gave birth to their son, Jadon in July of that year.

At the time that this snap was taken, their matching metallic outfits were all the rage. It’s sort of got a Matrix meets maternity vibe going. Jada and Will were in the prime of their careers and just starting out their life together. The couple later welcomed their daughter Willow in the world. They are the epitome of a cool Hollywood family. It’s pretty fun to look back and see them looking so youthful and excited about their future together. The power duo are still going strong almost 20 years later.

4 Sarah Jessica Parker - Baby In The City

Sarah Jessica Parker channeled her inner Carrie Bradshaw when she wore a baby doll maternity dress. She was pregnant with her son James in 2002 and showed off her curves in this super flattering empire waste cocktail dress. Parker was on top of the world at the Sex In The City’s season 5 premiere. The television show was wildly popular and known for showcasing high fashion looks. So, this cute cocktail dress was perfect for the occasion. The skirt has just the right amount of swing to be flattering and playful.

She totally lived up to all the expectations her adoring fans and looked flawless for the duration of her pregnancy. Ever the trend setter, Parker inspired pregnant women everywhere to slip into ultra slimming empire waist dresses. It’s a classic look that stands the test of time. Her and husband Matthew Broderick later a set of twin daughters via surrogate.

3 Vanessa Williams  - So Extra In This 80s Look

Vanessa Williams is so extra in this totally tubular 1988 maternity look. At the time she was pregnant with her first daughter Jillian Hervey and this look was all the rage. From the teased out bangs to the over-sized cardigan, her outfit was on point. Williams was blowing up the music scene with her hit song, The Right Stuff and was pretty much a media darling. Maternity looks were loose and baggy at the time. Pregnant women were often seen in billowing shirt dresses so this outfit was pretty cutting edge at the time. The red tights were a nice touch, if you ask me.

Williams went on to give birth to 3 more children, two daughters and a son. The sexy mama grew into a very sophisticated woman but we’ll always have this photograph documenting her frumpy sweater. Her later pregnancies were spent in glamorous and form fitting clothes.

2 Carly Simon - Funk And Fur Of The 70s

Songstress Carly Simon was super funky in this 1970 pregnancy pic. I absolutely love the maternity look that she had going on. From the billowy dress to her fur coat, she was the epitome of rock and roll fashion. Simon was a very popular singer the time who had hit songs topping the charts so this over the top outfit suited her just fine. She gave birth to her daughter later that year and eventually went on to have another son.

Perhaps the craziest part of this get up was the champagne glass in her hand. It hearkens back to a time when people were a bit more lax about the effects of alcohol on a growing fetus. There is no way a expectant celebrity mom would be caught dead in a pic like this. They would be shamed to no end. Yet, Simon looks absolutely effortless in the photograph.

1 Demi Moore - 91' Cover Controversy

Who could forget this iconic photo of Demi Moore on the cover of Vanity Fair Magazine? She posed nude on the August 1991 cover and caused quite the controversy. Moore was seven months pregnant with her oldest daughter, Scout, when she bore it all for photographer, Annie Leibovitz. With her buns on display and her hand strategically placed to cover her breasts, Moore’s pregnant belly became a work of art.

Everyone was forced to get over how big she looked and Moore challenged society to accept her round body. The image instantly became a symbol of female empowerment and many women felt that it was brave statement. Moore paved the way for other women to let it all hang out . Many expectant celebrity moms have tried to recreate this photo, from Britney Spears to Brooke Shields. Yet, this snap was considered super racy and groundbreaking at the time.
