Pregnancy is that beautiful time—when everyone is supposed to pamper Mom, comment on her healthy glow and worship at her fertile feet. It is the happiest time in a woman’s life.
Of course, that never happens. Instead, the pregnancy shaming begins. Whether it is an internet troll on your Instagram or a cranky woman in line at the grocery store, the insults are constant.
Pregnant women are already in a period of uncertainty. Their bodies are changing. Their bumps are growing. And everyone has their own (unsolicited) advice on how moms-to-be should dress, eat, delivery, work and eat. Add to this all the fears that come with pregnancy, delivery, and motherhood and you have a stressed out and angry pregnant woman who should be experiencing the happiest moment of their lives but instead are fodder for insults and opinions.
From body-shaming to questioning work and wardrobe choices, pregnant women are the constant victims of endless insults, judgments and trash talk.
But some moms-to-be are not taking the pregnancy shaming anymore. These moms-to-be used their spotlight to turn the table on their haters. Check out our list of 15 pregnant women who got the flack, but totally fired back:
15 Beyonce—Queen Bey Rules
Then when Beyonce, who was pregnant with twins with husband Jay Z, released another pregnancy picture in a form fitting red dress, the trolls picked up their fat shaming pitch forks.
Tweets included: “Damn bruh Beyoncé's getting f**** fat!” and then memes surfaced of a pregnant Beyonce with captions like “I just finished eating another piece of pie”
How did Beyonce respond? Queen Bey did not even have to lift a finger. Fans everywhere shamed the fat-shaming trolls right back, keeping the Queen on her rightful throne.
“So people are saying Beyonce is fat for being pregnant with twins... The word idiot come to mind,” one fan tweeted.
“Are we really going to fat shame Beyoncé?? she has two humans inside her rn???” another fan shared.
That is why Bey rules the roost. Keep ruling, Queen Bey!
14 Kim Kardashian—Raising Awareness In the Face of Criticism
The Kardashians are always in the headlines for simply being Kardashians! During Kim’s first pregnancy the coverage moved from being a Kardashian to being unable to stop eating. Photos of Kim licking ice cream cones with headlines like “I can’t stop eating,” “Dumped at 200lbs” and “Kim’s 200lb nightmare.” Articles detailed her alleged eating habits and husband Kanye West’s supposed betrayal with hot blondes.
However, Kim suffered from preeclampsia, a condition of pregnancy that causes high blood pressure, massive water weight gain, swelling and can be deadly to mother and child. Her first child, North West was born 6 weeks early. Tabloids continued during Kim’s second pregnancy to bash her weight, even after she announced she had preeclampsia a second time!
The gorgeous mom-to-be did not take the body shaming. Kim fired back sharing the facts of preeclampsia on her blog—raising awareness of a very scary condition that can kill pregnant mothers. She also fired back in the best way possible: Kim looks amazing and is the mother of two healthy children. Rumor has it that baby number 3, is on the way using a surrogate to protect Kim’s health.
13 Kate Middleton--Giving A Royal Response
Even here in the States, we have a second obsession with the British monarchy. Afterall, there is a real, live Princess living out even little girl’s fantasy as the mother to the future British Monarch. Naturally thin Kate Middleton’s weight is the constant source of internet gossip, but not because she is overweight. Quite the opposite, The Duchess of Cambridge is often accused of being too thin and suffering from the eating disorders bulimia and anorexia.
In 2013, during her first pregnancy, the Duchess was accused of an eating disorder while pregnant. Headlines like “Is Kate Too Thin to be Pregnant?” accused the Duchess of being too sick to carry a baby.
The rumors swirled. Kate was forced to cancel all appearances as she battled a rare and horrific pregnancy disorder called hyperemesis gravidarum. While many women experience morning sickness, women with hyperemesis gravidarum have severe vomiting and nausea that won’t stop. This constant sickness can lead to dehydration, electrolyte imbalance and endanger the pregnancy.
Kate’s response to the rumors was very royal. She went home to her parents, rested and took care of herself until giving birth to the future King of England.
12 Porsche Thomas--Battles Back After Bump Bullying
Porsche Thomas, whose father Peter Thomas is a regular on the Real Housewives of Atlanta, is no stranger to vicious attacks that are lobbed at reality TV stars. However, she never thought she’d be the victim of bump bullying. Porsche, who welcomed twin boys in January, was harassed on Instagram for the color of her bump!
Trolls took to Instagram insulting, bullying and raging against her bump, telling her to “hide that nasty thing.”
Instead of defending her bump color, Porsche told the haters what they could do if their angry energy:
"While some of y'all been in my comments criticizing the Blackness that is my belly and me during what shoulda been your holiday cheer, I been over here enjoying life, growing tiny humans, performing miracles, and hopefully getting even Blacker,” Porsche wrote on Instagram.
Porsche also pointed out that the media does not often portray black pregnancy woman and she is tired of all the negativity on social media.
In an interview with BET, Porsche said:
"What purpose does it serve to share a negative thought with a person you don't know and, on top of that, to be a pregnant woman? What do they gain from it?"
11 Lauren Warren—Down With Vicious Voicemails
Lauren Warren is a TV news reporter from Augusta, Georgia. Everyday, Lauren goes on TV to give local viewers the news they need. Her growing bump (which we think is gorgeous by the way) led one viewer to leave her a nasty voicemail:
"Please go to Target and buy some decent maternity clothes so you don't walk around looking like you got a watermelon strapped under your too tight outfits. Target's got a great line of maternity clothes in case you've never heard of such a thing. You're getting to where you're being disgusting on the TV."
Lauren was so traumatized that she went back and began reviewing her previous fashion choices to find out which was offensive. Of course, none were of course and Lauren took to her blog to shut down the insults once and for all. She wrote:
“So, I think instead of letting this lady get me down, I'm just going to turn her negative energy into positive energy. I'm going to say as many nice things as I can to as many people as I can, and I'm going to do it in a dress that fits these beautiful new curves with my 'watermelon' stomach showing. “
10 Marissa Mayer—Yes to work and No to Maternity Leave
Internet dropped its jaw when then-Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer announced she would only take 3 weeks maternity leave. Mayer, who has a degree from Stanford University, was just 37 when she was appointed CEO of Yahoo, making her the 20th female CEO of a fortune 500 company.
Haters took to the internet to proclaim this move as detrimental to the movement for more paid maternity leave. Others claimed that Mayer would never be able to turn Yahoo! around now that she was about to be a mother. (You know, obviously, pregnancy negates all the education and experience she had). And even more, at the time Mayer announced her maternity leave plans she also endorsed a ban on telecommuting at home for employees.
But all of that changed when Mayer spent the last weeks of her pregnancy working from home and then, when returning to work, built a “Mother’s Room” next to her office. Mayer fired back with a change of perspective and later went on to lengthen maternity leave time and offer parents a paid bonus.
9 Demi Moore—Landmark Bump Photo
In 1991, the pregnant body was something to be hidden. There were no celebrity bump photos. No Hollywood reporters were issuing “bump watch” reports on the hottest stars. Pregnancy was a bit of a grotesque state and one that took away all sex appeal.
But then Demi Moore posed for a naked bump photo for the cover of Vanity Fair and changed everything. Gone were the days of hiding the bump. Gone were the mu-mus and frumpy maternity dresses. Demi made the bump hot. She made the pregnant body iconic. Just take a look:
Of course, Demi got her own dose of pre-internet trolling. Media outlets and people everywhere scoffed at her belly baring picture. But the beauty of Demi and her gorgeous baby-to-be inspired everyone to change the way they thought about the pregnant body. After Demi’s famous cover, other celebrities including Serena Williams and Natalie Portman posed for their own Vanity Fair pregnancy photos, paying homage to the landmark bravery of one really hot pregnant lady.
8 Jessica Simpson-Got Her Body Back
Weight gain is the most common side effect of pregnancy--and it is for good reason. Babies need more calories to grow in the womb and later new moms use those extra calories to breast feed.
But, these natural facts don't stop the fat haters from attacking expecting moms.
When Jessica Simpson was pregnant with her second child the Internet took its soapbox—saying that the former pop star and now clothing mogul “really looked like she took eating for two to heart.”
Jessica fought back, telling Redbook:
“I never listen to it, no matter who the press talks about when they’re pregnant. It’s ridiculous and unfair. I think any woman who is pregnant and creating a life is pretty much entitled to eat whatever she wants as long as she’s healthy. I wasn’t going to let the media take away from what was one of the happiest times in my life.”
She also worked to lose the pregnancy weight in a healthy way with breastfeeding, diet, exercise and a multi-million dollar contract with Weight Watchers. And continued to speak out against the cruel bullying she experienced during what should have been the happiest time of her life.
Take that, trolls.
7 Alyssa Milano—She’s the Boss
Actress and Mother Alyssa Milano was all aglow when pregnant in 2014. That is until comedian Jay Mohr began making comments about her body.
““She’s very tiny, in height . It seems like she had had a baby and said, ‘I don’t really give a s–––’ “ said the comedian. He went on to suggest she wear spanx!
Alyssa immediately responded on Twitter: “So sorry you felt the need to publicly fat-shame me. Be well and God Bless. Please send my love to your beautiful wife,”
Fans everywhere tweeted their support of Alyssa—proving that the world does not hate a pregnant woman. Classy and calm Alyssa drew a genuine apology out of Mohr, who took to twitter and his blog.
““She’s stunning. I mistakenly thought the absurdity of what I was saying would have been taken as a joke. #fail,” he tweeted.
Alyssa immediately forgave him and went back to enjoying the happiest time of her life.
You're the boss, Alyssa!
6 Chelsea Clinton—Battling Pregnancy Politics
Imagine the world’s shock that a pregnant woman could also travel and work on a political campaign! Chelsea Clinton took to her mother’s side and headed out on the campaign trail while pregnant.
Now imagine, the shock of woman everywhere when political opponents theorized that Chelsea, who was expecting her second child, got pregnant to help her mother win the presidency.
““Can we talk about the human drama that is Grandma Clinton? I don’t want to be cynical--I am not suggesting anyone’s having a baby for election purposes, but I think this—no, no--I’m just saying,” said New York Times financial columnist Andrew Ross Sorkin while on MSNC. Sorkin theorized that a grand baby would soften the image of Hillary Clinton and score her the top job in the land.
Chelsea, who was brutally bullied and mocked in the pre-social media days during her father’s presidency, stayed on the campaign trail. And she stayed strong by her mother’s side when Hillary lost the election to Donald Trump.
Shaking it off without missing a step is the best revenge!
5 Serena Williams—Grand Slam and Pregnant
When Serena Williams announced she was 20 weeks pregnant, right after hitting a grand slam to win the Australian Open, the world was shocked.
Especially her coach, Patrick who could not believe she kept the news from him.
“"Not at all and I'm angry she didn't tell me. I think she was herself so surprised, she didn't expect it. I think she kind of panicked like wow, I mean it's crazy to be ready to play a major and find out that you're pregnant a few days before. So I think she thought, 'Okay let's not say anything and pretend I'm not and see what's happening' – and she won the tournament.” Patrick told Good Morning Britain.
It was as if the world could not actually believe it was humanly possible for a pregnant woman to hit a tennis ball while gestating a baby. Serena, who is expecting her first baby with fiancé Alexis Ohanian this fall, fired back with the best tool she has: tennis. Throughout her pregnancy Serena continues to play daily, baby bump and all.
Women can do everything!
4 Gal Gadot—Super Heroes Carry Babies, Too.
The world can’t believe that Gal Gadot filmed Wonder Woman while 5 months pregnant.
Gadot first hid her early pregnancy on the set of Wonder Woman to avoid being treated differently on the set. She hid in corners to puke during the throws of morning sickness and switched to sensible shoes. Then at 5 months pregnant, Gadot had to reshoot some scenes from the action heavy film. The crew used special angles and covered her growing bump with green cloth that could later be digitally edited.
Trolls took to complain about the pregnant actress as if she actually battled villains in an intergalactic adventure while pregnant. (I am pretty sure that intergalactic battles with super evil are on the banned list in What to Expect While You Are Expecting, right between sushi and roller coasters.). However, Gal is not actually Wonder Woman.
She is an actress. A good dose of reality is the best response of all and we think she really is Wonder Woman.
Keep slaying it, Gal!
3 Kristi Gordan—Forecasting Away the Fat Shamers
Canadian Meterologist Kristi Gordan received hate mail all over her pregnancy!
"Buy some decent clothes and have some respect for your unborn child. You're not the first pregnant woman. OMG,” one viewer wrote.
Others suggested she wear looser clothing and even suggested she go on maternity leave early! Calls flooded in and had to be fielded by the station receptionist.
Gordan was not surprised. She received the same sort of vile hate mail during her first pregnancy as well. But the second time around, the veteran meteorologist was not going to take it.
“Pregnant women don’t have to feel ashamed of their growing bodies. This type of disapproval is a relic from a different time. I don’t understand how a pregnant belly can bring on so much emotional criticism and propel people to write snarky letters of disgust, or call to complain. Is it really that big of a deal? There are far more important things to be upset about,” Gordan wrote in her blog.
This meteorologist rocks!
2 Kelly Clarkson—America’s Idol
When Kelly Clarkson was pregnant with her daughter River Rose, the internet took to asking constantly, “Just how pregnant are you?”
Kelly, who has grown to love her body, took the constant crIticism hard. She said what hurt her the most was how the negative body talk would affect other women.
“I think what hurts my feelings for people is that I’ll go and have a meet and greet after a show. And a girl that’s, like, bigger than me will be in the meet and greet and be like, ‘Oh God, if they think you’re big I must be so fat to them,'” Kelly said on The Ellen Show
Trolls beware: fat-shaming Kelly Clarkson is risky. The singer does not take the public flak quietly. Recently, when receiving a tweet that said “You’re fat,” Kelly responded in the best way possible:
"and still f***ing awesome."
Rock on Kelly!
1 Snooki—Jersey Girl Tells It Like It Is
Snooki who rose to fame on the reality show Jersey Shore is done with the haters. Shamed through her two pregnancies, Snooki really lost it when pregnant for the second time. The news of her pregnancy hit the press before she had a chance to make an announcement. Then a pop culture blogger wrote a piece entitled “Snooki is pregnant again, God Help Us,” trashing Snooki’s pregnancy, her book and her motherhood. Tabloids swore that Snooki was no longer working because her baby bump was jeopardizing appearances.
Snooki gave all the haters and a big taste of Jersey Girl, writing:
“With all the trouble in this world you're asking God to help us because I'm expanding my family and happen to be an amazing mother to my children? Keep the 2012 jokes to yourself."
