For the most part, tabloids seem to predict celebrity pregnancies from a mile away. As soon as a couple gets married (or even shortly after they start dating!) the baby rumors begin swirling. Anonymous sources come out of the woodwork claiming the famous folks in question are trying for a little one or are already pregnant. This is why some celebrity baby announcements aren’t all that surprising.

However, with that being said, there are other celebrity pregnancies that catch us by total surprise. For some stars, they’re able to hide their good news until right before or even after their new addition has arrived — unless the paparazzi snap a photo before then, that is. Even if the celebrity in question announced their pregnancy early on, it can still feel like it came out of nowhere. Perhaps the star is young or newly got into or out of a relationship. Other times, the individual has said they never saw themselves having kids.

Whatever the reason, we can think of plenty of famous pregnancies that happily surprised fans. Even if it’s a surprise, a celebrity baby is always happy news. Keep reading to see the top twenty famous pregnancies we never saw coming.

20 Tyra Banks and Erik Asla

Many fans were surprised when they learned Tyra Banks became a mom considering she wasn’t married and no one knew she was expecting. She only announced the birth of her son, York, after the fact. The star and her then-boyfriend Erik Asla had turned to surrogacy to expand their family, but clearly kept it on the down-low. "The best present we worked and prayed so hard for is finally here,” Tyra wrote online during the announcement. “As we thank the angel of a woman that carried our miracle baby boy for us, we pray for everyone who struggles to reach this joyous milestone.”

19 Rob Kardashian and Blac Chyna

Fans weren’t over the surprise when Rob Kardashian merely started dating Blac Chyna, so no one saw it coming when they announced her pregnancy only four months after they started dating. Their daughter was born in November 2016, but the pair ended up breaking up the following month, marking less than a year they’d been together. The reason fans were so surprised by the couple’s relationship is because of their weird connection. At the time, Rob’s younger sister Kylie was dating rapper Tyga, who shares a son with Chyna. Some fans even wondered if Chyna had a baby with Rob only to get back at her ex.

18 Jamie-Lynn Spears

Britney isn’t the only Spears sister who surprised the world when she got pregnant. In fact, the pop star’s young sister, Jamie-Lynn, was making headlines first after she gave her infamous 2007 Ok! Magazine cover story confirming she was pregnant at only 16 years old. The following year, she welcomed her daughter, Maddie, with her then-boyfriend Casey Aldridge. Shortly after, her hit TV show Zoey 101 was canceled by Nickelodeon. While many assume it was over the controversy of her having a baby so young, Jamie-Lynn later clarified she wanted to leave the show to focus on her daughter. The celebrity is now married and has a second daughter.

17 Adele

Adele was just coming down from an amazing high in her professional life (aka winning a bazillion Grammy’s) when she announced her pregnancy in mid-2012. The star was only 24 years old at the time, so her young age had many fans convinced she wouldn’t be starting a family any time soon. Adele had also only started dating her then-boyfriend, Simon Konecki, less than a year earlier. The singer subsequently vanished from social media during her pregnancy only to resurface after giving birth to her son Angelo, which only fed the speculation surrounding her surprise pregnancy.

16 Enrique Iglesias and Anna Kournikova

Enrique and Anna proved exactly just how private they are when they waited until after the birth of their twins to welcome their arrival, much to the delight of fans. The pair have been in a relationship since 2001, although they’ve never married. Their twins, Nicholas and Lucy, were born in 2016, despite fans not even knowing Anna was pregnant. “There comes a point when you've been with someone for a certain amount of time that I believe that you are like, married,” Enrique said of their relationship in 2011, Daily Mail reports. “I guess the only difference is that we haven't walked down the aisle.”

15 Britney Spears and Kevin Federline

Britney Spears was already beginning to go downhill when she unexpectedly married Kevin Federline, her back-up dancer, only months after meeting in 2004. The couple did not delay in starting a family, although their back-to-back pregnancies definitely weren’t foreseen by fans. Their son Sean was born in 2005, while Jayden James was born in 2006. Britney and K-Fed eventually broke up a year after their youngest son’s birth, which sent the popstar into even more of a spiral. Luckily, nowadays, the exes are said to be successfully co-parenting and Britney has found love again.

14 Mindy Kaling

The Mindy Project star Mindy Kaling threw fans a curveball when she revealed she was pregnant with her first child in 2017. The celebrity wasn’t in a public relationship, so to say it took the public by surprise would be an understatement. Immediately speculation began over who was the baby’s father. Eventually, Mindy gave birth to her daughter Katherine in December of the same year. As of now, she has still not confirmed the paternity. “I didn't think I'd have a child before I got married, but hey, it turned out that way, and I wouldn't change a thing,” Mindy has said of her pregnancy, Elle reports. “I didn't think I'd have dessert before breakfast today, but hey, it turned out that way and I wouldn't change a thing.”

13 Ellen Pompeo and Chris Ivery

Grey’s Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo is a mother-of-three, but it was the delivery of her third child that took most fans off-guard. In 2016, the celebrity confirmed via social media that she and her husband had welcomed a son through the help of a surrogate. Up until then, no one knew the celebrity was wanting to expand her family, let alone use a surrogate. Ellen delivered her first child naturally but chose surrogacy for babies no. 2 and 3 due to work commitments. "This is an incredible thing to do with your life, to give the gift of carrying someone's child, so I am forever grateful and feel very blessed,” Ellen has said about surrogacy, E! News reports.

12 Alexis Bledel and Vincent Kartheiser

Gilmore Girls star Alexis Bledel has always kept a low profile when it comes to her personal life, especially in reference to her marriage to Vincent Kartheiser, whom she met during her time on Mad Men. The couple married in 2014 after two years together. No one would’ve known the actress gave birth to their first child, a son, in the fall of 2015 if her GG co-star Scott Patterson didn’t spill the beans when promoting the Netflix reboot of their show. "She's really blossomed as a woman and now she's a proud new mother and married and happy," he told Glamour in 2016, confirming Alexis was a mom. At the moment, there’s still no word on what Alexis and Vincent named their little man.

11 Anne Hathaway and Adam Shulman

Anne Hathaway is another actress who managed to hide her pregnancy until after she delivered a la Kylie Jenner style! Anne has been married to Adam Shulman since 2012. Although the celebrity welcomed her son, Jonathan, in March of 2016, the news of his arrival didn’t break until the following month. Afterward, the star lamented of how difficult it was keeping such a big secret. "I get very flushed when I lie, so I am very bad at keeping secrets. People can always tell what's up," she explained, Marie Claire reports. "The only secret that I kept, and I will tell you I got really good at lying, was when I was pregnant.”

10 Donald Glover and Michelle White

Donald Glover (aka Childish Gambino) didn’t confirm his girlfriend had given birth until his acceptance speech at the 2017 Golden Globes, long after she’d given birth. “I really want to say thank you to my son and the mother of my son for making me believe in people again and things being possible,” he said during the speech, Us Weekly. Their son Legend was born in early 2016, while their second son was born last year. This celebrity couple is so private that the name of baby no. 2 hasn’t even been revealed to the public.

9 Janet Jackson and Wissam El-Mana

The main reason that Janet Jackson’s pregnancy in 2017 was so surprising was because of the singer’s age. Janet was already 50 years old at the time, leading many fans to assume she’d passed the window of opportunity for pregnancy. Nevertheless, her son, Eissa, was born that same year. Janet had married Qatari business man Wissam El-Mana in a private ceremony in 2012 after two years of dating. However, only a year after their son’s birth Janet filed for divorce. Sources at the time said her husband’s stance on certain issues was causing them to clash, E! News reported.

8 Carey Mulligan and Marcus Mumford

Most fans didn’t even know Carey Mulligan was pregnant when it was confirmed in 2015 that she’d welcomed her first child with her husband, Marcus Mumford, of the band Mumford and Sons. The couple had married in 2012 after several years of dating. "Carey has given birth to a healthy and happy baby. She is just enjoying this time with her family and close friends," a source told E! News in 2015 confirming the birth of their daughter Evelyn Grace. The couple later welcomed a son, Wilfred, in 2017. Even Carey’s second pregnancy was super low-profile.

7 Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green

Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green already had two young sons when they filed for divorce in 2015 after five years of marriage. Fans were convinced the couple was completely over, which is why we were all confused when the actress showed up to a movie premiere in early 2016 visibly pregnant. At first, there was much speculation over the baby’s paternity before Megan shut it down by confirming she and Brian were, indeed, having baby no. 3. Their son, Journey, was delivered later that year. To this day, Meg and Brian remain very much together, proving a baby can be a reason for reconciliation.

6 January Jones

Mad Men fans will remember the time January Jones was expecting due in 2011 to how questionably her pregnancy was handled onscreen (her character was sent to a camp for those struggling with size!). But more surprising than that were the details surrounding the actress’ pregnancy. When she announced her pregnancy prior to her son’s delivery, January stated she would not be revealing the paternity of the father. Sources at the time confirmed she was planning on raising her son, Xander, as a solo parent. “She’s really looking forward to this new chapter in her life as a [solo] mom,” one insider told People. To this day, the actress has never commented on Xander’s father.

5 Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling

Considering that Eva and Ryan were such an unexpected celebrity pairing, their two subsequent pregnancies caught most fans off-guard. The two actors began seeing each other after meeting on the set of The Place Beyond the Pines in 2011. By 2014, they welcomed their daughter Esmeralda. Then in 2016, Eva gave birth to their second little girl, Amada. Fans are still amazed that the two high-profile stars managed to keep both pregnancies secret until after Eva had gone into labor. The couple even avoided the paparazzi taking photos of their girls until only a few years ago.

4 Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott

Of course, this list wouldn’t be complete if we didn’t include the birth of Kylie Jenner’s daughter Stormi. By the time she announced the tyke’s birth in 2018, no fans could say they were particularly surprised. Rumors had been floating around for six months that the reality star was pregnant. Her absence from social media only fuelled the speculation. But, when the baby buzz first began, fans couldn’t believe it. Kylie had only been dating Travis Scott for a mere few months when she would’ve gotten pregnant, after getting out of a years-long relationship with Tyga. However, Kylie has recently hinted she’s ready for baby no. 2, so we won’t be surprised when she announces her next pregnancy.

3 Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban

Nicole and Keith already had one daughter together that the actress had carried naturally, so fans assumed they’d go the same route if they were ever to expand their family again. However, the couple made a surprising announcement in 2010 when they announced the birth of their second daughter, Faith Margaret, via gestational surrogate. No one knew the couple had hired or was in the market to hire a surrogate at the time. We just decided this was our thing together. It kind of just perpetuated itself," Nicole has said of keeping their surrogate’s pregnancy a secret, Marie Claire reports. "[And] it protects her and it protects everyone in the situation."

2 Lucy Liu

Fans were thrilled yet surprised when Lucy Liu announced via social media in 2015 that she had become a mom. The celebrity turned to gestational surrogacy to expand her family, as she didn’t have a long-time partner at the time. But considering she didn’t even hint publicly that she was considering having children solo, many fans were happily taken aback by her good news. Others were surprised, considering the actress was already 46 years old at the time. "Introducing the new little man in my life, my son Rockwell Lloyd Liu,” she wrote in a post dedicated to introducing her new baby.

1 Max Greenfield and Tessa Sanchez

New Girl fans were elated when Max Greenfield and his wife Tessa confirmed via social media in 2015 that they were expecting their second child. But that’s when fans had to do a double take. Up until then, it wasn’t even public knowledge that the actor (who was otherwise relatively unknown since his role in New Girl) had any children. Sure enough, it’s been confirmed his daughter Lily was born in 2010, while his son, Ozzie, was born in 2015. Our only question that remains is whether Max’s kids have playdates with Zooey Deschanel’s son and daughter.
