We can’t imagine what raising kids in the spotlight would be like! Celebrity parents have the paparazzi always on their tail as they try to do normal things with their families, like shop for groceries or do school drop-offs. Many stars say that their kids have become scared of cameras simply because of the number of photographers hunting them down on the daily.
Likewise, think of all of the temptations that would arise for a child of celebrity parents. These kids are thrust into all sort of situations and exposed to things many normal folks could only imagine. Most kids find they grow up fast when living life in Hollywood, and it’s totally understandable when you think about the sorts of A-lister events they go to and famous people they meet.
Now, there are some celebrity parents who try their hardest to give their kids as normal an upbringing as they can. They likely lean on the stricter side and keep their kids away from the paparazzi as well as Hollywood events. But, then there are other celebrity parents who don’t wield such a tough hand. Some famous parents treat their kids like mini-adults, taking them to red carpet events, spoiling them with luxurious goods and staff, and even helping them launch their professional success from an early age. Check out these 20 celebrity parents who often treat their kids like grown-ups than actual children.
20 Beyonce: Thinks Kids Need Staff
Beyonce’s and Jay-Z’s daughter Blue Ivy may only be 7-years old, but that hasn’t stopped the couple from hiring an entire team of staff to tend to the child’s needs and wishes. According to sources, the kiddo has her own stylist, personal shopper, chef, and tutor, making it seem like she’s the celebrity, not her parents.
“Aside from Blue’s bevy of teachers, who instruct the tot in French, Swahili, art and ballet, Bey’s hired a personal chef to cater to her picky appetite,” a source told Star Magazine.
And don’t worry- the twins also have an army of nannies attending to them. “Each child has four nannies” the insider added, noting they get paid a cool $100,000 per year for their services.
19 Mama June: All Those Pageants
Fans first met Honey Boo Boo when she was an outspoken contestant on Toddlers and Tiaras. Her popularity helped her hillbilly family score their own reality show, Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, which catapulted them into fame.
Despite Honey Boo Boo’s success, many fans feel that her mother, Mama June, exploited her daughter’s fame for her own advantage. Not only did she push her to compete on T&T (which, let’s be real, isn’t good for body image), but she subjugated her entire family to judgment for the eyebrow-raising behaviour they displayed on their own show.
But perhaps the biggest sign that Mama June wasn’t treating her kids like children at all was when she began dating Mark McDaniel, who was a convicted felon and accused of harming her eldest daughter. Despite their show being cancelled by TLC for her ties to him and her children vocally being against it, Mama June still continued to date McDaniel.
18 Farrah Abraham: Takes Breaks From Her Kid
Farrah Abraham has received tons of criticism for her parenting skills over the years, specifically for the fact that she doesn’t seem to treat her 9-year old daughter age appropriately.
For instance, Farrah took a “break” from her then-4-year old daughter for a few months in 2013 (because that’s totally realistic for parents). “It’s healthy that we have a break,” she told In Touch at the time. “She has her own life and is doing her own thing, and I’m doing mine.” The then-22-year old words’ made it seem like she was talking about a friend or significant other, rather than her own child.
More recently, Farrah came under fire for posting a video of Sophia dancing in her underwear to social media, which many fans felt was not appropriate whatsoever. Interestingly, Farrah’s father Michael came to her defense online, stating that it was no different than his granddaughter wearing a bikini and everyone else’s minds are just in the gutter.
17 Yolanda Foster: Getting Into The Family Business
Former supermodel Yolanda Foster is the famous mama behind three of the world’s top models today: Gigi, Bella, and Anwar Hadid. However, some fans have raised eyebrows over how young her kids were when she started them in show biz. Gigi, for instance, was modeling in a national campaign for Guess by the age of 6.
All of her kids were up-and-coming in the fashion industry by the time they were in their mid-teens. Like many young kids and teens in entertainment, the Hadid children have had their fair of problems. Some fans think that might be a sign the Hadid kids grew up too soon and too fast.
16 Victoria Beckham: Treats Harper Like Her Mini-Me
Harper Beckham is the stylish daughter of Victoria and David Beckham. When most moms take their toddlers out, they go to the park or for a play date with another kid and their mom. But that wasn’t the upbringing Harper had.
When she was as young as 3, the child was already sitting in on runways shows with the likes of Anna Wintour and Karl Lagerfeld. She’s always dressed impeccably in designer duds and staying quiet at her parents’ side. Harper seems like one of the most well-behaved, well-dressed kids in Hollywood, and that’s likely because her parents treat her as older beyond her years.
Hey, growing up in the same social circle as Anna Wintour will do that to you.
15 Kim Zolciak: Like Mother, Like Daughter
Fans will recognize Kim Zolciak from The Real Housewives of Atlanta, which took a look at her large family. Kim has six kids in total. She has two older daughters from previous relationships: Brielle (born in 1997) and Ariana (born in 2001). She went on to marry Kroy Biermann in 2011, and together they have four children: Kroy (born in 2011), Kash (born in 2012) and twins Kaia and Kane (born in 2013).
This reality star is known for being a bit of a Diva and has passed on her boisterous personality to her eldest daughters, who are noticeably become carbon-copies of their blonde mama. Despite the girls being in their teens, Kim has had no problem with them getting procedures to enhance their looks, just as she’s done. Likewise, she’s partied it up at numerous Hollywood events with her girls, despite them being underage.
Although this hasn’t sat well with many fans, who claim eldest daughter Brielle has already overdone it with the enhancements, the Zolciak-Biermann family is continuing to do their thing.
14 Michelle Duggar: The Kids Raise Each Other
Michelle and Jim-Bob Duggar have become famous for their giant brood of nineteen children. Their lives were famously documented on the hit TLC reality show 19 Kids and Counting, and now its spinoff Counting On.
The Duggars have come under fire numerous times for their parenting techniques. But one of the biggest qualms fans have with the famous family is that they seem to have a family rule that the older kids need to help out with the younger kids. Now, this isn’t uncommon of large families, but some feel the Duggars take this overboard and that the older siblings are raising the younger ones more so than their parents.
For instance, many fans have expressed concerns about how it seems the oldest sister, Jana, is always doing things for her younger siblings, like making their meals or getting them dresses. Likewise, the family has received criticism for making their youngest children do intensive chores, like when Jessa posted a pic of the toddlers mopping the floor.
13 Madonna: Kids Are Bound To Experiment
Given her wild reputation, no one expects Madonna to be the strictest mother in the world. But perhaps the celeb, who’s a mother to six children, is a bit too lenient, as she’s expressed her expectation that her kids will engage in risky behaviour (and that she’d be fine with it). After all, kids are supposed to experiment, right?
Back in 2016, her then-16-year old son Rocco was arrested for possession. Sources at the time said Madonna had been okay with Rocco and his teenage friends carrying on with their behaviour, so long as it was under her roof. In the end, Rocco went to live with his father, Guy Ritchie, in the UK after a tumultuous custody battle. So perhaps this is a sign Madonna needs to be running a tighter ship with her kids.
12 Kim Kardashian: Just A Touch Of Lipstick
Kim Kardashian and husband Kanye West are currently expecting another son via surrogate, which will bring their total of children to four. And while Kim has raved about how much she loves motherhood, not all of her fans are convinced she’s doing the best job.
Specifically, some fans feel like she’s rushing her eldest daughter, North, to grow up before it's her time. The reality star has come under fire for allowing North to wear hair extensions as well as a full face of makeup before she was even six. And we’re not talking about play makeup done while at home- North has been allowed to show up to A-list events sporting red lipstick.
While some fans think this is a sign that Kim is allowing her daughter to act too grown up for her age, others expect it given how immersed Kim is in the beauty industry. Do you think makeup on a six-year-old is going too far?
11 Nadya Suleman: Kids Take Care Of Themselves, Right?
Nadya Suleman seemed out of touch with reality in 2009 when she announced she was expecting octuplets via IVF, despite already having six kids at home while living off of public assistance- and that’s probably why the doctor who impregnated her later lost his license.
The public was immediately fascinated with Nadya, who they dubbed Octomom, when she came forward with her story. She gave multiple interviews in subsequent years, and each time she appeared to believe that raising 14 kids is a lot easier than people expect. In fact, sometimes it appeared she believed the kids would simply raise themselves.
In recent years, reality seems to have caught up to this busy mom. She’s been open about her financial struggles (because having that many kids are expensive).
10 Lionel Richie: Accepts That They're Wild Childs
Singer Lionel Richie is a father of three, but his family has garnered attention mainly for the behaviour of his two daughters, Nicole and Sofia. In the early 2000s, Nicole Richie was the socialite of the moment and she got into all sorts of trouble with her then-bestie, Paris Hilton. Despite many fans seeing Nicole’s struggles, Lionel always seemed to just let her do her own thing.
And the same can be said of his parenting attitude towards his younger daughter Sofia. Lionel received backlash when the then-19-year old began dating Kardashian baby daddy Scott Disick, who was 15 years her senior. Fans assumed Lionel must have an issue with it, but the celeb has only been supportive of their relationship to the media, saying Sofia will do what she wants to do. It seems like he’s content letting his girls figure out things on their own!
9 Johnny Depp: Supported Lily Dropping Out Of School
Johnny Depp is a bit of an oddball, so no one expects his approach to parenting to be classic. However, fans were surprised when it came to light that the actor and his former partner, Vanessa Paradis, supported their daughter Lily-Rose dropping out of high school to pursue modeling in 2016.
Many fans feel that its parent’s responsibility to encourage their child to focus on their education. It’s one thing to decide not to pursue a University degree in favour of work in entertainment (and when your dad is Johnny Depp, that might be a wise choice), but failing to get a high school diploma is a different story. Maybe this is a sign Johnny and Vanessa too readily treated their daughter as an adult versus a teen.
“They were in no position to tell me, ‘Get your diploma first,'” Lily told Vanity Fair of her controversial decision, demonstrating that she doesn’t need to get her parents’ permission to make such a big choice.
8 Candace Cameron Bure: Runs Her Home Like A Bootcamp
Full House alum Candace Cameron Bure, who’s now a mother of three, has come under fire for her controversial parenting decisions in the past. The celeb has a very strict set of house rules she expects her kids to follow, which some feel are a bit too intense to put on kids.
For instance, Candace and her professional hockey-playing husband expect their kids to workout every day. Likewise, they ban electronics during weekdays, except for studying purposes. The actress has even admitted to adding her kids’ friends on social media so she can get to know them better as well as monitoring her kids' online activities.
If we didn’t know better, we might confuse Candace’s home with a Bootcamp!
7 Pamela Anderson: Believes Boys Will Be Boys
It’s no secret that Pamela Anderson was a wild child back in her day. In the ‘90s, fans couldn’t stop hearing about her tumultuous relationship with Tommy Lee, who she was married to from 1995-98. Together, the former couple has two sons: Brandon (born in 1996) and Dylan (born in 1997).
And it looks like Pam’s wild days have influenced her parenting style! The actress has made it clear to the media that she’d rather act like her sons’ friend than an authority figure. She’s said that both she and her ex-husband are okay with their boys engaging in risky behaviour since they did the same thing when they were young.
"I really believe in my kids. My kids have had a great foundation. They have seen the world," Pam said about her parenting in 2012.
6 Blac Chyna: Parenting Isn't Always A Dream
Blac Chyna has come under fire for many things during her time in the spotlight and parenting is one of them. The reality star shares a son, King Cairo, with her ex Tyga, and a daughter, Dream, with her other ex Rob Kardashian.
Some fans feel that the celeb treats her kids like accessories rather than as children. Chyna received backlash after she became pregnant with Dream, as many fans thought it was to get back at her ex Tyga, who was then dating Rob’s sister, Kylie. It didn’t help that Chyna broke up with Rob seemingly out of the blue weeks after they welcomed their daughter.
On top of that, Chyna has also been criticized for allowing 2-year old Dream to sport hair extensions and makeup, although that seems to be the norm in the Kardashian household.
5 Jenelle Evans: Anything Goes On The Land
Teen Mom 2 star Jenelle Evans is always in the headlines for something or the other, and it’s usually over her parenting. There have been tons of times fans have been concerned over the things the reality star allows her children to do or says about them.
For instance, she’ received a lot of backlash for the way she talks to her eldest son, Jace, about the custody situation between her and her mother Barbara, who has full legal rights over the boy. Jenelle hasn’t been afraid to bad-mouth her mom in front of Jace as well as ask him questions like who he’d rather live with.
Likewise, Jenelle has also come under fire for allowing her kids to do things like hold guns or ride tractors without supervision on her and her husband’s large property (that they aptly call 'The Land'), which is probably why TM2 views have been skyrocketing.
4 Cindy Crawford: Starting In Showbiz Too Young
Former supermodel Cindy Crawford has two children- daughter Kaia and son Presley- with her husband, Rande Gerber. Kaia followed in her mother’s footsteps at a young age and pursued work in modeling, which so far has been pretty successful for the now-17-year old.
Although Cindy has been supportive of her daughter’s ambitions, some fans think she pushed her too early into showbiz- the teen was modeling in certain outfits as young as 13, which many fans argued wasn’t age appropriate. Some feel that Cindy should’ve encouraged her daughter to wait before launching her professional path.
Yet, even though Kaia has walked runways for international runways, Cindy says her kids still turn to her for professional advice. "Eventually I want to empower them to be in charge of their own [professional lives], but they’re not ready for that yet. Right now they’re mostly, 'Mom, just tell me what to do,'" she told Town and Country.
3 Coco Austin: Babies Aren't Accessories
Coco Austin shares 3-year old daughter Chanel with rapper and Law & Order: SVU star with Ice-T. The celeb loves sharing photos of her and her mini-me wearing identical outfits, but not all of her followers are fans.
Coco has received some backlash from fans who don’t think the outfits are age-appropriate for a toddler and that the mama should dress Chanel in something more child-friendly. However, the couple has told the media that the naysayers don’t bother them, so it doesn’t sound like Coco will be switching up her parenting style anytime soon.
“We face scrutiny whether you have a baby or not, so having a baby, you’re like in this little microscope because they want you to do something wrong so they can say something bad, that you’re a bad mother,” Coco told Us Weekly. “But we’re just like regular moms, we’re still trying to figure it out. We don’t know everything, we’re not perfect.”
2 Tom Cruise: Distance Makes The Heart Grow Fonder?
Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes had a whirlwind romance that resulted in the birth of one child, daughter Suri, before the couple divorced in 2012. However, after their split, Tom appeared to get more distant from his child, with sources saying his involvement in Scientology was to blame.
Sources have said the actor feels too busy to visit his daughter and that it's in her best interest in they remain distant, which sounds like something you’d be more likely to tell a friend rather than your only child. Reports say the father-daughter duo haven’t seen each other in close to half a decade.
Just last Father’s Day, a source told In Touch that Tom was only miles away from his daughter, yet didn’t see her. Tom could have easily made the trip to see Suri. It only takes about 30 minutes without traffic,” they said. “It would’ve only added a few hours to his busy schedule.” While this sort of separation might be okay if Suri was an adult, Tom would be wise to remember she’s just a little girl who probably missed her dad.
1 Kris Jenner: When Building An Empire
There’s a reason Kris Jenner’s kids call her ‘Momager’ and not just ‘Mom’!
If there was any famous mama determined to establish a professional path for her kids in the spotlight, it was Kris. When Kim first became a household name in the early 2000s, Kris jumped on every opportunity to make sure the fame would last (and boy did it). She pushed her other three older kids to take advantage of opportunities that came their way to establish their professional paths.
But while Kim, Khloe, Kourt, and Rob were all adults by the time the family became famous, Kylie and Kendall weren’t. Some fans see it as problematic that Kris pushed Kylie and Kendall into the limelight while they were still in their teens- with Kendall, she’s been modeling since in her pre-teens, and Kylie began her makeup empire when she was barely out of high school. Should this mom have just let her kids be kids?
