When a mother first finds out she is pregnant, nothing can quite describe the feeling she gets from joy to apprehension and for some, they literally get sick with panic. After the initial shock or excitement, a mother starts to grow her baby while looking forward to that day when she can go for that initial scan and find out what gender her baby will be. This is usually handled differently by most people.

There are those who plan a party to reveal the gender and who insist on the doctor keeping it private until friends and family can reveal the gender. But there are others who cannot hold the excitement and would rather find out there and then.

Some topics are highly controversial; they are the secret feelings we whisper behind the closed doors of our bathroom with the water running. There are millions of mothers fighting infertility and that is why these pervasive thoughts that invade our heads when we first learn our baby’s gender are so taboo. We bury them deep and they in turn brew and stew into depression. This would be well handled if only the topic would leave the bathroom and come out into the public domain.

This topic is gender disappointment.

For celebrities, the gender reveal is a huge affair and it is customary to float blue or pink balloons or give hints here and there to let the world know what the gender the baby is. Disappointed or excited, these celebrity moms and dads keep their feelings well hidden in front of the camera and their desires are never revealed. These 20 celebs though, admitted they were disappointed with their baby’s gender.

20 Khloe Kardashian

When Khloe Kardashian decided to air her gender reveal on national television, her joy was palpable, she was looking forward to having her first baby, which is exciting for any new mom. It later emerged that Khloe was looking forward to having a little boy.

The reveal was meant to be a surprise to her too, but all along, she felt God would favor her desires, but when Kylie announced that she would be having a baby girl, her disappointment was something she couldn’t hide.

As reported in In Style, she said, "I'm really hoping Kylie's gonna say she's lying and like I'm really having a boy."

19 Rob Kardashian

Another Kardashian went through gender disappointment in the form of Rob. When it was revealed on Rob & Chyna that his girlfriend would be having a girl he was less than thrilled.

He explained why he wanted a boy saying, "It's an emotional moment. Me wanting to have a boy, it definitely stems from my dad," he said on the show as reported by CBS News. "But I'm sure I'll have the same relationship that I had with my father with my daughter."

His initial disappointment was cleared up though when baby Dream was born as he dotes on her and she is now the apple of his eye.

18 Britney Spears

Before her meltdown, Britney Spears had two kids with her ex-husband Kevin Federline. Named Sean Preston and Jayden James, she was upset about the fact that baby number two was not a girl.

She opened up about it to In Style magazine and reported by Today. She lamented, "I would really like to have another baby, a girl. I think she would be like a mini-me. I think it's going to be crazy. I'm not going to feel as alone in the world anymore. I'm going to feel like I have a second person, like, that's me."

Who knows, maybe having a girl would really have stopped her from having the all-famous meltdown.

17 Ashton Kutcher

For Ashton Kutcher, his gender disappointment was funny, to say the least. When his wife was expecting a second child and he discovered that it was to be a boy, he was a little disappointed and he explained why.

Us magazine reports that he told Seth Meyers in an interview, “I was hoping for a girl because first of all, our first girl is [incredible] but also, I figured if we had a girl second, [Mila] might give me one more shot at having a boy, and now I don’t know. It’s even money. She might cut me off. I want, like, 12 of them.

Funny if you ask me.

16 Brian Austin Green

Brian Austin Green and his wife Megan Fox are blessed with four sons, but his desire to have a girl is something he is not ashamed of expressing.

Just Jared reported that he told Hollywood Pipeline, "I want a girl, I really want a girl, I’m worried that if I try, I'll just get another boy ... I love my boys, but I'll have another boy ... and I don't know if I'm ready for five."

Boys can be a handful and with four already, this actor can be forgiven for shying away from a fifth. A little girl would be just the thing to neutralize all the testosterone flying around in his house.

15 Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi

Snooki would make a beautiful mom to a beautiful baby girl. She once admitted to having been disappointed when she had a boy first, preferring a girl instead and even though she later got her girl, she was not spared a bout of gender disappointment.

As told by Celebrity Dirty Laundry, she said, "I thought it was going to be a girl. I was hoping it would be because all girls want girls. It’s still my baby, no matter what. I’m excited either way!

She adjusted just fine and spent her time doting on her little boy and was later blessed with a little girl to fulfill her fantasy.

14 Gwen Stefani

Gwen Stefani seems likes she would make a very good mother to a little girl and it would be even more awesome since she would get to share her wardrobe with her little girl. At the moment though she shares her life with her three sons and she has expressed a little disappointment that she does not have a little mini-me at 40-years of age to inherit her elaborate wardrobe.

In an interview reported on by Baby Celebrity Scoop, she is reported having said, "I mean, it does seem weird that I don't have a girl, but I feel like I’m running out of time."

Even with the desire for a girl, she still did not want to overstretch herself, preferring to raise her boys and live in a boy world.

13 Alexa PenaVega

She gained fame as a child star and later she was a contestant on Dancing with the Stars. She experienced disappointment when she was pregnant with a son she had hoped was a girl.

She told Fit Pregnancy, "We were so convinced that we were having a girl that we picked out a name and called the baby that.

Big mistake. I had focused on what I thought was a little girl in my tummy, and when the doctor told us it was a boy, I felt a little crushed, like she just disappeared. Of course, now I'm so in love with my son that I'd feel robbed if it were a girl. But I wish I would've held off on allowing myself to get attached in the first place."

12 Melissa Joan Hart

She endeared herself to us when she was struggling with her weight and later when she starred in the comedy show Melissa and Joey. She is even more endearing now that we know she also gets bouts of gender disappointment.

She may not have voiced it in black and white, but the mother of three has been captured wishing with nostalgia that she had a girl as she talked about her first son's terrible twos.

As she told People, "[He] just would not calm down, he was such a wild man and I would keep saying, ‘Why can’t I have a little girl that just sits and colors?'”

11 Mel B

When it comes to gender disappointment, one gender is always preferable to the other, depending on which gender holds a mom or dad’s fancy. When it came to Mel B of Spice Girl fame, she was looking forward to having a boy after having two girls.

However, she was blessed with another baby girl and even though she loves her three girls, she had hoped for a boy.

As Mirror reported, she said, “I do want a boy. But I’m enjoying my girls and my baby. She’s about to start crawling in Sydney and I’m like, ‘Don’t let her move until I get back!’ It would be nice to have a son, but it wouldn’t be straightaway.

10 Rachel Zoe

For most of us, the initial disappointment wears off and we console ourselves that the gender we got is preferable to our earlier desires.

But when it came to Rachel Zoe, she revealed on her show, The Rachel Zoe Project on Bravo, “I always had this plan in my mind that I was gonna have this little baby girl. I found out I was having a boy, and I did cry for a week. Or two. Maybe even three.”

Luckily for her, this crying seems to have cleaned up her disappointed and she is now quite in love with her son such that she cannot fathom life without him.

9 Jenelle Evans

Women tend to prefer girls. It could be the desire to braid the girl's hair or dress her up in all the frills we wish we had dressed in. Or it could be because when it comes to boys, many of us can’t tell which end of a bat to hit the ball with, and raising one is quite daunting.

As soon as Jenelle Evans found out that she would be having a second child with Nathan Griffith her ex, the Teen Mom 2 star outright told him that she wanted a girl. Her desires were not honored though and she wound up giving birth to a boy.

8 Danielle Lloyd

Danielle Lloyd who gained fame on the show Celebrity Big Brother UK had a house full of testosterone with three boys. When it was time for the big gender reveal, finding out she would be getting an additional ball of energy was something that disappointed her to no end.

She told The Sun, “There’s nothing wrong with four boys but I would've liked a girl. I'll never say never to another baby. I think I would maybe consider doing the gender selection so I can pick the sex of the baby. But my main concern is having this baby now. We'll think of having another baby in the future."

7 Tanner Tolbert

The Bachelor in Paradise father has been indulging in the active reframing of his desire to get a son, of which he has been candid about since he and his spouse Jade Roper announced that she was pregnant.

After his daughter’s birth, he was quoted telling People magazine "I want to at least have one [boy]. We joke and I tell her that she's going to have to keep on trying until we get that boy."

His disappointment is probably because he wants to fashion his son's life to his, but whatever the reason, this bachelor is making no secret of his desires.

6 Tyler Baltierra

Most men want a boy probably because they feel being men themselves then the chromosomal composition they share will make the journey of parenting a boy smoother, after all, this is basically a mini man.

When Tyler Baltierra and his wife Catelynn Lowell of Teen Mom OG held their gender reveal party surrounded by friends and family, under the glare of cameras, Tyler visibly showed his disappointment over the pink confetti that signaled the birth of a girl. The Stir reported that he said, "All my plans are just crumbling."

He was quick to add that he would adjust as time went by. They named the girl Novalee and true to his words, she is now a daddy's girl and he adores her.

5 Gordon Hayward

Gordon Hayward who is the Bolton Celtics forward is the father to two girls. When he and his wife held a gender reveal party, he was less than thrilled when he opened the box together with his wife Robyn and in it, he found pink ribbons.

Through the video that was posted on his wife's Instagram account, it was obvious that the star was a little disappointed by the turn of events. With two girls already and being a sporty guy, it is understandable to have a twinge of remorse. The good news is that he can turn his girls into sporty celebs too.

4 Tracy Gold

The child star has four sons with husband Roby Marshall and seems to be doing quite well with her gentleman house. When she was pregnant with her fourth, Tracy had supposedly hoped for a little girl but was instead was blessed with a boy.

Even though she had a girl dream like all of us, she gave up on the dream and embraced her family without much of a struggle. With a family of four boys, it is understandable to have an occasional twinge of nostalgia for a little girl who doesn’t reek of sweat and who doesn’t fight and push.

3 Victoria Beckham

Women who have children of one gender are always yearning for a child of the opposite gender and Victoria was no different.

According to The Mirror, Victoria was ready for a girl and some people even went ahead to propose that she goes for gender prediction to increase her chances of having a girl because, at 36-years of age, her chances of getting a child of her preferred gender with the use of PGD was 35 to 45 percent for success.

She did not opt for it but, instead chose to go the natural way, finally getting her daughter as a fourth child.

2 Katherine Asbery

She went all out in an attempt to get a baby girl and in her book Altered Dreams she explains her struggle. She timed intercourse and even ate vegetables and fruits and a low salt diet and all the wacky things the internet threw at her, but none worked says the mother of three boys. “We did it all; this wasn't how I saw my life."

In her book, she explains about gender disappointment saying, "The vast majority is benign psychological reasons, which might have to do with your own hopes, feelings of inadequacy, fears about parenting and what you might do well, what you might have been exposed to. It may feed into something more problematic about conflicts within the parent, or [other] issues", reports the Chicago Tribune.

1 Patricia Heaton

The Everybody Loves Raymond actress has four boys and in her upcoming comedy she is featured as the mother of girls and she says, “It’s nice to have a girl thing going on. I’ve got four boys at home, so this summer was all Transformers, paintball and air [toys]."

She does adore her boys though and the evidence is in her face as she talks about them saying, "It's so much fun to watch them. They're getting to the age where we're almost able to watch movies together, which I'm so happy about."

It must also be nice to have four strong men to guard her as she shops or just goes out grocery shopping.
