Losing a child is always hard. Whether you’ve had a miscarriage or have known a child for a couple of years before having them taken all too soon, it can be a tragic experience.

The sad reality is that about 20% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage. Most of these happen before the mother is even aware that she is pregnant. However, when the miscarriage happens late in the pregnancy or when the couple has been trying for years to get pregnant, the miscarriage can be especially heartbreaking.

Even in babies who survive until term, the global infant mortality rate is 63 deaths per 1000 live births. Of course, this number is much lower in developed countries such as the United States.

Naturally, both miscarriages and infant deaths occur in countries where conflict, malnourishment and health issues are rampant. Even in the back areas of developed countries, there can be areas where these statistics are much higher, offset only by places where the quality of life is better.

But if there’s one thing we can learn from celebrities, it’s that life is unpredictable. Despite the fact that most celebs live life that is far more comfortable than that of the vast majority of us, they are still not exempt from pain and loss.

Here are 20 celebs who you probably didn’t know have lost a baby.

This talks about a vision that the singer and songwriter has where she imagines meeting her baby in a parallel universe, where she imagines contentedly holding the face of her child.

However, she and her husband divorced in 2015.

Yet another singer who wrote of her devastating experience with miscarriage is alternative rock star Tori Amos. Her grief is documented in the song Spark. “She’s convinced she could hold back a glacier,” Amos sings, “but she couldn’t keep baby alive.” Needless to say this piece intimately discusses her feeling of inadequacy after the unfortunate incident.

Some even claimed that she had faked the miscarriage, leading Lohan to swear in court that she did, in fact, have a miscarriage. Whether or not you believe her is up to you. But, here we think we’ll give her the benefit of the doubt.

1 Oprah Winfrey

Media giant Oprah Winfrey has had a tough life. Winfrey herself was born to a teenage mother. She then lived in stark poverty, staying between her grandmother, her mother and her biological father throughout her childhood. At the age of nine, Winfrey fell victim to sexual abuse from close relatives. When she was 13, Winfrey had had enough of the harassment and ran away from home. She became pregnant at the age of 14, but then suffered a miscarriage.

Winfrey has said in interviews that she had felt no emotional connection with her son. If anything, she was relieved as the pregnancy brought her much distress. While most of the miscarriages mentioned above were devastating to the parents, this reaction is understandable in Winfrey’s case as she was then going through an emotionally stressful time and was very young.

The miscarriage, however, did boost Winfrey’s determination to make something of her life. It was among the factors that helped motivate her to get back to school and, eventually, become the woman she is today.
