Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise divorced in 2012 and that changed Suri’s life forever. In the past seven years, she hasn’t seen much of her father at all (at least publicly). There is very limited contact between Tom and his daughter and we certainly never see them photographed together anymore. Tom was given generous visitation rights for his daughter; it just appears as if he doesn’t use them because he hasn’t been a part of her life in a really long time.

She recently turned 13 and is now a teenager and it saddens us to see a child growing up without her father in her life. A lot of the reason why Tom behaves the way he does is apparently because of his belief system which holds some pretty strict rules.

Suri is growing up to be a beautiful young lady and we can still see the resemblance to her father in her face. Katie is raising Suri on her own these days with the help of her family and it looks like tom is missing out. We have seen Suri growing up over the years and there have been a lot of big changes. Check out these 20 photos of Suri Cruise growing up (that Tom Cruise is missing out on).

20 No Father-Daughter Dances With Tom

Unfortunately, for Suri, she will be missing out on a lot because of her father not being in her life. Her teen years are going to be filled with many big moments, like father-daughter dances, prom, graduation and eventually getting married. There is likely a lot that Tom is going to miss out over the years as Suri meets milestones in her life. Hopefully, Jamie Foxx will be able to step in to be there for Suri in ways that only a father could be. His presence in her life will help her along any difficult roads in the future.

19 Katie Is Raising Her To Be A Good Human

That’s something that we all as parents really do try to do. We all want our children to grow up and be genuinely good humans. Her role as a mother is to raise a good human by helping others. Katie told TODAY, "I do a lot to put perspective on life," Holmes said. "We help out the homeless. We do small acts of kindness.” This year Katie had taken Suri on a humanitarian trip to Greece to a refugee camp. Katie posted on social media about her trip. "I love these women who became our friends as we collaborated on many different projects this week. I am so very grateful for this experience. The resilience of these women is so profound and truly inspiring to witness. and I pray for refugees everywhere."

18 She Wants Suri To Put Effort Into Things

Katie isn’t one of those parents that just let her child do whatever she wants and gets away with putting half the effort in at school. Katie wants her daughter to put in as much effort as possible when it comes to her schooling. She told TODAY, “We just focus on what she’s passionate about and how you feel when you achieve your goals. Be true to your sense of opinions. I listen to her. It’s a daily thing." But, quips Holmes, “I also demand a 100 on a spelling test!” She sounds like she really expects her child to work to succeed.

17 Suri Went Through A Makeup Stage

Suri has been a little fashionista basically since the day she was born and it has a lot to do with Katie’s love for fashion. Some of Katie’s parenting decisions have been questioned over the years. Suri has been wearing makeup since the age of five and we are talking ever bright lipsticks. Most parents won’t even allow mascara on their child until they are a little closer to 12. In 2010, we saw Suri photographed in Sephora which you would think would be the last place a child her age should be. Hollywood Life reported that thousands of dollars were spent on her at the time and she was only five or six back then.

16 Katie Takes Inspiration From Jackie O On Raising Kids

Katie Holmes played Jacqueline Kennedy in the TV series The Kennedys After Camelot and she learned a lot about the legendary woman because of it. “She was so graceful, even when she was scared or sad,” Holmes said. One thing she loved about the icon was how she tried to protect her family as much as possible. “I really admire her protection of the Kennedy name, her husband, and how much she wanted her children to be as grounded and normal and successful on their own as possible. Those are the things I love about her - and why I wanted to play her again.”

15 Shielding Her Daughter From The Tabloids

Some celebrities try as hard as possible to shield their children from seeing the stuff that is printed in the tabloids but Katie worries less about that. She has taught Suri that the things that are printed are rarely true so there is no need to shield her from it. During her Town & Country interview, she explained it. “To experience something publicly and privately is a lot for a person to go through,” Katie said. “In today’s world a lot of celebrities probably shield their children from the tabloids; in my household, we know what they print isn’t true, so we don’t pay attention. There are more important things. But it’s very relatable to me; if people know who you are, they might write about you, and you can’t control that.”

14 She’s The Best Dressed Child

This girl has some serious style and we have been seeing it for years. Katie clearly has an influence on her wardrobe and Suri has been in designer, fashionable clothing since she was a baby. Katie certainly has the income to put her child in any type of clothing that she wants to. She’s definitely one of the best-dressed celebrity children in the world. The Daily Mail reported that Suri has a shoe closet that is worth $150,000. This young lady has shoes that were created by designers Marc Jacobs and Christian Louboutin. We couldn’t be more jealous of her wardrobe.

13 Katie Is Moving Towards Permanently Directing For Suri

Katie Holmes has been an actress in the industry for over 20 years now and she has begun dabbling in directing. She directed the movie All We Had and has two other directing credits to her name. She’s actually thinking of making directing her fulltime gig so that she can spend more time with her daughter. “The thing about directing is I can say I have this window and that's when we're getting it done,” she explained. “My child is the most important person to me, and her upbringing is paramount to my work right now.” Suri comes first and she wants to make sure that she is there for her.

12 She Wants Suri To Have An Innocent Childhood

Part of her role as a mother is to make sure that her child has as normal an upbringing as possible and that’s not always easy being a Hollywood star. It’s important to her that Suri’s childhood is innocent and that’s very commendable. During an interview with Town & Country, she explained her role as a mother. “It's very important that I'm present and she has a stable, innocent childhood. I feel so blessed to do what I do, but there's nothing in the world better than watching your child succeed.” Directing would certainly allow her more freedom, and more importantly, time with her teenager.

11 Katie Will Be Sad When Suri Goes Off To College

It’s hard for any parent to imagine their children leaving the nest. Suri is 13 now, so she is well on her way towards graduating high school and moving on to college. Katie told Town & Country that she would be “very, very sad” when her princess heads off to college. “Every day, kids get a little further away from you,” she said. “That's a positive thing. They should be becoming more independent, but it's heartbreaking. You want them to stay with you forever, but they're these amazing beings, and you have to do everything you can to give them what they need — and then they're going to go.”

10 She Doesn’t Over Gift Her Child

Some celebrities spoil their children rotten while others want them to grow up working for the things that they want. Katie seems to be on the side that doesn’t want her child to be spoiled and she doesn’t give a lot of gifts. But we also have to remember that Suri owns $150,000 work of shoes, but we will set that aside for now. She told TODAY, “I don’t over-gift. I don’t inundate my child with a lot of things. We’re trying to raise good humans and some days we’re better at it than others. You don’t always get treats."

9 She Rewards Suri For Hard Work

We already know that Katie expects her daughter to work hard in school and life. She never wants her to take the easy way out. She is willing to reward her daughter for the hard work that she does. Katie told TODAY that rewarding Suri for hard work is important. “I try to reward her for her hard work, and not necessarily the results of the hard work,” she said. It makes sense and it’s a good way for her to go about doing it. She doesn’t want to spoil her child but she does want her to benefit from her hard work.

8 Katie Lets Her Hang Out With Bodyguards

Now that Suri is older, she has a little more freedom to come and go as she pleases especially since there are bodyguards to watch over her. According to In Touch Weekly, Katie has hired bodyguards to go out with Suri. She probably has more freedom with Katie than she ever would have had with Tom. This would be weird for most kids, but celebrity children get used to walking around with a bodyguard pretty quickly. They tend to think of them as their friends after a while. She wants her daughter to have a normal life but when you are a public figure you have to protect your children in different ways.

7 Like All Mothers, She Wants Her Child To Succeed

One thing that Katie loves is watching her daughter grow and seeing her succeed in the ventures that she follows. We all want to see our children do well and Katie is no different. She has been raising Suri for the most part on her own and she has a lot to be proud of. She told TODAY, “I feel so blessed to do what I do, but there’s nothing in the world better than watching your child succeed.” She is also very aware of how her profession affects her child. “This business is so unstable, and you never really know where you’re going to be…”

6 Suri Is Involved In Extracurricular Activities

It’s really important for kids to be involved in extracurricular activities and Katie believes that Suri should be involved in these things. She has had Suri involved in dance classes as well as gymnastics. She has revealed in interviews that Suri “loves ballet.” Dr. Jonathan Alpert, a social psychotherapist states, "Ballet is a great way for kids to learn about discipline and, even more importantly, self-confidence," as reported by HotBaby.com. There are a lot of opportunities like this in New York and who knows maybe Suri will be attending Julliard in the future. That’s a possibility for any girl that loves ballet.

5 She Wants To Have A Strong Mother-Daughter Bond

For a mother, you really want to strive for a strong relationship with your daughter. You want her to come and talk to you when she needs you and you need to start the groundwork for that when they are young. One of the ways that Katie tries to bond with her daughter is just to simply listen to her. Sometimes all you need to do is let your kids know that you are listening to their worries and their fears and that can make all the difference in the world. When you build that bond, your child knows that they can trust you with their thoughts.

4 Bringing New People Into Suri’s Life

We have never seen Suri photographed with Jamie Foxx but we know that he’s a part of their life and probably has been for a long time now. Katie has been careful about introducing people into Suri’s life but at this stage, we know that Jamie Foxx is likely hanging out with Suri as well. They are very private about their relationship which makes sense because there are children on both sides to worry about. According to Hollywood Life, Jamie is a "family man" and "things are finally starting to get a little easier" with him around. It probably helps Suri to have a man around the house as well.

3 She Doesn’t Want Suri To Regret The Past

It’s important for Katie to teach her child to not regret the things that happen in the past. Katie knows that she is fortunate to have the life that she has with her daughter and that wouldn’t have been possible if things hadn’t happened in her past. It’s great advice for anyone to take in. A lot has happened to both of them over the years and there are probably things that Katie didn’t want to happy especially in regards to Tom Cruise. But life must go on and she has to do what is best for her daughter whether Cruise is around or not.

2 She Misses Out On Telluride, Colorado Vacations

When Katie Holmes was married to Tom Cruise, there were a lot more options available to her and Suri in regards to vacations because Cruise owns a lot of property. He owns a home in Telluride, Colorado where he used to take the family on lavish vacations. He even once took Oprah for a snowmobile ride around his property and we could see that it was gorgeous. The lavish property looks like heaven on earth. Suri spends a lot of time with Katie’s family in Ohio but she may miss those times when they were in Colorado. Kids have fun anywhere so she’s probably not even thinking about it.

1 She Never Sees Her Parents Together

We know that Katie and Tom don’t spend any time together even though they are both parents to Suri. The divorce was very hush-hush but there were a lot of allegations made at the time that Katie was willing to keep Tom’s private life hush-hush long as things went her way in the divorce. We’re not sure why Tom isn’t around that much but if Katie and Tom ever spend time together discussing their daughter, it’s never been made public. We’re sure that Katie just wants to keep her distance and there probably won’t be a time where Suri sees her parents together.
