Many times, new mothers had no choice but to decide on a doctor with little to no experience at all. Research in the early 1900s was not

nearly as proficient as it is now, meaning many of the body's functions went unexplained, including labour. Doctors were aware that a baby needed to come out, that it was a painful process, and that was about it.

A pregnant woman in the 1900s was lucky enough to be assigned a doctor or midwife at all.
