It isn’t uncommon for mothers to feel pressured to alter their appearances in order to meet society’s unrealistic standards of beauty. Social media, other mothers at the playground and in PTA meetings, and celeb mamas who never seem to age can cause an exhausted and overwhelmed mom to feel a bit haggard, and like she will never measure up to those around her.
Plastic surgery and other alterations to one’s appearance can help boost a person’s self-esteem, but many experts warn that these methods should never be relied upon to determine one's self-worth. Some moms have gone to extreme measures in an attempt to look how they want to look, or feel they should look.
Speaking about plastic surgery, actress Julianne Moore told The Edit in 2013, “I don’t want to come out condemning anything anybody does, because I think that all of these things can contribute to making people feel better about themselves, and that’s great. But I also want to look like myself. I mean, we’re not going to live forever. You could be dead at 45, and guess what? Then you don’t have to worry about aging.”
The moms that follow have taken their quests for beauty to the extreme, and some will most likely never recover.
20 Farrah's Lip Problem
MTV star Farrah Abraham is no stranger to plastic surgery. She has undergone two breast augmentations, a rhinoplasty and has cheek fillers and a chin implant. She has also had several lip injections. On one occasion, her lip enhancement did not go as planned, and she had an allergic reaction that caused her upper lip to expand to a very unnatural size. The star appeared on The Doctors soon after the incident and shared, "I wanted a lip implant because it was more of a permanent fix...As soon as [the doctor] touched my lip with whatever numbing product he put in there, my lip was having an allergic reaction right away. I was laying down flat, but I was seeing more of my lip come up and come up. I'm just super happy that I'm alive." The star also admitted that the whole debacle was a "wake up call," but that she is still considering getting her butt done.
19 Amber Goes A Few Shades Darker
Teen Mom OG star Amber Portwood was photographed by a sneaky paparazzo one day while out and about. In the pic, she was looking a little...bronzier than usual. A healthy glow is one thing, but Portwood took the term tan to a whole new level and undoubtedly caused anyone who saw her to do a double take. The star has been through her share of struggles and has admitted to being insecure. She shared a cryptic Marilyn Monroe quote on Instagram last summer that had many wondering if she was alright and if she and her fiance Matt Baier had split. She shared, "I'm selfish, impatient and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control and at times hard to handle. But, if you can't handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best."
18 Eyebrow-Raising Brows
The woman in the pic above gets major points for creativity. Her brows are undoubtedly some of the most uniquely shaped on the planet. Sure, they may be a bit extreme, but this gal should be applauded for not being afraid to be who she is...even if she looks a bit different than most people.
On the subject of altering one's natural appearance, reality star Khloe Kardashian has stated, “I think plastic surgery should be viewed almost like makeup, because we’re all putting on a f***ing mask basically every day anyway, when you dye your hair, you’re changing who you are, and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. I think people should get plastic surgery or fillers or lasers or whatever if they want it. That should be your own personal decision.”
17 Jewel's Procedure Didn't Go As Planned
Mother-of-one Jewel rose to fame in the 90s after her first hit "You Were Meant For Me" played on repeat on radio stations all across the United States. Not only did her fans love her angelic voice, they couldn't resist her imperfect smile, something she was unapologetic about. When The Hills star Heidi Montag graced the cover of People magazine after undergoing 10 plastic surgeries, the singer took to Twitter to give her two cents on the matter. She wrote, "There r obviously good reasons 4 plastic surgery...it's also fine w me if its 4 vanity but if u have a deep self-hatred, surgery won't fix it. Never had plastic surgery...even w wonky teeth & the biggest nose in the biz i feel proud of who i am...but not ruling out when im older though!"
The pic above reveals that Jewel has possibly undergone a breast augmentation that didn't go as planned. It's no secret that having children can do a number on a woman's chest, and Jewel is far from the only mama who has gone under the knife since having babies.
16 Tanning Tragedy
Patricia Krentcil, also known as the Tanning Mom, has become famous for her extremely bronzed skin. Some have even labeled her "tanorexic." Krentcil has also taken heat for allegedly taking her young daughter into the tanning booth with her. The mother-of-five graced the cover of In Touch magazine after a long month of not hitting the tanning beds, and showed off her significatly paler new look, saying,"I feel weird and pale."
She has also admitted, "I've had moments where I've felt like, 'I need to be tan.' And I did all the spray tans and lotions and creams, too...Anything to get dark. Once a doctor told me to stop tanning, but I didn't listen to him. I wanted to be dark. I like looking like I just got back from vacation."
15 Makeup Maven
The woman above has most definitely gone to extreme lengths to look a certain way. She's tanned her skin, dyed her hair, caked on makeup and donned fake eyelashes. Her teeth appear to be unnaturally white and her lips look like they've been enhanced in some way. This look is great for some but is definitely not everyone's cup of tea. Actress Emma Watson once boldly mused, “I don’t have perfect teeth. I’m not stick thin. I want to be the person who feels great in her body and can say that she loves it and doesn’t want to change anything. It’s ridiculous that [loving the way you look] seems such an unrealistic goal. I think the actresses who are really successful are the ones who are comfortable in their own skin and still look human.”
14 Goldie Gets Work Done
Actress Goldie Hawn is famous for her roles in the beloved movies Overboard and The First Wives Club, but she's also become known for her obvious use of injectables in an attempt to stay forever young. The star may have had a bit more Botox than most, but her advice to other women is spot on. She has stated, "The only thing that will make you happy is being happy with who you are, and not who people think you are."
The star may encourage others to love themselves the way they are but she is pretty hard on herself. According to the mother of three, "My eyes are too big, my nose is too flat, my ears stick out, my mouth is too big and my face is too small...my body is as thick as a clarinet and my ankles are so skinny that I wear two pairs of bobby socks because I don't want people to see how thin they are."
13 Latoya's About Face
La Toya Jackson's face has certainly changed over the years. She's undergone rhinoplasties and a myriad of other procedures that have transformed her from a sweet-looking young girl to a woman who greatly resembles her late brother, Michael. Gossip magazines have even speculated that she's in danger of losing her barely-there nose if she gets further work done. Jackson has taken heat for posing nude, accusing the King of Pop of being a child molester and for not getting along with her family. No one can deny that her drastic transformation over the years is quite shocking. Luckily, it seems like Jackson has finally found inner peace. She recently shared, "I can honestly say that I am happier now than I have ever been. For the first time in my life, I feel free."
12 Donatella's Drastic Changes
Fashion mogul Donatella Versace is always dressed to the nines, but her physical appearance hasn't fared as well. It's become more and more obvious over the years that she's gone to extremes to keep herself looking youthful. According to respected plastic surgeon Dr. Steve Fallek, it's likely that there isn't much she hasn't had done.
Fallek told Hollywood Life, “She’s pretty much had it all. Botox, fillers, lasers for the skin. Minimal recovery time for those, though there can be some redness of the skin for a few weeks with laser therapy.”
He also believes she's had a "facelift and eyes and brow lift." Another renowned plastic surgeon, Dr. Bruce Katz has observed that the designer has most likely, "had her cheeks augmented, probably with filler and certainly, her lips have been filled, her eyelids are a little droopy. I think she has had some bad Botox because they look like they are drooping. Maybe a little too much Botox in the forehead. She certainly can use some filler in her earlobes, they are very stretched.”
11 That Tan Tho
Many moms like the one above simply adore having a sun-kissed glow, but the risk may not be worth the reward. According to SkinCancer.org, "A tan, whether you get it on the beach, in a bed, or through incidental exposure, is bad news, any way you acquire it." Sure, it's fun to lie out in the sun or relax in a tanning bed on a cold, winter's day, but at what cost? Every time a person is exposed to UV radiation, he or she is more likely to have prematurely aging skin (wrinkles, brown spots, lax skin, etc). In addition to skin issues, people who have used a tanning bed before the age of 35 are at a 75 percent greater risk of developing melanoma at some point in their lives than those who have not.
10 The Bad Girl Job
Breast augmentations are extremely common among today's moms. Most are performed without a hitch and require minimal recovery time, but, every once in awhile, the procedure does not go as planned and women like the one above are left to deal with the aftermath. Why do so many feel the need to enhance their appearances with surgery? Celebrities who seem to be the epitome of physical perfection may have something to do with it. Kylie Jenner has famously transformed her appearance over the last few years. In a post on her app entitled "My Feelings On Plastic Surgery: The Whole Truth", she wrote, "I'm not against plastic surgery … as of now, I only have lip fillers … But I'm also someone who says 'never say never.' If down the line, I get to a point where I'm really uncomfortable with something on my body, I'm not against changing it."
Jocelyn Wildenstein, who has also become known as the Lion Lady due to her extreme appearance, is a New York socialite. It has been reported that Wildenstein has spent upwards of $4,000,000 on plastic surgery.
Actress Julia Roberts is one celeb who doesn't think it's right to spend large amounts of money to change one's appearance. She shared in the September 2010 issue of Elle, "It's unfortunate that we live in such a panicked, dysmorphic society where women don't even give themselves a chance to see what they'll look like as older persons. I want to have some idea of what I'll look like before I start cleaning the slates. I want my kids to know when I'm pissed, when I'm happy, and when I'm confounded. Your face tells a story...and it shouldn't be a story about your drive to the doctor's office."
8 Snooki's New Look
Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi has never been shy about admitting she's had work done. She's been open about the fact that she's gotten Botox and lip fillers. In October of 2016, she took to Instagram to announce she'd had breast augmentation surgery and to introduce her "new boobies" to her fans. She posted a pic in which she posed with her plastic surgeon and wrote, "Here's my doctor who is AMAZING!" After the surgery, the mother-of-two also posted an online video in which she explained, "Being a mom, obviously your boobs are destroyed by having kids, especially breastfeeding. I want to look hot for my husband, but I also want to feel great about myself and that was just an insecurity that I had." The reality star has also said, "I'm in my prime right now...I want to be as hot as I can!"
7 Priscilla's Precarious Procedures
Priscilla Presley is an actress and businesswoman perhaps best known for being married to the late Elvis Presley. She has been open about the fact that some of the cosmetic procedures she's had over the years did not go as planned. Her spokesperson has shared, "Priscilla Presley was one of many documented victims of Dr. [Daniel] Serrano. An investigation which uncovered his misconduct ultimately lead to his imprisonment. Ms. Presley dealt with this matter years ago and everything is now well." Some of Serrano's patients suffered, lumps, paralysis and even holes in their faces. Presley has not allowed the botched procedures to stop her from living life to the fullest. She once stated, "Inner beauty should be the most important part of improving one's self." She has also admitted, "There is a shyness about me and I really need to get out more."
6 Doll Face
While we aren't sure what exactly the woman above has done to alter her appearance, it's clear that she's undergone a procedure or two (or twenty). She now looks more like a doll than a human, but, if this is the look she aspired to achieve, more power to her.
Speaking on plastic surgery, actress Halle Berry told Yahoo Beauty in 2015, "It is pressure. When you see everybody around you doing it, you have those moments when you think, 'To stay alive in this business, do I need to do the same thing?' I won't lie and tell you that those things don't cross my mind because somebody is always suggesting it to me. 'You know, if you just did a little bit of this and that, lift this up, then this would be a little bit better.' It's almost like crack that people are trying to push on you. That's what I feel like."
5 That Looks Permanent
One trend currently taking the world by storm is tattooed-on makeup. Many women get eyeliner permanently inked around their eyes and even a shade of red or pink tatted onto their lips. It appears that the woman above has opted for permanent black lip liner. Not for everyone, but, if she likes it, that's all that matters.
When asked about if she'd ever considered plastic surgery in 2007, Jodie Foster told MORE, "Nah. It's not my thing. I don't have anything against it for other people. Whatever they want to do, I'm fine with it. For me, it's really a self-image thing. Like, I'd rather have somebody go, 'Wow, that girl has a big nose' than 'Wow, that girl has a bad nose job.' I'd rather have a comment about who I am than about something that identifies me as being ashamed of who I am."
4 Unfortunate Lip Incident
The woman above decided she wanted to enhance her lips a bit. She shared a before and after pic on social media, and, the result of her procedure was definitely a drastic one. No word on whether or not she likes her new look, or if her lips will ever be able to return to the way they were before she got them done. Actress Kristen Stewart is one celeb who has yet to climb aboard the plastic surgery train. Why? She likes the way she looks and is afraid of messing with it. She told Harper's BAZAAR in 2015, "I am so freaked out by the idea of doing anything. And maybe that's completely arrogant but I don't want to change anything about myself. I think the women who do are losing their minds. It's vandalism."
It appears the woman in the pic above has gone to great lengths to look a certain way. Along with her dark tan and heavy makeup, it appears that her brows have been shaved off and painted back on and it's likely she's had alterations to her face and breasts. It's a look some aspire to achieve and others would rather not. Oscar winner Meryl Streep, a woman who has definitely aged gracefully, spoke to E! Online about plastic surgery in 2010. The actress stated, "To each his own. I really understand the chagrin that accompanies aging, especially for a woman, but I think that people look funny when they freeze their faces."
A-list actress Gwyneth Paltrow told Harper's BAZAAR in 2013, "I would be scared to go under the knife, but you know, talk to me when I'm 50. I'll try anything. Except I won't do Botox again because I looked crazy. I looked like Joan Rivers!"
2 A Propensity For Piercings
The woman above has a unique look. Not only has she most likely chosen to alter her appearance with plastic surgery, but has also decided to pepper her mug with piercings. She has tiny metal balls decorating her eyebrows, nose and upper lip (ouch!). Sure, getting the piercings may have been painful, but it has been firmly established that people are willing to go to great lengths and suffer pain and discomfort, in order to look the way they want to look. Actress Jennifer Aniston is one celeb who never seems to age. If she's had work done, it's not in any way apparent. She told InStyle in 2015, "People lose perspective. I look around and see how bad plastic surgery and injections can really kick you in the a**."
1 Melanie's Surgery Mistakes
Actress Melanie Griffiths has been open about the fact that she may have taken her plastic surgeries too far. She has been criticized by many for ruining her looks in a futile attempt to remain young. Griffiths split from her hubby of 18 years, Antonio Banderas, in 2015, and often attends red carpet events with her famous daughter, Dakota Johnson. She never shies away from the bright lights despite talk that she has destroyed her face. Speaking about the drawbacks of having cosmetic surgery, Griffiths told Porter magazine, "I didn't (realize it had gone too far) until people started saying, 'Oh my God, what has she done?!' I was so hurt I went to a different doctor and he started dissolving all of this (stuff) that this other woman doctor had put in. Hopefully, I look more normal now."
