So, the time has finally come, and mom has just seen those two pink lines on the pregnancy test. Now what? She is excited and a little bit nervous about how these next 9 months will go and her mind may be filled with everything she needs to be doing, and some things she may need to stop doing.

If this is her first time, she may not have any clue what she is doing or what she should be doing. Family, friends and healthcare professionals will try and let her know, but all of this information can be a bit much. Sometimes the best person she can listen to is someone who has recently been pregnant. She can learn from their regrets.

It may seem like 9 months is a long time, but it goes by very quickly and before mom knows it she has her baby in her arms. She will be full of love and awe and the realization that her life has just changed and there were so many things she wanted to do before the baby came that she simply forgot about.

We all know what a honeymoon is, it is that time for a couple to be alone following a wedding. A chance for them to relax and enjoy each other’s company after the stressful event of planning a wedding. A babymoon is no different, except it comes before a stressful event.

More and more women are starting to go on Babymoon’s, a chance to relax as a couple before the baby comes. Some choose to go somewhere exotic and tropical, while others just choose to go to a spa for a weekend. It is always a good idea to get away and relax as much as possible, because a baby really does change everything and for a long time.

A lot of people still think that you can not exercise while you are pregnant. That there should be no strain put on the body that is growing a nurturing a little baby. This is not true. If a woman enjoyed an active lifestyle before getting pregnant not much has to change. If she was not always an active person, there are still options.

There are many prenatal exercise classes that mom can take part in, yoga being one of the most popular. A healthy body is a wonderful thing, especially during pregnancy. It will make it easier to deal with all the aches and pains that come with a growing baby and it is proven to help childbirth go by quicker and easier.

18 Spend More On Maternity Clothes

Maternity clothes are kind of a grey area when it comes to expectant moms. Some choose to go to the boutique stores and pick out the most fashionable items to flaunt that growing belly. Some see this as a waste of money because they are only going to wear these clothes for less than 9-months. These kinds of people choose to wear oversized t-shirts and sweatpants.

This can be a large regret once the baby is here. Once the baby is here, the belly is gone, and mom can find herself sad and wishing she had pictures of herself in some cute clothes to remember the time she was pregnant.

17 Find A Doula

The way women give birth is changing, but very slowly. No longer are women just staying with an OB and a hospital to give birth. They are starting to go with a midwife, doula and are choosing home births and birth centers a lot more. This is changing slowly though, and more and more women are regretting finding a doula when they are pregnant.

A doula is someone who offers a lot of emotional support to a woman through her pregnancy, during childbirth and after birth as well. Our partners and mothers are great, but doulas are professionally trained to provide the right kind of support for a woman during labour.

16 Spend More Time Alone

Here is a big problem, once a woman gives birth she is never alone ever again. Sure, there may be moments where she has time to herself but that will be taken up with doing chores and washing bottles and doing a million loads of laundry. There is very little time to actually be alone and do nothing, or something mom enjoys doing.

Once the baby is here, a lot of moms look back on their pregnancy and regret not taking time to just be by themselves and do something they enjoy. We love our spouses, but there is nothing wrong with wanting to be on your own for just a little bit once in a while.

15 Enjoy Being Pregnant

Pregnancy is not easy, it is a hard journey and there is no shortage of things to complain about. However, like we said it goes by so quick and before we know it we have our baby in our arms and it is all over. This can cause some women to be very sad and emotional. Even though we complain, a lot of us really do enjoy being pregnant and we miss it when we are not pregnant anymore.

They really wish that they had spent time to just enjoy being pregnant. To enjoy their growing belly and the feeling of the little baby moving inside of them. If they could give advice to any other pregnant woman it would be to stop and enjoy it every now and then, because they will miss it.

14 Spend Time With The Older Children

This one goes out to all the women who are pregnant with older children at home. It is important to spend some time with your older children before the baby comes because you may not like it, but the relationship is going to change once the new baby comes. We are only one person, and newborns require a lot of attention, so it will be hard to spend so much quality time with your other children.

It is also a good idea to prepare them for the arrival of the new baby. Have conversations with them about the new baby and make sure they understand that this new baby does not change the love you have for them.

13 Go On That Date Night

A new baby will also change the dynamic you have with your spouse, it’s normal. The newborn days are crazy, hectic and exhausting so there is bound to be some frustrations. It is important to remember that you both are a team and that you will work together to make it all work. What will go out the window are those date nights.

It is nearly impossible to get a babysitter for a newborn, especially if mom is breastfeeding. Mom will be very hesitant to leave her baby with a sitter as well. This means that date nights will be put on hold for a little bit. It is always a good idea to fit as many of them in as you can before the baby comes, it is worth it.

12 Take A Childbirth Class

There are a lot of people out there who do not take childbirth classes anymore, and boy do they regret it. They may think that they know what to expect and that their bodies were made for this, so they don’t really see the need of spending time in a class learning. They regret this.

Childbirth is not a black or white situation, it comes in many colours and there are many things that could happen. It is always a good idea to take one of these classes. Another reason why so many don’t take these classes is because they don’t think of it and by the time they go to register, the classes are full. It is always a good idea to plan ahead and book a spot early.

11 Plan Financially

This article is not to say that pregnant woman does not plan for anything, because they do. They plan out the baby’s name, the nursery and they even make a birth plan. What they don’t plan for is how much it costs to have a baby. It is expensive. Diapers and wipes can quickly add up, and that is only a fraction of what a new baby needs.

It is important to sit down when pregnant and go through the finances and how much your baby needs. If you are able, it is always a good idea to start stocking up when pregnant. Buying things slowly will ensure you are prepared and that the financial hit will not be as big as soon as the baby comes.

10 Think About The Pets

We already covered how important it is to think about your older children when you are pregnant, but we can no neglect the other members of our family; the pets. Whether you have cats or dogs it is always a good idea to plan out how you will handle them when the new baby comes.

It is a good idea to talk to your pets’ vet before the baby comes, they will have a lot of information for you on how you can introduce the two of them to each other to make sure they grow up with the best relationship possible. Pets are no different than humans in the fact that they can also get a little jealous of the new attention being placed on the baby. The only difference is, this situation can be a little more dangerous if your pet decides to lash out.

9 Look For Childcare

This one seems like it is out of left field, but it is very important and should not be overlooked. When mom is expecting it is always a good idea to start looking for childcare. Depending on where you live, your maternity leave could be short or long. There is not much maternity leave offered to moms in the USA, so it is important to look early and secure a spot.

Even in Canada, where moms get one year off, the waiting lists for daycare are very long and sometimes if you don’t look while you are still pregnant, your little one may not get a spot on the list when it is time to go back to work.

8 Go To The Dentist

No one likes going to the dentist, there is no lie in that statement. Some people even have a strong fear of the dentist (this may or may not be me). It is very important to plan a dentist visit while you are pregnant. If you are worried about anything, you can always clear it with your OB before making the appointment. Chances are, you are fine to get a cleaning done while pregnant.

Pregnancy can have a negative impact on your teeth, so it is important to be extra vigilant about oral health when you are expecting. It is also something that you can take off your list so that you don’t have to worry so much about it when the baby comes.

7 Learn How To Do Kegels

Everyone always tells a pregnant woman to do Kegel exercises when pregnant, but not a lot of pregnant woman actually do them, and they will regret it later. A Kegel is a pelvic exercise that can be done any where at any time. It is quite simple. Mom will hold in her pelvic muscles, as if she was holding in urine. She will hold it to a count of 10 and then release and repeat.

These are incredibly helpful when it comes to strengthening the pelvic floor. It will help labour go a bit easier and it will also help with any incontinence issues that may arise before or after the baby comes.

6 Plan The Maternity Leave

Maternity leave is something that is different in every country. Some countries have it a little better than others. Planning the maternity leave is something that must be done while mom is still pregnant and there is a lot to think about. Mom will need to find out what her employer offers, and if it is paid.

Once she knows how much time she is entitled to, and at what compensation, she can start planning how she wants to go about it. This will be a decision that will likely be heavily based on finances, so it is a good thing mom has already done some of that financial planning that we already talked about.

5 Have A Hand In Their Own Baby Shower

A lot of moms choose to have a baby shower, it is a great way to celebrate the upcoming arrival of the new bundle of joy and stock up on some lovely gifts that your loved ones choose to shower you with. However, a lot of women regret not having a hand in planning their own baby shower after the fact.

It is common for someone other than mom to plan the baby shower, and it usually falls on her mother, sister or best friend to do all the planning. However, this does not mean that mom should not have a say at all. It is her baby shower and it is important that it is what she wants so that she can have a great time.

4 Write A Letter To Baby

This is one that a lot of women don’t really think of doing until the baby is here, and they regret it. A lot of women will deliver their baby, time will go on, and they will wish that they had written their little baby a letter. Sure, a letter can be written at any time, but there is a good reason why this letter should be written when a woman is pregnant.

When a woman is pregnant, her feelings will be a lot different than when she is at home with the baby, hungry, running on no sleep and in desperate need of a shower. She can include some notes from her pregnancy to help her remember her pregnancy and give her future child a glimpse into life before they were born.

3 Take Care Of The Home

Newborns take up a lot of time, actually they take up most of your time, so it is important to plan to keep up with the house when you are still pregnant. Nesting is something that commonly occurs to pregnant woman and that will take care of a lot of this, but it is good to plan ahead.

Don’t just think about everything that needs to be cleaned either. It is important to go through your house and think about any big home improvement projects or repairs that you would like done before the baby gets here. Getting these out of the way before the baby comes means mom will be a lot calmer and relaxed when she has a newborn to care for.

Pregnant or not, we are always told to drink more water. That our body needs it to thrive. The problem is, a lot of people don’t drink a lot of water at all, no where near the daily recommended amount. It is important that a pregnant woman actually plans to drink more water. Hydration is so much more important when mom is pregnant.

To help plan for this, mom can do a few things. Mom can get some really cute water bottles to use, which will make her more likely to want to use them to drink water. If mom does not like plain water, she can infuse them with fruit and other things to help give it a bit of taste. Mom should also keep a log to keep track of how much water she is taking in.

Eating healthy is something we don’t need to tell anyone is important during pregnancy. Everything mom puts in her body will help the baby grow healthy and strong. The problem is it is really hard to eat healthy when we live in such a busy world. It is easy for mom to grab something quick, which tends to not be the healthiest choices. Then there are the pregnancy cravings which are usually not the healthiest snacks.

Mom can do a bit of meal planning when trying to eat healthy. If mom has everything written down when shopping and cooking it is a lot easier to make sure the food she is buying, and cooking is right for the baby. If mom craves sweets, she should try some fruit instead of reaching for the candy bar.
