Chip and Joanna Gaines have taken the design world by storm, and one might say Joanna herself is credited with the Farmhouse style trends that are so popular right now. According to HGTV.com, it all started when “The Gaines met after they both graduated from Baylor University, and like all of their projects, fate played a role in bringing them together. Shortly after their wedding, the couple purchased, tore apart, and renovated their first building together, and Joanna opened a home accessory store called Magnolia."

Add the sweet relationship she and her husband have together, and it’s no wonder the world is in love with this family. Plus, they now have five kids on top of it all. So how do they manage to do it? And make it look easy and graceful at that?

“Hugs, cuddles, and plenty of physical affection are essential to a child’s emotional development. Joanna Gaines showers her children with snuggle and physical touch, which helps them feel their mother’s love in a real and tangible way,” shares CheatSheet.com on the Gaines parenting style. But of course, there’s more to parenting than snuggles. The Gaines also enlist a simplistic and practical approach when it comes to parenting. Keep reading for 20 things to know about Chip and Joanna as parents to five.

20 They Rose To Fame In 2013 Thanks To Their Show ‘Fixer Upper’

Chip and Joanna Gaines own and operate Magnolia Homes, a remodelling and design business in Waco, Texas, and "Fixer Upper" shows the process by which the couple turn dilapidated but potential-rich houses into showplaces that are helping revitalize whole neighborhoods throughout central Texas. Chip manages the construction and realty side of Magnolia and Joanna is the lead designer. They also act as part-time counselors to clients who can't see a structure's beauty beyond the blemishes. Combined, Chip and Joanna save homes that look hopeless, renovating the imperfect, and revealing them as what they were always intended to be,” writes HGTV.com on the show, Fixer Upper. The first episode aired in April of 2013 and the final episode aired in May of this year.

19 But They Have Always Been Hard At Work On Their Dreams

It’s easy for people to assume that Chip and Joanna were an overnight success, but that is far from true! “In 2003, we bought our “Little Shop on Bosque” and opened the first Magnolia Market. In that store, I developed and sharpened my design style and skills, grew as a business owner, and gained much needed confidence in Magnolia Market and myself. After Chip and I had our first two kiddos, we made the tough decision to close the Market and focus on growing and raising our family. During this time, we really honed in on Magnolia Homes, our construction business, for many years. This is where we were able to learn the construction side of things, and we loved the idea that we were “making Waco beautiful one home at a time.” This work was meaningful to us, and we worked together for many years as a team; Chip in construction, and myself in the design. Soon HGTV’s Fixer Upper came along...” shares Joanna on Magnolia.com.

18 They Now Have 5 Kids

The couple now have five children together. The couple are parents to Drake (age 13), Ella Rose (age 11), Duke (age 10), Emmie Kay (age 8), and Crew (about 5 months old). “Up until recently, the Gaineses had two boys and two girls, in a boy-girl-boy-girl pattern. But they recently added another family member, a boy, bringing their family up to five children,” shares CountryLiving.com on the family of five. And when it comes to parenting five kids, Chip and Joanna make it seem seamless, thought I’m sure that’s probably not the case. Keep reading to figure out just how they do it.

17 They Have 3 Boys…

Drake, Duke and Crew are the three Gaines boys. And if you think three boys is slowing Joanna down, think again. “Still, the arrival of son Crew has given Joanna "an extra kick" in her step."It woke me up a little bit. Life was doing its thing, and this baby — typically you feel tired, but this baby, he's just like my second wind," she shared in the new issue of People magazine,” shares Today.com. Even though there is a pretty big age gap between crew and his big brothers, I’m pretty sure the crew will in unstoppable force in the years to come.

16 ...And 2 Girls!

Along with the three boys, are the two girls, Ella and Emmie. “...You sow seeds early on and work hard to be intentional and then over time you move on to new lessons and challenges. Then one day you look up and the seeds you planted in your little children’s hearts are now in full bloom. Be encouraged today to keep pressing in and tending to their hearts. It will be worth it,” Joanna shared in a sweet Instagram post earlier this year. So I would say it’s safe to say she pretty has the mom of girls thing covered.

15 Chip Is Generally The Strict One

He might be the fun parent, but it turns out Chip is also the strict one.”“I grew up in an environment that was pretty much ‘back by dark’ — [my parents] didn’t generally know what we were doing, and it was all good, clean fun,” Chip, 43, tells PEOPLE. “So I thought, ‘Oh, I’m gonna be a wild parent.’ “He continues, “And when I got to be a parent, I don’t know what it is about it … I feel a little bit like a drill sergeant sometimes. Some elements of my personality, as a parent, I’m not real crazy about,” reports People.com.

14 While Joanna Is A Bit More Laid Back

And Joanna tends to be a bit more laid back. In the aforementioned interview with People Magazine, Joanna added, ““It’s funny, I’m a little more laid back than I thought I’d be,” she says. “[There are] certain things that I really care about, but I think the funny part, with Chip, is just the video games, the TV. That’s where he kinda gets a little strict. It’s, ‘You go play outside.’ Are you surprised Joanna is the more laid back one? I know I was! At least they have a good balance and even each other out though, and by the looks of it, they both seem to know how and when to have fun with the kids too.

13 They Wouldn’t Be Opposed To More Kids

Five and counting? That’s right, the couple is definitely not opposed to having more kids.”Joanna also told People she truly thought she was done having children before her fifth. “It’s sweet how, even in the most unpredictable ways, we’re given exactly what we need for that exact moment in time,” she said of having baby Crew. Joanna once joked that she’d also be the type of woman to still be having babies at 45 and hinted the couple may not be done having kids yet,” shares CheatSheet.com. Chip has also stated that the crew needs another girl to even out the numbers, so who knows what the future has in store for the Gaines family.

12 They Have Old Fashioned Tendencies

The couple is old fashioned in many ways, and their parenting is no different. And when it comes to screen time, the Gaines family makes sure to set boundaries. “Despite starring in one of the most popular shows in HGTV history, there is no way to watch it in the family home. This started way back when Chip and Jo first got married and their pre-marital counselors challenged them to go six months without a TV. “Then, six months later we looked at each other and said, ‘How about another six months?’” Joanna recalled to Qpolitical in 2016. “And it just became one of those things where, 12 years later, we still don’t own one,” shares Mother.ly.

11 They're Awesome At Spending Quality Time With Each Child

Perhaps one of the most special things Chip and Joanna prioritize in their parenting is spending time with each child. If you follow the couple on their respective Instagram accounts, you will notice they frequently post about themselves doing certain activities with one or several of the kids. This wasn’t uncommon to notice on their show, Fixer Upper, either. The couple has made sure each child has solo time with each parent. Another way Joanna makes sure her kiddos know they are well loved? By cooking for them. “Whether I'm making cereal for breakfast or a big, fancy dinner, I want them to know that celebrating them in small ways in everyday life is a big deal to me. When Chip and I are traveling a lot, the first thing I want to do when I get home is cook. I want my kids to have the security that when mama's home, there will be a good meal,” Joanna shared on Mother.ly.

10 And Dance Parties Are Highly Valued In Their Home

Just because Joanna appreciates the value of rules it doesn’t mean the Gaines household is all work and no play. Both parents take time out to be silly with their kids by engaging in games, impromptu dance parties, and tons of other fun activities. And since laughter has positive benefits for both adults AND kids, it probably helps her be a more laid-back mom, too,” shares CheatSheet.com. Yes, kitchens are for dancing, and the Gaines family understands and practices this rule accordingly. So if you are looking to add a little Gaines to your lifestyle, try a good old fashioned dance party and you will be well on your way!

9 They Are Passionate About Involving Their Kids In Their Business Endeavors

Though they're still young, Chip and Joanna have already found ways to include their children in their home improvement empire. At their new Magnolia Table restaurant, visitors will find special menu items like "Ella's Dipping Donuts" and "Emmie's Grilled Cheese." The same goes for Joanna's paint line with Kilz. The collection features four hues named, "Ella Rose," "Emmie's Room," "Duke Gray," and "Sir Drake." We're sure it won't be long before Crew is included,” writes CountryLiving.com. Aside from naming things after them, if you’ve watched Fixer Upper before, then you know the kids are included in the family business as well!

8 And They Are Raising Their Kids To Have A Love Of The Outdoors

If you have watched even one episode of Fixer Upper, then you know this family loves the outdoors! And as we learned above, Chip loves to make sure the kids get outside! “I tell the kids that you are probably not going to get a cell phone. We want to teach our kids that life happens outside of these devices. It's just a simple thing to go outside and connect with nature, play with your friends and get dirty,” shared Joanna in an interview with ETOnline.com. With kids these days gravitating more and more to indoor play, the Gaines outdoors approach to raising kids is very refreshing to me.

7 They Encourage Their Kids To Be Creative

Father’s Day is the perfect chance for me to brag on my kids. I love that each has their own “thing”—photography, fishing, gymnastics, sports....they never stop making me laugh. I'm so proud of each of them! “ captioned Chip in a sweet Father’s Day shout out to his kids on Instagram.com. You can follow Chip @chipgaines and Joanna @joannagaines on Instagram for your daily dose of their children’s creativity. From getting their kids outdoors and in the gardens to encouraging them to play boundlessly without relying on modern technology, it’s obvious they both care about nurturing their children’s creativity, and it’s a definitely a beautiful approach to parenting.

6 They Have Like, A Lot, Of Pets

About 60 if rumour is correct! Hound dogs, herding dogs, goats, cats, horses, turkeys, chickens, cows, pigs, oh my! The Gaines family does not mess around when it comes to family pets. And again, if you were ever a fan of the show, you know that Chip loves a good surprise pet for Joanna.”And now for a quick update on the home front. Chip continues to increase our pet population. He recently surprised us all with a new kitten AND a new puppy. Oh, sweet Chip…” Joanna wrote on a blog post on Magnolia.com back in May of this year.

5 The Couple Met In Joanna’s Dad’s Tire Shop

“Before the couple met in 2001, Chip frequented a Firestone tire shop owned by Joanna's dad. "Her dad made the mistake of putting a pic of the family behind the counter at his shop," Chip told Pop Sugar. Chip has admitted to returning to the shop until he got the chance to meet Joanna. Little did he know, Joanna was about to fall for his sense of humor — and the rest is history,” writes CountryLiving.com. Chip has also stated that after seeing the picture of Joanna, he knew he would marry her someday, before he had even met her. Seriously? Could this duo get any more sweet?

4 And They Have Now Been Married For 15 Years

Chip and Joanna were married on May 31, 2003. The couple were wed at the Earle-Harrison House in Waco, TX. “The couple chose the historic Earle-Harrison House as the venue for their May 31, 2003, ceremony. According to Joanna, the Greek Revival home "looks an awful lot like the place we had our first date,” shares GoodHouskeeping.com on the couples venue choice. Joanna also opted for a traditional crown and rose bouquet for her wedding day. “Carrying a big bouquet of red roses (no succulents yet!), Joanna opted for a crown to hold her veil and low bun in place, with a simple necklace and earrings completing the look,” adds GoodHousekeeping.com.

3 Their Business Name Is Tied To Their First Date

“You know what’s interesting about a magnolia tree?” he told his kids on an episode of Fixer Upper. "One of mama and I’s first dates I climbed up a magnolia tree and I pulled her off a magnolia bloom and I gave it to her,” shares CountryLiving.com. Too bad we can’t all use our first dates for branding inspiration, can you imagine!? But the couple has really been able to capitalize on their brand, with magnolia being at the foundation. And really, doesn’t it make us all love them even a little bit more that their brand is built into the foundation of their relationship, starting with their first date?

2 The Couple Just Announced Their Own Network

Yes, Fixer Upper is over but you better believe the Gaines already had something else up their sleeve. “"We signed a non-disclosure, and it said -- quote-unquote -- you can tell your mother, but that's it," Chip Gaines joked after Fallon asked if they would ever return to TV. "So, Mom, I just wanted to make a quick announcement: We are coming back to television,” writes CNN.com on Chip and Joanna’s interview on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon when the couple announced their new network. “The couple are pairing again with Discovery, the network that owns HGTV, he said. "Discovery is thrilled to confirm that we are in exclusive talks with Chip and Joanna Gaines," the network confirmed in a statement. "The Gaineses are exceptional people, true authentic storytellers and creative visionaries who will nourish millions of people with quality, family-friendly programming accessible on a 24/7 network and across all screens. Stay tuned ... working out the final details ... more to come soon!” adds CNN.com.

1 Chip & Joanna Are Everyone’s Favourite #CoupleGoals

These celebs seem to have parenting down to an art form, but we can’t look past them as a couple! And perhaps the foundation of their relationship is what makes them such great parents. “Chip and I were going down memory lane today and we stopped at one of our first houses. I remember crying when Chip said we were moving in- it was dumpy and it smelled bad. We fixed it up and fell in love with it. To this day, if you ask us what our favorite house we ever lived in we both go back to this little white 800 sq ft home. We were broke and were forced to be creative with our resources and we were proud as punch about this place. Most of what I learned creatively stemmed from this little fixer upper. Small house or big, rich or poor- own the space you live in and love what you have,” shared Joanna on an Instagram post that featured the couple in front of the mentioned house. In the Gaines world, love is truly all you need, so perhaps that’s why the couple has excelled at everything they do.
