Most millennials grew up watching Hilary Duff star in the iconic Disney show Lizzie McGuire, or they at least knew all the lyrics from her first album, Metamorphosis. Needless to say, Hilary was a huge part of many people's childhoods, which is why it’s so weird to realize she’s all grown up and has a family of her own.
Unlike many former child stars, Hilary has always been pretty tame. Perhaps that’s why she started a family so young. The celebrity married hockey player Mike Comrie, of Canada, in 2010 after three years of dating. She subsequently gave birth to their only child, son Luca, in 2012. The couple eventually decided to end their marriage in 2014, citing irreconcilable differences. Still, the exes have only had nice things to say about each other, with both maintaining the separation was amicable. And they make co-parenting look like a breeze!
Eventually, Lizzie — ahem, we mean Hilary — found love again! The singer-actress has been dating musician Matthew Koma since 2017. The pair first met after working on her 2015 album Breathe In, Breathe Out. The pair welcomed a daughter this past October, whom they gave the unusual moniker of Banks Violet. Keep on reading to discover how Hilary has been adjusting to her starring role as a mom!
20 She Took Parenting Classes With Kim Kardashian
Now, we don’t think any fans expected Hilary to be running in the same crowd as the Kardashians. But we guess L.A. is a small place!
Back in 2014, reports said that Hilary and Kim were taking the same parenting class after they were seen arriving at the venue with their kids in tow. Kim’s eldest daughter North was only 11 months at the time, while Hilary’s son Luca was two.
There’s no word on if Kim and Hilary chatted while enjoying the class. However, Hil did used to party with Khloe Kardashian back in the day (there are still photos floating around!), so we’d be surprised if the two celebrities didn’t at least say hi to one another.
19 She Lets Her Son Play With Makeup
Some parents feel strongly about the types of things their kids play with- makeup is for girls, while cars are for boys. However, more and more millennials are becoming more open-minded about gender roles -- Hilary is one of them.
She’s been open about the fact that she has no problem with her son experimenting with her makeup. Maybe she has the next James Charles on her hands!
“Turned around to see Luca had used my lipstick as warrior paint on his face,” she wrote on social media this past January after discovering Luca had gotten into her makeup collection.
18 She Kisses Her Kids On The Lips
Most of the time, it seems that Hilary can do no wrong! But she did rub some of her followers the wrong way when she uploaded a photo of her kissing her then-3-year-old son on the lips while at Disneyland. Although she didn’t respond to the criticism at the time, Hil has since revealed she has no time for such naysayers.
“First of all, he was three. Kiss your kids, and anyone who doesn’t like it can hit unfollow,” she told In Style last August. “People just have all these crazy judgments. [It’s] best to not listen and laugh it off.” She added that she’ll certainly continue to kiss her kids.
17 She Goes On Vacation With Her Ex-Husband
Talk about a modern family!
Fans don’t need any more proof that Hilary and her ex-husband Mike are on good terms than the fact that they’ve been on vacation together since splitting up.
Back in 2014, the exes made headlines when they were spotted vacationing with their then-1-year-old son at an unnamed tropical destination. Hil posted multiple photos of the group to social media, making it clear there’s no animosity between her and Mike — some fans got so excited that they thought it was a sign the two were getting back together.
16 She Feels Bad When She Goes Away For Work
Despite being a young mom-of-two, Hilary has continued to build her acting resume throughout the years. For the past few years, the celebrity has had a starring role on Younger. And while she’s adamant about loving acting, Hilary has admitted that she sometimes feels guilty when she has to go away for work.
“[He’s asked,] ‘Why do you have to work so far away? Why do you have a job? Why does my other friend’s mom not have a job?’” she told Huffington Post about what she said when her then-6-year-old asked why she travels so much. “It’s tough. One, I want to be like ‘Hey, you know all that stuff you have? This house that we get to live in? This is why I have a job.’ But that doesn’t mean anything to them.”
15 She Ate Her Placenta In A Smoothie
It seems like more moms than ever are trying to eat their placentas after giving birth in order to harness the health properties it's said to have - and Hilary is one of them. After giving birth to daughter Banks last fall, the celebrity revealed that she consumed her placenta via a smoothie. Casual, right?
“Most delightful smoothie I’ve ever had,” she said on Dr. Berlin’s Informed Pregnancy podcast. “I haven’t had a smoothie that delightful since I was ten. It was calorie-filled with juice and fruit and everything delicious.” She’s been having the rest of it in ice cube form, avoiding the capsule route because she’s heard “placenta burps are not ideal.”
14 She’s Honest About The Struggles Of Splitting Custody
Hilary split up with her husband Mike when their son, Luca, was still pretty young. And although the celeb says she and her ex have remained on amicable terms, it doesn’t make splitting custody any easier.
"Some of my friends tell me, 'God, it must be so nice, you get a break from your kid because you share him,'" Hilary has said to Redbook of Luca’s custody schedule. "It's true, I do get a break. I had Luca by myself for a few weeks, no help, when Mike was on the road, and when he got home I was like, 'He's yours! Bye!'"
More recently, she added it’s been harder since welcoming her second child since it means the siblings are separated for the time being.
13 She Goes To Her Sister For Parenting Advice
While not as famous as her younger sister, Haylie Duff has also dabbled in acting throughout the years. And now, she’s also navigating motherhood just like her sister (Haylie is a mom to two daughters: Ryan and Lulu).
Haylie has said that she and her sister rely on each other for parenting advice and during those times they just need to vent to someone. “We try to listen to each other and be there for each other,” she told People. “Everyone has so much advice all the time, so we really just try to support each other whenever we feel like venting or talking something out.”
12 She’s Turned Down Roles Because Of Her Kids
Even though Hilary has continued to work during and after both of her pregnancies, don’t think that the celebrity hasn’t made sacrifices for her family. When she was first pregnant with Luca in 2011, it was revealed that she had to turn down a party in Bonnie & Clyde, despite being very interested.
However, the star still got a payday - Hollywood Life reports that Hilary had a clause in her contract that said she would still get $100,000 for her time even if she didn’t end up acting in the movie. This evidently left the movie producers upset and it even halted production.
“I don’t wanna give them any more press than they’ve already gotten off me … I think [my] baby is a little bit more exciting,” Hilary told TMZ about the drama at the time.
11 Teaching Her Kids To Swim From A Young Age
Many parents say that teaching your kids to swim is a necessity since it's technically a life skill. Hilary clearly agrees as she’s been taking her kids in the water since they were wee ones.
Back in 2013, for instance, Hil posted a series of photos of her, her sister Haylie, and an 11-month old Luca in the pool. The tyke looked completely comfortable in the water, proving this wasn’t his only time splashing around.
While we doubt that Hilary has gotten a chance to try the pool out with daughter Banks given how young she is (and the cold weather recently!), we’re hoping for some ultra-cute summer-baby pics later this year.
10 She Calls Herself Her Kids' “Chauffeur”
Most moms know the pain of driving their kids to and from school as well as doctor’s appointments and extracurricular activities. Just because she’s a celebrity doesn’t’ mean that Hilary isn’t familiar with this struggle, too.
One time, the actress actually joked that she feels more like her son’s chauffeur than his mom. "It feels really good to not be on someone else's schedule—besides Luca's. I'm basically his chauffeur!" she said, E! News reports. She added that, even though she only has Luca 50 percent of the time (he’s with his dad the other half), she doesn’t feel like she gets a proper break from motherhood.
9 She Couldn’t Do It Without Her Partner
Hilary has spoken time and time again about the importance of having a good support system. When she first became a new mom, the actress said her biggest supporter was by far her then-husband, Mike Comrie. And although the two aren’t together anymore, she says they have a great co-parenting relationship that makes things easy.
“I think I have to say, my husband. It's a big one because he's there every day all day and that's a huge growing thing, too -- having a baby with your husband or your partner -- a lot of growing happens there,” she once told Parents. “You have to have a lot of patience, and he sure has with me! He's really wonderful with Luca, and I feel blessed to have him.”
8 She’s Learned The Importance Of Prioritizing
Hilary has admitted that she used to be too hard on herself when she first became a mom. Learning the importance of prioritizing (and letting things go) has helped her adjust to her hectic life.
“[After Luca was born,] I felt that I had to do everything. If I wasn’t the one doing everything, then I was not being the best mom I could be,” she told Huffington Post. “I think throughout the journey of being his mom, I’ve learned how to prioritize a little bit better and not spread myself so thin, so I’m excited to do it again actually. Round two is a lot more casual.”
7 She’s Brutally Honest Online About Motherhood
One thing fans have long been praising Hilary for is her openness on social media about the realities of parenthood. Between the cute shots of her kids, Hil likes to get real with her fans about how tired or frustrated she is.
Last January, she went on a lengthy social media rant where she discussed the challenge of breastfeeding baby Banks while getting her son Luca to school on time.
“Ok a few thoughts,” she captioned a tired looking selfie. “Real talk this is the first day I had two kids on my own on a school morning. Breastfeeding and making breakfast, getting 2 kids and myself dressed and packed and out the door while tripping over 4 dogs and feeding the ... fish was not easy. But I did it.”
6 Her Kids Do Her Makeup
Okay, we’re not sure if Hilary actually leaves the house after she lets her kiddos have their way with her face. But there has been more than one occasion where the celebrity has shown off her son attempting to apply makeup to her face.
She posted a video to social media showing the then-two-year-old trying to put lip gloss on his mom. Unfortunately, he sorely missed and it got all over Hilary’s face except on her mouth. “Luca the makeup artist,” Hillary captioned the sweet video.
There have been plenty of times since then that Luca has been caught dabbling with his mom’s makeup. So she may very well indeed have a budding makeup artist on her hands.
5 She’s Accepted That She’ll Always Worry
Moms know that worrying is a constant feature of their job. While Hilary has yet to describe herself as an easy-going or relaxed mom, she’s said that she reminds herself that worrying is natural and it’s not going to change anything. All moms worry, after all.
"You’re always worrying," she told Today. "Everyone wants their kids’ lives to go perfectly, which is obviously not possible all the time. But it’s so fun. I’m so lucky." We’re wondering if this means that Hilary is open to more babies in the future (we sure hope so!).
4 Pregnancy Hasn’t Been Kind To Her
So many celebrities make pregnancy out so seem comfortable and magical. And while it can be that way for some mamas-to-be, it wasn’t like that for Hilary Duff. Particularly during her most recent pregnancy, the actress was open about the challenges she faced… and the fact she couldn’t wait to get the baby out!
"Man... pregnancy is hard. Giving love to all mamas who make it look effortless... this journey is hard as [heck] and also incredibly special,” she wrote on social media. "Sick of getting up 9 times a night to pee and looking at this weird body in the mirror that is not my own at the moment."
3 She Gave Birth After Her Due Date
Need more proof that pregnancy hasn’t been kind to Hilary? During her second pregnancy, the celebrity didn’t go into labor until after her expected due date! We bet she was starting to feel pretty uncomfortable at that point.
The star let fans know she was getting irritable in October when she posted a picture of her burgeoning belly with the caption “Yo… your hotel stay is up little girl.” Prior to this, the celebrity had made several social media posts about how uncomfortable she was feeling.
Although we’d love Hil to have more mini-me’s in the future, we have a feeling she’ll enjoy not being pregnant for a while.
2 She Knows That Moms Need “Me” Time, Too
Although she loves motherhood, Hilary has been honest about needing a break from her kids every now and then - and she’s totally okay explaining that to her kids.
“I want to feel human and I don’t want to mom all day every day,” she told Huffington Post about the time she explained to her son why she works. “And I think it’s OK to explain that to them. I learned that with Luca. [I’ve explained that] Mom has had a job since I was a teenager and that’s a really big part of my life. I try to be there for you as much as you need, but working is part of being an adult.”
1 She’s Always Wanted More Kids
We know that Hilary just had baby no. 2 a few months ago, but fans can’t help but wonder if and when she’ll expand her family again. For a while, it seemed like the celebrity was satisfied just being a mom-of-one as it was only her and Luca for so long. But the singer has been adamant about wanting more kids - just when the time is right.
"I definitely want to do it again," Hilary said in 2015, E! News reports. "But right now, it's time for me to focus on work and the things I love to do outside of him and find what that balance looks like." Given how happy she seems with Mathew Koma, hopefully, Hillary felt that the time was right when she had baby no. 2.
