Kat Von D, aka Katherine von Drachenberg, found fame with her early appearances on Miami Ink, but it didn’t end there. Now, she’s famous worldwide for not only her tattooing prowess (just check out her shop, High Voltage Tattoo, in Hollywood, California), but also for her makeup, her clothing designs, and her outspoken veganism.

Of course, not everyone is a fan of Kat—and she gained a few fans and lost just as many when she began posting online about her pregnancy and ideas about motherhood. Whether you’re a fan or a critic, there’s a lot to know about Kat and her as-yet-unborn baby.

First, did you know Kat got married in early 2018? After many failed and publicized relationships, Kat finally seems to have found love. She and her husband, Leafar Seyer, wed in an extravagantly goth ceremony, and are now well on their way to building a life together with their soon-to-be baby boy.

She hasn’t exactly been tight-lipped about her plans for her pregnancy, birth, and baby boy, but Kat is clear about her opinions and her boundaries when it comes to her growing family. That said, here are 20 things we finally know about her pregnancy, most of which came from Kat herself.

20 Was She Pregnant At Her Wedding?

Kat and her man got married in February of 2018, and she’s noted that their little one is due around November, following the couple’s favorite holiday (Halloween, of course) and during their fave season. So that might just mean Kat was pregnant before the pair had their wedding, right?

She hasn’t publicly divulged her due date, or mentioned whether she was pregnant when the pair tied the knot, but the timing does add up.

Of course, we’ll have to wait until baby Reyes arrives, whether that’s on or around his due date, before we’ll know for sure whether the timeline adds up.

19 She Will be Continuing To Travel

Most mamas swear off travel farther into their pregnancies, but Kat did take a quick trip to Spain while she was pregnant. Of course, she probably got the okay from her healthcare team, and she wasn’t too far along that an early delivery would have been a concern. Still, she was feeling well enough to fly—that’s saying something about her ability to tolerate pregnancy without puking her guts out. Then again, she’s no stranger to world travel—something that Kat may have to take a break from when her baby arrives—at least until the little one is old enough to tag along.

18 She Will Be Raising The Baby Vegan

It’s no secret that Kat is vegan herself—she’s been very vocal about it. Not only does she publicly claim to be vegan, but she’s also been part of animal rights campaigns, created a vegan shoe line, made her makeup line cruelty free and vegan, and is often outspoken online when she’s had a delicious vegan meal. Of course, she’s earned plenty of criticism for it, but she also noted in her pregnancy announcement that she and her hubby were going to raise their baby vegan. To people who are unfamiliar with a plant-based diet, that might sound extreme. But if Kat breastfeeds her baby and introduces healthy plant foods when he’s old enough, there’s nothing wrong with raising a veg baby!

17 She Stopped Discussing Some Of Her More Divisive Views After Receiving Criticism

After her initial Instagram post about reconsidering vaccines for her baby, Kat took to Facebook to explain more in-depth. She explained that she’s not pro or against vaccines, but rather, she’s concerned about safety on an individual basis, and that she doesn’t agree with the billion-dollar industry’s morals. She also noted,

“So, perhaps before any of you feel inspired to [...] send ill-will our way, I hope you would try and understand that this is our first child together, and we are simply just trying our best.

Lastly, I don’t plan on continuing this topic, and have no interest in fighting anyone. As much as I hate doing this, I will be turning off the comments on this post “ And after that post? Kat dropped the mic—she no longer publicly comments on her vaccine views, or really any other specifics about her pregnancy.

16 She’s Not Out For Advice

Even as she publicly announced her pregnancy and intention to raise her baby a specific way, Kat noted that she’s not out for advice or opinions. Despite garnering tons of comments on her social media posts, Kat hasn’t addressed her followers’ opinions on the matter. After all, she’s not taking anyone’s advice on her body or her baby, and that includes both negative and positive comments. Though Kat has faced some media backlash over the years—including her highly publicized split from Jesse James—she’s finally figured out that silence is the best response to naysayers.

15 She Was Inspired By Birth Documentaries

While some critics may claim Kat’s taking the wrong approach to parenting even before her boy arrives, she’s at least given her birth plan a lot of thought. In fact, she told Us Magazine that she and hubby Leafar had done a ton of research, which included watching Ricki Lake’s documentary The Business of Being Born.

Afterward, they were inspired by the “life-changing” film to find a midwife and made the decision to ditch their team of doctors.

The couple may be far from mainstream, but at least they’re well-informed when it comes to the important pregnancy and birth decisions.

14 She Will Be Skipping The Epidural

As “unnatural” as many of Kat’s critics consider her, thanks to her many tattoos and unconventional appearance, she’s going all-natural with the baby’s birth. She plans to have a pain medication-free birth experience, she told Us Weekly.

She hopes to avoid interventions and have a “natural” birth, which apparently doesn’t involve wearing a hospital gown.

Of course, the star may lean toward gothic décor and heavy metal music as opposed to dim lighting and “calming” tunes, but she has the right mindset as far as achieving the delivery she wants. And, of course, hubby Leafar is apparently totally on board with the mom-to-be’s decisions.

13 She Is Shying Away From Doctors

Part of Kat’s birth experience involves having midwives, so she sees them regularly every few weeks. She gushed on Facebook about her great midwives, who are from the LA area. It’s not that strange to hear of celeb moms hiring their own care teams outside the hospital—after all, what pregnant celebrity wants to make her way past paparazzi for every checkup—so it wouldn’t shock us if Kat had her own personal midwives visiting her home for prenatal care. The thing is, as natural as Kat is hoping to keep her pregnancy, she’s being proactive about seeking medical care rather than going the DIY route.

12 She Is Hoping For A Home Birth

Of course, having midwives doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be birthing at home—midwives can work in hospital birth centers plus standalone centers. But Kat is specifically having a home birth with her midwives attending. No word on exactly what home that will be in—Kat has her current abode, plus the couple has recently purchased an old Victorian home. Regardless, it would be interesting to see the spot where Kat plans to labor and birth her baby. With the couple’s eclectic home décor tastes, and penchant for everything gothic, there likely won’t be any pastel-colored birth affirmations lining the walls!

11 She Gushes Over Baby

While critics have been shooting daggers at Kat over her public denouncement of routine vaccination for all babies, she’s refreshingly upbeat and positive about her progressing pregnancy. On her personal Facebook page, she’s shared videos of her and her husband enjoying their monthly midwife appointments. They listen to the baby’s heartbeat, take measurements, and snap pics and videos for posterity. Though it’s a shame some of Kat’s angry followers aren’t as enthusiastic about the baby’s health, so far the tot seems to be growing and developing normally. And whatever you thought about Kat’s past relationships (including marriage), she’s found a supportive partner in Leafar.

10 She’s Speaking Out About Her Experiences

After generating a huge amount of interest in her pregnancy via that Instagram and Facebook debacle over vaccine choice, Kat went on to speak with a doctor about her natural pregnancy and birth intentions. She went on Dr. Berlin’s podcast for the interview, explaining more about her natural-minded experience and her hopes for her pregnancy and birth. She’s no doubt inspired many mamas to look into natural alternatives for their birth experiences, a positive side effect of all the drama surrounding her announcement.

9 Junior Is Dad’s Namesake

Although Kat tends to refer to her husband as Leafar, that’s actually his stage name. His birth name is Rafael Reyes, but he goes by Leafar Seyer for media purposes. So it wasn’t too surprising that Kat and her man announced that their baby boy will be named after pops—the name his dad chose, not the one he was born with. But if you think about it, this move continues to follow the couple’s unconventional choices, and it likely won’t harm little Leafar to carry his dad’s name, along with Leafar Sr. and Kat’s reputations in the creative world.

8 She Is Having A Symptom-Free Pregnancy

Though she’s clearly progressing normally through her pregnancy, including a sufficient increase in lbs for the baby’s health, Kat told Us Magazine that she hasn’t had any pregnancy symptoms—other than a “huge belly.” That’s good news for her, and likely explains how active she’s remained with work and other pursuits while growing her baby. From traveling to Spain to launching a new shoe design, Kat’s stayed busy. After all, if you don’t have aches and pains and morning sickness, you can get a whole lot more accomplished—even if you do have to waddle to get where you need to go.

7 Leafar’s Learning A Lot

If you thought that Kat is making all her own decisions about the pregnancy and birth of her son, that’s not entirely true. Instead, she and her husband are teaming up to figure things out and navigate new parenthood. On her Facebook page, Kat notes how involved Leafar is in the pregnancy and how he’s been by her side watching birth documentaries, researching vaccines, and everything else expecting parents do. While Leafar reportedly has a daughter from a previous relationship (he told Medium she’s 21 and they’re estranged), he’s getting truly hands-on this time around with his and Kat’s first son.

6 She Is Hoping For A Halloween Baby

As Kat told Us Weekly, she and Leafar “love the fall because we wear black,” and that “Halloween is the best time.” And while their baby likely won’t arrive before Halloween, the pair will enjoy the season with him once he arrives. Baby Leafar is due sometime around November, but with his parents’ love of everything black, matte, and pointy, you can be sure his nursery is absolutely dripping with goth elements. And even if he were a spring baby, the pair would still deck him out in all-black and have him listening to dad’s decidedly alternative music tracks.

5 A Working Mom Doesn’t Rest

Scrolling through Kat’s Facebook feed from the last few months, you can see that she hasn’t taken a break from work, really at all, since announcing her pregnancy. Instead, Kat’s stayed busy with rolling out new products for Kat Von D Beauty, continuing to tattoo a select few clients at her shop (and apparently at home), and developing new designs for her vegan shoe line. And before that, she had her wedding to prep for and plan—which may have coincided with her early pregnancy. Of course, it’s probably partly due to the fact that she hasn’t had any symptoms that she’s able to ramp up her work schedule before the baby comes.

4 Kat’s Getting Plenty Of Pampering

If you thought Kat was working too hard while waiting on her baby to arrive, you are quite fortunately incorrect. Kat still takes plenty of time to get pampered, thanks in part to her husband’s attentiveness. Leafar reportedly spoils Kat, but she also shared a snap of the pair having a spa day, complete with vegan sushi, to celebrate Leafar’s recent birthday. The pic just proves that Kat and Leafar recognize how rest and relaxation is a crucial part of their lives, no matter how busy they are with their careers. Of course, every parent out there knows they better enjoy it while they can!

3 Kat Won’t Vax

There wasn’t much interest in Kat Von D’s pregnancy at first—until she publicly declared that she and her husband were looking into vaccines. She hinted that they needed to do some research, which set some former fans off. Though she noted that she and her husband are not “anti-vaxxers,” she’s since been inundated with negative comments for the decision. And yet—Kat hasn’t publicly said she won’t vaccinate her child, just that she needed to do some research. In reality, research is something that all parents should do no matter the subject when it comes to their children’s health and wellbeing.

2 She’s Still Rocking Makeup

Unlike most pregnant mamas who can’t be bothered to slather on makeup, Kat hasn’t put down the makeup brushes yet. She’s long been known for her edgy style—tattoos not included—and adventurous looks, but she hasn’t slowed down because of her pregnancy. Some of her Facebook photos include shots of her feet, posing in mile-high heels, while others show her demonstrating makeup application with items from her own beauty line. Sure, she’s fresh-faced sometimes, but she hasn’t given up rocking makeup just because she’s pregnant—a credit to the apparently pregnancy-safe vegan and cruelty-free products she has always created.

1 She Is Hoping For A Finished Home

One of Kat’s Facebook posts was about a house she and Leafar had purchased, a Victorian classic that suits their goth tastes perfectly. However, the home wasn’t complete. Rather, the pair is in the midst of a huge renovation project, which Kat noted she was hoping to have finished for their new family in the coming months. No word on the timeline for the home, but you can bet there’s a nicely appointed nursery in the works for baby Leafar. As far as baby-friendly décor? We’re sure Kat is making sure it vibes with the rest of the gothic-style elements in the home.
