20 Times Kate Middleton Took A Page From The Duggar Family Handbook

It might illogical, but according to a lot of critics and fans, Kate Middleton has a lot in common with the Duggar sisters. Sure, they come from two totally different worlds, but when it comes to marriage, motherhood, and of course, money, the Duchess of Cambridge has ripped a few pages from the Duggar handbook. In other words, it’s safe to say that they share the same values and vision for their families.

From the outside, Kate Middleton looks nothing like a Duggar. We know that and we wouldn't even dare compare her appearance or her lifestyle to the female members of reality television’s most notorious family. But from the inside, many people believe that the Middletons operate the same way as the Duggars.

They might live on opposite sides of the pond, but they share the same mission: to marry well, to produce plenty of children, and most importantly, to live a comfortable lifestyle. And from what we can tell, both Kate and her sister Pippa Middleton have managed to accomplish those goals. In some ways the Duggars have too, especially considering that they are like the royalty of the state of Arkansas!

Here are 20 reasons why Kate Middleton is like the Duggars.

20 No PDA In Public

For years now, a lot of people have been wondering the same thing: why don’t the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge ever show any public display of affection? The answer is simple. They don’t want to be lovey-dovey in front of the cameras. If they still have any spark or passion in their marriage, they save it for behind closed doors. Interestingly enough, the Duggars are the opposite.

They are not allowed to touch one another in any way during their courtship. They save their first kiss for their wedding day! But after they get married, it’s a whole different story.

They just can’t keep their hands off of one another, and boy are they not embarrassed to show it, either. Married Duggar couples have no problem showing as much PDA as possible, while Prince William and Kate Middleton are the kinds of people who like to keep a healthy distance from one another.

According to People Magazine, Jill Duggar put it this way, “We want to save the physical side of our relationship for our wedding day and not go further than we should. Obviously, you can kiss and not [do it]. It’s about setting a higher standard so you don’t struggle [with temptation].”

19 About A Big Family

Kate Middleton has made it no secret that she’s always wanted a big family. Because she grew up with one brother (James) and one sister (Pippa), she always envisioned her own children growing up with several siblings. And so far, it looks like her family dreams are coming true. Now, that’s not to say that she wants a family the size of the Duggars, but so far she’s managed to have more kids than any other royal in the last 50 years. As a matter of fact, the last royal to have more than two children was Queen Elizabeth.

With that being said though, it’s hard to say if Prince William is on board with all of Kate Middleton’s baby plans. Back in 2011, he didn’t sound very keen when he was asked about having a big family. In fact, it didn’t sound like he was looking forward to it at all.

“I think we'll take it one step at a time," Will said, in his first interview with Kate, according to Harper’s Bazaar. “We'll sort of get over the marriage first and then maybe look at the kids. But obviously, we want a family so we'll have to start thinking about that.”

18 And A Comfortable Lifestyle

Let’s face it: when you marry a prince or a member of the British royal family, you are set for life. Even if you do end up getting a divorce, you’ll end up living a rather comfortable lifestyle, one way or another (of course the only exception has been Sarah Ferguson, but we will save her story for another day). Kate Middleton has access to all of the royal jewels in Britain and there’s no way she’s letting go of it.

The Duggars, of course, feel the same way. They aren’t the type of women who will meet the first man they see or fall in love with for that matter.

Everything is carefully planned and coordinated by their parents, Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar, when it comes to their future suitors.

According to Café Mom, here’s Michelle’s number one piece of advice for her daughters: “Be available, and not just available, but be joyfully available for him. Smile and be willing to say, 'Yes, sweetie I am here for you,' no matter what, even though you may be exhausted and big pregnant and you may not feel like he feels. 'I'm still here for you and I’m going to meet that need because I know it’s a need for you.'"

17 Get The Media Attention

She might not admit to it, but if there’s one thing that Kate Middleton absolutely loves, it’s all the attention that she’s gotten from the media in recent years. And the same can be said about the Duggar family. A day doesn’t go by that they are in the headlines for one reason or another. If that weren’t enough, their extended family members also like to get in the gossip. Take Amy Duggar for example. She wants nothing to do with the Duggar lifestyle, but she’s done a great job of piggy-backing on their family, if you know what we mean.

Also, let’s not forget the crazy family members and cousins who like to spill their tea to the media. Speaking about the rumors how she was born in wedlock, Amy Duggar told her fans on Instagram, "The tabloids are telling the truth, my mom and dad did have me out of wedlock. Just because we are Christians doesn't make us perfect, it just makes us forgiven. Just because I share the Duggar name doesn't mean my life is perfect! God knew my uncle would have a hit show and that somehow I would be apart of it. He knew my parents' story would be told. How amazing is that?! Your testimony is everything."

16 Wardrobe Matters

When it comes to the things she wears, Kate Middleton knows that fashion is everything. After all, she is considered to be one of the most stylish women in the world. And while there aren’t blogs dedicated to the Duggar women and their style, they have specific fashion rules they have to adhere to as well.

The key word for both the Middletons and the Duggars is modesty. But at the same time, they do an excellent job of keeping modest but still making waves for the things they wear. I mean, it’s a scandal each time a Duggar female wears pants!

Speaking about her family’s modest uniforms (yes, we will call their wardrobe uniforms), Michelle said this (according to Romper): “By keeping those private areas covered, there's not any "defrauding" going on. My kids are taught the definition of defrauding as stirring up desires that cannot be righteously fulfilled. We don't believe in defrauding others by the way we dress. And different people may be defrauded by different things. We can't control their thoughts, but we're responsible before God for our part. And so years ago, I just felt between me and my Lord that I really needed to dress modestly.”

15 Always Under Watchful Eyes

When you are a member of the British royal family, you have to make sure that you don’t commit any missteps in public. It’s very important that you watch every move you make, as the entire world is watching you at all times. Now, this might not pertain to the Duggars in the same way, but they have to be very careful with how they act in public, too. For example, they have to be on their best behavior at all times. That’s mostly because they don’t want TLC to get off their lifeline.

Also, the Duggar men have been taught to revert their eyes during what they would like to call “dangerous” situations. And by that, we mean whenever they happen to see a woman wearing a tank top in public or worse, a bikini on the beach!

According to Cosmo, Michelle has said, “That's a signal to the boys, and even to Dad, that they should nonchalantly drop their eyes and look down at their shoes as we walk past her... It's meant to help keep the guys' eyes from seeing things they shouldn't be seeing. By using the single-word signal, the warning can be given quietly and discreetly.”

14 The More Kids, The Better

Kate Middleton just gave birth to her third child, a boy named Prince Louis. And while it might seem like their family is already complete, some critics out there believe that Kate might not be done yet. In fact, there’s a strong suspicion that she might even have a fourth child in the future. After all, both she and her hubby Prince William are still young. They can certainly afford all of the help they can get.

And if there’s one thing that Kate Middleton absolutely loves, it’s getting pregnant and showing off her royal baby bump to the world. She would rather sit home with her children than have to go on yet another royal engagement or make a public appearance with her husband.

“Personally, becoming a mother has been such a rewarding and wonderful experience. However, at times it has also been a huge challenge,” Kate said back in 2017, according to Vogue Magazine. “Even for me, who has support at home that most mothers do not. Nothing can really prepare you for the sheer, overwhelming experience of what it means to become a mother. It’s full of complex emotions of joy, exhaustion, love, and worry, all mixed together.”

13 Don't Forget To Marry Well

For Kate Middleton, Pippa Middleton, and the Duggar females, it all seems like they have one goal in common: and that’s to marry well. Let’s face it, these women wouldn’t settle for anything less. They know they need their men to help support their families and give them everything they need at home. And when you’ve got a prince or a terribly wealthy financier by your side, it can easily feel like you have the entire world at your fingertips. They didn’t have arranged marriages, but they surely knew what they wanted when they got it.

Also, Kate’s brother James Middleton has made it no secret that he is very proud of his sisters’ individual achievements.

And by that, we mean their ability to marry well and set themselves for long, comfortable lives with their significant others.

He told Grazia Magazine in an interview back in 2016, “My sisters were very successful and confident. It was, 'Oh, you are Pippa's brother! Are you Catherine's brother?' And so I was automatically put into the top sports teams and academic sets," he explained. "But I was a bit of a squirt when I first started, so then it would be, 'Are you sure you're a Middleton?'”

12 Say Little, Do Even Less

For the Middletons and the Duggars, the key to their success is to say as little and do as little as humanly possible. That way there’s less of a chance that you will be criticized by the media or heaven forbid, Queen Elizabeth or even Michelle Duggar.

As a matter of fact, Kate Middleton hasn’t really said much since she married Prince William back in 2011. She certainly doesn’t get personal in her interviews and she also doesn’t reveal more than she has to. In other words, her statements are always well crafted. Thankfully, we’ve got her brother to spill all the tea for us, if you know what we mean.

Speaking to Grazia Magazine, Kate’s brother James Middleton said, “I used to be first up in the morning to make sure I could get to the papers and rip out any stories about my sister, so nobody would see them and there would be no conversations about them."

With regards to their romance, he also added, “It was a gradual progression. Of course, there was a sense of, “Oh my God, things are changing,” and “Why are so many people interested in us?”As a family, I don’t think there is any particular “policy” on [handling it]. Although one is probably not to speak to the media – ironic that I’m saying it in an interview!”

11 Family Always Comes First

Kate has made it no secret that she puts her family first, always. And by that, we mean the Middletons. She’s defied Queen Elizabeth and the royal family by spending Christmas with her mother and father at Middleton manor than at Sandringham Castle with the Queen. That’s because she wants to do what makes her happy. And if she’s happy, the rest of the family is happy.

She’s not going to push her parents and her family to the side just because she’s the future Queen of England. They are also a very important part of her life and her children’s lives, too.

And as we all know, mental health is a cause that is very near and dear to Kate Middleton’s health. She, along with Prince William and Prince Harry have worked hard to erase the stigma surrounding mental health. A happy family is a healthy family, both in a physical and emotional sense.

“If any of us caught a fever during pregnancy, we would seek advice and support from a doctor,” Kate said, according to Vogue. “Getting help with our mental health is no different. Our children need us to look after ourselves and get the support we need.”

10 Don't Be Afraid To Be A Rule Breaker

As we mentioned about, the family is very important to Kate Middleton. Needless to say, family is also the core and the forefront for the Duggar family, too. But at the same time, both Kate and the Duggars are rule breakers in their own way.

They might have a strict set of rules they must abide by at all times (according to both Queen Elizabeth and Michelle Duggar, respectively) but from time to time they rebel and do things their own way. It’s easy to see how someone like the Duchess would get naughty on occasion. But at the same time, she does emphasize that there’s no right or wrong, especially when it comes to raising your family and being a parent. In other words, mistakes are expected and ok.

“There is no rule book, no right or wrong; you just have to make it up and do the very best you can to care for your family,” Kate once explains in a speech, according to Vogue Magazine. “For many mothers, myself included, this can at times lead to a lack of confidence and feelings of ignorance. Sadly, for some mothers, this experience can be made so much harder due to challenges with our very mental health.”

9 But Expect Rough Patches

Truth be told, no marriage is perfect. There might be some that fare bad weather better than others, but it would be a huge lie to say that no one has their rough moments.

Marriages and relationships are hard work. You have to continue to work on them, just like you would a garden. It needs food. It needs nourishment. It needs sunlight. And it needs constant attention.

And it doesn’t matter what your titles are, you need to do all of those things if you expect to go the distance in your marriage. This applies to everyone, from the Middletons to the Duggars.

Believe it or not, we actually agree with what Michelle has to say, especially when it comes to dealing with rough patches in your marriage. According to the Hollywood Gossip, she once said, “There are going to be those times in your marriage where you might not always agree; you might not see things eye to eye and sometimes you may need a trusted third party to be a counsel for you in your marriage. Feel free to go to that trusted wise counsel that you both respect and get counsel when you need it. We have all been there.”

8 Make Your Man Happy

They say that a happy wife will usually result in a happy marriage. But let’s not forget that relationships are always a two-way street. Both partners have to be equally happy in order to make things work. That’s why Kate Middleton does her best to make sure that Prince William’s needs are always met. Now we won’t go into details, but their marriage is no different than everyone else’s.

They might be royalty, but they are still husband and wife, even though they are also the future King and Queen of England. And if there is one thing that the Duggars understand very well, is that their marriage always comes first in their relationship.

If you are unhappy in your relationship, then there’s a strong possibility that you will be very unhappy in other parts of your life, too. In other words, it’s a domino effect. In order to have a healthy family, you first have to have a healthy marriage.

According to the Hollywood Gossip, Michelle once put it this way, “Anyone can fix him lunch, but only one person can meet that physical need of love that he has, and you always need to be available when he calls.”

7 Lower Your Expectations

From the outside, Prince William and Kate Middleton might look like a perfect couple. They are always smiling and waving to the cameras. They always appear at royal engagements and red carpet appearances by each other’s side. And most importantly, they do their best not to give away anything with their body language. But with that being said, we don’t know what goes on behind closed doors at Buckingham Palace, and we are not going to pretend that we know, either.

But according to Michelle, the only way a marriage can survive is if you lower your expectations. And that’s something Kate Middleton surely knows. She might have married her prince charming, but that doesn’t mean her marriage is a permanent fairy tale. They have their ups and downs just like everyone else. Plus, people change over the years and you can’t expect to continue things the way they were during your first few years, when it was nothing but bliss.

To put it simply, perfectionism kills the romance. According to People Magazine, here’s what Michelle has to say about keeping things real in your marriage: “Expectations ruin relationships... many of us are trained to be detail-oriented and strive for perfection at work, but bringing that attitude home can be a relationship-killer.”

6 Be Careful Of What You Say In Public

As we all know, Kate Middleton is very careful about the things she says and even the things she does in public. But from time to time she does let certain things slip. During her join interviews with Prince William, they will often engage in a little banter, with Kate sometimes making fun of him or pointing out his quirky little habits. She never flat out criticizes him though.

And according to Michelle Duggar, that’s a huge no-no, especially if you want to keep your marriage intact. It’s a marriage rule that we are sure many people would agree on.

While you can definitely say things behind closed doors, you shouldn’t criticize, put down or blatantly mock your spouse in public, or even to other family members for that matter.

It does major damage to your relationship, especially in an emotional sense.

According to People Magazine, Michelle put it this way, “Don’t ever talk about things in front of your children that are supposed to be between you and your husband only. Don’t ever put your husband down in front of your children or other people, especially your families. Talk privately. We praise publicly, but we correct privately.”

5 Baby Names Are A Big Deal

When it comes to both Kate Middleton and the Duggars, baby names are a HUGE deal. They will keep their fans waiting for days before making the big reveal. Actually, let’s back up for a minute there: having their babies is a HUGE deal, announcing the gender of the baby is a HUGE deal, and of course, revealing the name is the biggest deal of them all. They also love talking about their kids in interviews. It’s what Kate even does best!

"It's very special having a new little girl…I feel very, very lucky that George has got a little sister," Kate said in a documentary back in 2015, according to Redbook Magazine. "The Queen was really thrilled that it was a little girl, and I think as soon as we came back here to Kensington she was one of our first visitors here."

Kate added, “She always leaves a little gift or something in their room when we go and stay, and that just shows her love for her family. She was very supportive. The fact she took the time to make sure that I was happy and looked after for that particular occasion, which probably in everything that she's doing is a very small element, it shows just how caring she is really."

4 Learning From Their Parents

Both Kate Middleton and the Duggar sisters have made it no secret that they are very close to their parents. As a matter of fact, they still depend on them – and especially in an emotional sense – even though they have families of their own. They go to their parents for advice on everything from parenting, to marriage, and even everyday stressful situations. That’s why both the Middleton and Duggar sisters have elected to live close by to their parents. That way they are always there if they need them.

According to Us Weekly, Kate has said,

“My parents taught me about the importance of qualities like kindness, respect, and honesty, and I realize how central values like these have been to me throughout my life.

That is why William and I want to teach our little children, George and Charlotte, just how important these things are as they grow up. In my view, it is just as important as excelling at maths or sport.”

Jill Duggar seems to agree. According to People, she said: “There are a lot of things that seem different than I thought they would be. I have just asked my mom a lot of questions about what is normal and what to expect.”

3 It’s All About Balance

Here’s another thing that Kate Middleton and the Duggars have in common: it’s all about balance. They know it’s important not to dedicate too much to just one thing in their lives. Their families are important, but so are their marriages and the work they do outside their home. Ironically, Kate and the Duggars don’t do much work, unless you can classify as what they do as royal volunteering. The last time we checked we weren’t sure just how hard of a job being a reality television or social media star was, either.

“Personally, becoming a mother has been such a rewarding and wonderful experience,” Kate said during her speech the Best Beginnings charity’s film launch, as reported by Us Weekly. “However, at times it has also been a huge challenge. Even for me, who has support at home that most mothers do not."

Jessa Duggar has also emphasized the importance of open dialogue with your spouse. According to People, she said: “It’s important not to build walls or turn away from hard topics. Not like, ‘I am going to take my feelings and close off from you and build a little wall there.’ The ‘I’m-going-to-show-you attitude’ really hurts. It’s always best to open up and talk about things.”

2 Deal With Your Problems Behind Closed Doors

If there’s one thing that the Duggars are good at, it’s dealing with their problems behind closed doors. The same can be said about the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. You are never, ever going to hear about their arguments or spats in public. What goes on at home, stays at home. You don’t air your dirty laundry in public, no matter how much you might be getting offered from the tabloid magazines. And you certainly don’t talk about it with your friends outside of the home, either.

Also, the Duchess often tends to be very coy when it comes to revealing her true feelings about her husband.

Speaking about her beginnings with William, Kate said, according to Redbook, "I went without William, so I was rather apprehensive about that. I think there is a real art to walkabouts. Everyone teases me in the family that I spend far too long chatting. So I think I've still got to learn a little bit more and to pick up a few more tips I suppose."

Michelle Duggar also had this to say about setting boundaries in relationships, according to People: “Emotions get heated the closer you get. You’re like two magnets being pulled together. You need boundaries.”

1 Image Is Everything

And last but not least, both the Middletons and the Duggars know that their image is everything. It’s without a doubt that they could easily pull out of the public spotlight and live quiet lives away from the celebrity spotlight. But let’s be honest here: that is never going to happen. At least not in this lifetime. The Duggars became reality television stars for a reason.

Also, keeping up appearances is the number one concern for the royal family. If there’s one thing that Her Majesty hates, it’s bad publicity and public fodder. Speaking about his grandmother and her image, Queen Elizabeth, William said, according to Redbook: "Growing up, having this figurehead, having this stability above me has been incredible. I have been able to explore, understand, slightly carve my own path. I greatly appreciate and value that protection."

Kate, meanwhile has said: “I can remember being at Sandringham, for the first time, at Christmas. And I was worried what to give the Queen as her Christmas present. I was thinking, 'Gosh, what should I give her?'. I thought, 'I'll make her something.' Which could have gone horribly wrong. But I decided to make my granny's recipe of chutney,” as quoted on Brainy Quotes.
