Does anyone else wonder why so many celebrities are known for choosing weirdly unique names for their offspring? Is it a ploy at gaining attention in the media? Do they think their children will keep their wacky names or do they expect the kids to change their names when they reach adulthood? Kind of like a reverse of what others do when they choose an exciting and glamorous screen name to replace the boring name their parents gave them. It is, after all, very easy to dump your name these days.

The Kardashians have to be at the forefront of any weird baby name list, just as they crave to be at the forefront of any media attention. Kim, Kourtney and Rob all made the list with their half sister Kylie Jenner there too. The third Kardashian sister (Khloe) is pregnant too and no one expects that baby name to be normal. After all, who keeps up with the Joneses in that family? It's like a toddler throwing a temper tantrum, believing any attention is attention.

Other celebrities are on the list too though, with creative and downright odd baby names. Some have somewhat reasonable explanations, others not so much. All are unique though, you have to give them that! Just in case you are looking for an unusual name for your new baby, here is a list.

20 Birdie & Cricket Silverstein

You get a bonus of two for one on this choice, as I'm not sure which is weirder or sillier. Birdie and Cricket are the names of the daughters of Busy Phillips and Marc Silverstein. These parents obviously must be nature lovers, although saddling your children with these unique names is going a bit far. Can't you just hear them asking “See the birdie, Birdie?” or instructing “Listen to the cricket, Cricket.”

I have heard of Birdie and Cricket as nicknames, but not as real names and not in the same family. Busy is a nickname for Elizabeth which might have come from 'busy as a bee” explaining a possible origin of the nature loving theme. I guess Birdie and Cricket can create a little sibling rivalry and compete on whose name is better. Or worse.

19 Journey River Green

Journey River is the newest edition to the family of Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green. These two names are unique enough to compete with his brothers' very original monikers of Noah Shannon and Bodhi Ransom. Although I must admit River is becoming very popular recently, so not so original.

So, where do these names come from? All are quite spiritual in nature which is a common theme in many baby names these days. Journey means a spiritual voyage, while Bodhi means enlightenment in Buddhism, and Noah is a very common biblical name. As for the boys' middle names, Shannon is probably a nod to Megan's Irish roots. Ransom and River are both old English names.

Here's hoping this new baby keeps his parents together in their journey moving forward. Although headed for divorce a few years ago, (after two children) the couple reconciled within a year. Not long after they were back together they announced they were expecting their third child.

18 Aleph Portman-Millepied

Aleph is the unique name that Natalie Portman and Benjamin Millepied chose for their son. Although Aleph is the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet, it also means strength and humility. Natalie Portman was born in Jerusalem and raised Jewish in the USA by her Israeli father and American mother. Her husband Benjamin Millepied, a French choreographer, was born and raised in France, but converted to Judaism shortly after their marriage.

Natalie Portman and Benjamin Millepied also have a daughter. Her name Amalia which means “work of God” in Hebrew, not to be confused with the name of George Clooney's wife Amal that means “hope” in Arabic. Although both of these names are derived from the Greek word Amal for “work.”

Neither child has a middle name, but with unique names like Aleph Portman-Millepied and Amalia Portman-Millepied, who needs a middle name? Middle names appear to be over rated these days.

17 Bluebell Madonna Halliwell

Bluebell Madonna is the daughter of Geri Halliwell, also known as Ginger Spice of Spice Girl fame, and Sacha Gervasi, a British journalist and director. However, from all accounts (media reports) Gervasi does not appear to be involved much in Bluebell's life since he has remarried. The name Bluebell was chosen because Geri saw lots of bluebells the spring she was pregnant. The fact that bluebells are a rare and pretty, precious flower had Halliwell convinced the name would be perfect for her new daughter. The middle name of Madonna was chosen for, you guessed it, the one and only singer of the same name, Madonna.

Geri's second child, this one with new husband Christian Horner, also has a unique name in Montague (Monty for short) George Hector. The late George Michael of Wham fame, a close friend of Halliwell's, was the inspiration behind this unique choice of name.

Two unique names for two very cute children!

16 Racer Maximillian Rodriguez

Racer Maximillian is only one of four children belonging to American filmmakers Robert Rodriquez and Elizabeth Avellan Veloz. Racer's siblings also inherited unique names. They include brothers Rebel Antonio, Rogue Joaquin, Rocket Valentino and sister Rhiannon Elizabeth. Someone obviously likes the initials RR. Perhaps because the KK version was already taken by the aforementioned Kardashian clan. Maybe the fact that their mother was born in Venezuela has something to do with the unique name choices.

Whatever the reason for their unique names, all four children are currently involved in acting and film making. Racer and Elizabeth are actors., Rocket is a film director, and Rogue is both an actor and film director. It might be tricky remembering who is what.

It sounds like a family tradition in the making despite the confusing names, This makes perfect sense as their father has had success as a producer, director, editor, and screenwriter as well as a musician. Their maternal grandfather founded the first private television station. And, to top it off, their mother was the co-founder (with their father) and is the current co-owner and Vice President of Troublemaker Studios.

15 Huckleberry Gryls

With a brother named Marmaduke, Huckleberry Gryls may have a weird and unique name, but should fit right into his family. His father Bear (a nickname for Edward Michael) Gryls obviously loves to read children's stories. Everyone recognizes these names. If you don't, ask your parents or grandparents, they will remember. Both Huckleberry and Marmaduke were fixtures in the kind of entertainment we old folks used to read and laugh at in books and newspapers.

Huckleberry Fin was a fictional character in Mark Twain's novels The Adventures of Tom Sawyer way back in 1876 and The Adventures of Huckleberry Fin in 1884. A TV series aired more recently in the 1980's. Marmaduke was the star of a long running comic strip about a Great Dane (dog) and his human family. In 2010, a movie with the same name surfaced starring Owen Wilson, Emma Stone, William H Macy and other famous names.

14 Future Wilburn

Future Zahir is the son of rapper Future, his fourth child, with four different baby mamas. This could make Future's (both of them) future very complicated. Future (the dad) just recently settled a custody arrangement for Future (the son) with his ex girlfriend Ciera who just happens to be pregnant again but this time with her new husband that is not Future.

To keep things straight, we may just have to call Future (the dad) by his real name Nayvadius. Especially when rumor had it (has since been denied) that a fifth baby mama (who just happens to be friends with one of the other baby mamas) was pregnant and due around the same time as Ciera.

To keep things complicated, it is rumoured that at least one of his baby mamas is currently suing him for refusing to pay child support. Although Future appears to be a talented musician, nominated for and winning several awards, it might be a good idea to keep any more babies out of his future.

13 Lyric Sonny Roads Goldberg

Lyric Sonny Roads Goldberg is the weird, unique and ? wonderful name belonging to the son and third child of actress and director Soleil Moon Frye and internet entrepreneur Jason Goldberg. Apparently, lyric is a word that kept coming up throughout the later stages of the pregnancy. Lyric's parents assumed it did so for a reason. Sonny is a little easier to explain as Soleil is the French word for sun. Sonny was also the nickname of Soleil Moon Frye's late father. Roads is simply a name both parents love with plans for a nickname of Roadie. So why not put them all together?

With siblings (sisters) named Poet Sienna Rose and Jagger Joseph Blue not to mention a mother named Soleil Moon Frye, the newest addition of Lyric Sonny Roads fits right into this family of unique if not downright weird names.

12 Story Elias Elfman

Story Elias Elfman is the son of Jenna and Bodhi Elfman. Both actors, these parents have a fairly unremarkable (pun intended) story. They had been together for many years, focusing on their careers, before the baby bug bit and infected them. Jenna is best known for her role in comedies the sitcom Dharma and Greg. Bodhi is known for his part in two TV series, Touch and Criminal Minds.

The bigger story in their lives might be their involvement in Scientology. Both Jenna and Bodhi are long time members of the controversial religious group, in fact Bodhi introduced Jenna to it when they first met. Rumors have it though that Jenna is much more outspoken and possibly even downright confrontational about it than her hubby. At least they are on the same page. Many celebrity (and other) couples have left the church or even split up over Scientology views, especially those surrounding raising children.

Makes you wonder if their child Story (and his brother Easton Quinn Monroe) are happily involved in the Scientology story.

11 Rainbow Aurora Madison

Rainbow Aurora is the very colourful name for the beautiful daughter of the equally beautiful Holly Madison. Holly is a reality TV personality, best-selling author, model and showgirl/playboy bunny in reverse order chronologically. Rainbow's daddy is Pasquale Rotella, founder and CEO of Insomniac, well-known in the electronic dance music (EDM) industry.

Rotella was recently successful in fighting charges of bribery, conspiracy and embezzlement, so now has more time to spend with his family that includes Rainbow and her little brother Forest. These parents must be real nature lovers to name their children Rainbow and Forest, although this too is a trendy theme in baby names. Forest's middle names Leonardo and Antonio take a break from that theme, thankfully for his sake.

My guess is this nature theme is aimed at the “green” movement started by those of us concerned about the future of our environment. There might be a few better ways to show your concern though.

10 Coco Arquette

Coco is the daughter and only child of Courtney Cox and David Arquette. Coco is (unfortunately for her) her real name, not just a nickname. You probably guessed that the name Coco comes from the first two letters of Courtney and Cox. Coco's middle name is Riley, a much more common name.

The parents wanted to name the baby Courtney after both her mother and her maternal grandmother, but according to Jewish (the Arquette family is Jewish) tradition you cannot name a baby after someone still living. So, Courtney became Coco. David Arquette admits he loves the name Coco since he was obsessed with Courtney Cox since he met her.

Apparently the obsession did not last though, as the couple split when their daughter was eight years old. Arquette has remarried and has two sons, Charlie and Augustus, making Coco a big sister.

9 Apple Blythe Alison Martin

Enough of the Kardashian connection (for now) Apple Martin is another celebrity child stuck with a unique and weird name. Who knows what parents Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin were thinking when they picked (pun intended) Apple. Maybe they purchased a new apple computer or maybe as their first born they knew she would be the apple of their eye.

Apple does have two middle names, chosen in honour of both of her grandmothers. Blythe after Gwyneth's mother and Alison after Chris's. Traditional names for a traditional gesture, making up for the wackiness of the first name. That sound more in keeping with their British heritage.

Apple also has a brother named Moses, so perhaps Gwyneth and Chris consulted with the Bible when choosing names for their children. In case you don't remember your bible stories, Apple (the fruit, not a girl) was significant in the garden of Eden and Moses was the baby left in the bullrushes by his mother.

8 North West

The first of three children (so far) for Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, daughter North West is named after two of the four possible cardinal directions. Or possibly the four main points on a compass. Maybe Kim and Kanye are, or were, directionally challenged. Maybe they were lost and needed to find themselves. Whatever the inspiration or reason for labelling their child with such a strange name, hopefully they don't get tired of explaining themselves. And hopefully North doesn't get sick of saying “yes, like the directions, North West.”

With a moniker like North as a first name and West as her last name, you would think her parents would consider a soothing middle name. Nope, that didn't happen. No middle name was registered on the birth certificate belonging to North West. Maybe her parents did not want to muddy the compass reading by adding a confusing middle name between the two directions.

7 Saint West

If North West wasn't weird or different enough of a name, her brother Saint West is keeping up with the Kardashian tradition. With his father thinking he is Jesus, perhaps Saint's parents are grooming him for a role in religion. Have we ever had an American Pope?

Just in case North West felt left out without a middle name, Saint West does not have a middle name either. Maybe because most (common) male names already have a saint affiliated with them. Both Kanye and Kim were given middle names at birth. His is Omari and hers is Noel. Either of those would have worked as neither is common or boring. Perhaps Kim and Kanye felt such a striking, unique first name did not require a middle name. I suppose not, I doubt (hope) there will ever be a second Saint West to confuse him with.

6 Chicago West

Onto the third, and for the sake of the sanity of those that admire traditional cute names, hopefully the last baby produced by Kim Kardashian and Kanye West. Although when you do not carry and birth your babies yourself you can have as many as you want. Unlike her brother and sister, Chicago was not carried by Kim Kardashian. Due to health reasons, her parents decided to go the surrogate route.

Just like her siblings, Chicago was not graced with a middle name, although she did rate a second and even a third syllable to her name. As a guest on the Ellen show just before Chicago was born, Kim revealed she and Kanye were thinking of another one syllable name. Ellen's suggestion of Elle would have been much prettier, but maybe too pretty. Chicago, the name of Kanye's home town, is more in keeping with their tradition of choosing gender neutral names.

5 Pilot Inspektor Riesgraf Lee

Pilot Inspektor is the weird and unique name Jason Lee and Beth Riesgraf labelled their son with. This poor kid may be receiving mixed messages on what his parents want him to be when he grows up. A pilot or an inspector. Maybe Inspector Gadget was a favourite show for his parents. Whatever the inspiration for the names, talk about destiny. A pilot named Pilot or an inspector named Inspektor. Wow, that's planning ahead!

Last names based on occupations was very common to our ancestors, but apparently first names based on occupations has also recently become a theme. Not necessarily a recommended one, but a common theme none the less. Years ago it was understandable, an easy way to distinguish between family names. With all the inspiration for names available today from books, movies and even Google, why this theme has become popular for first names is not well understood. Cuter occupational first names within this theme include Baker, Mason and Cooper.

4 Dream Renee Kardashian

As promised, (or threatened, depending on how much you like the clan) another Kardashian parent has made the weird but unique baby name list. Rob Kardashian (the only brother in the family) and Blac Chyna joined the club by naming their baby daughter Dream. This story is seriously twisted, but some people believe family is everything. Speaking of family, Blac Chyna has a son with Kylie Jenner's ex boyfriend Tyga. This child is King Cairo, another unique and weird name in the (extended) family.

Unlike Kim and Kanye's children though, Dream does have a middle name. Her birth certificate reads Dream Renee Kardashian. Their lives may seem like a bad dream, however, as Rob and Blac Chyna have split up with her filing a restraining order on him. They have recently settled on a child custody arrangement however, so maybe the bad dream is getting better.

3 Puma Sabti Curry Badu

Puma is only one of the weird but unique names chosen for the children of Erykah Badu or Erica Abi Wright, her offstage name. The meaning of Puma'a first name is obviously mountain lion. Her middle name Sabti is Arabic for patient. Puma's unique names are not to be outdone by her older brother's names Seven Sirius Benjamin and younger sister's names Mars Merkaba Thedford. All three children have (different) rappers for fathers, perhaps the reason for the unique choices of names. After all, everyone knows that rappers have great imaginations.

Erykah Badu's extensive and impressive career roles include AMA and grammy award winning singer, songwriter, record producer, disc jockey, actress, holistic healer, doula and fashion icon. Those incredible achievements and three children make for one busy mother.

At the age of thirteen, Puma herself appears to have inherited her mother's award winning voice, recently wowing an audience of friends, family and other admirers by singing Happy Birthday to her mom.

2 Sir Carter

Sir is one of the twins recently born to Beyonce and Jay Z, little brother to Blue Ivy. His twin sister is called Rumi. Sir is aptly, if somewhat strangely, named as the other male in the family. Rumi is named after Beyonce's and Jay Z's favourite Persian poet of the same name. Blue Ivy is not exactly a common name either, and I cannot think of another Beyonce or Jay Z, so the twins' unique names fit right into this family.

Also different, or maybe not, as this appears to be another current trend, is the absence of middle names. Perhaps the quest for the perfect, unique first name has replaced the need for the customary middle name.

It appears all new parents are trying to up the ante in choosing baby names. Everyone wants to be unique and just weird enough to bring attention to and arouse curiosity in our social media oriented world. Gone are the days of the age old tradition of naming your baby after a parent or grandparent.

1 Reign Aston Disick

This is the last Kardashian affiliated name on the list, thank heavens. The unique name of Reign Aston Disick was chosen by Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick for their third child together. Reign is a baby brother for Mason Dash and Penelope Scotland.

Kourtney and Scott chose Mason for their first son's name because Kardashian in Armenian means stone worker or mason. Dash is what Kourtney's father Robert's nickname was, short for Kardashian. Penelope was named after the character in The Odyssey although Mason called her “sister” for the first while, then her name was shortened to P. Her middle name of Scotland is after her father Scott. Reign was changed from Rain for a boy to go with Aston which means king. Two regal sounding names.

Unique names are so much nicer and actually quite clever when they have a meaning behind them.
