Trigger: Child death.
A miscarriage is a traumatic event that can devastate a family horribly. But if you've suffered from multiple miscarriages, it can cause you to lose faith in ever having kids of your own. If you're lucky enough to eventually have a rainbow baby of your own, then you know how much of a relief it is. But what happens if your surviving baby is suddenly caught up in tragedy?
This is what happened to Demi Petrowski and Zachary Hasheme, who suffered from six miscarriages before having daughter Zariah Hasheme. They had given up on starting a family until their little girl came into the world healthy and happy. Unfortunately, two-year-old Zariah was left in a hot car by her nanny, 41-year-old Tammy Brooks. Brooks had meant to drop the toddler off at daycare but claims she forgot and drove right to work instead.
Due to Brooks' actions, little Zariah was left inside a hot car during a hot day in Hobbs, New Mexico; a town where temperatures are said to climb as high as 30 degrees Celsius. It wasn't until several hours later when Brooks realized that the little girl was still inside her car. This happened when she had finished running some sort of errand.
It was around 1:30PM local time when a 911 call was placed about Zariah being left inside Brooks' car. Rescue crews arrived shortly after and did everything they could to save her life, but their efforts proved to be in vain. Zariah was pronounced dead at the scene, and an autopsy will be conducted at some point.
Zariah's heartbroken parents are beyond destroyed by their toddler's sudden and preventable death. They also don't buy Brooks' excuse for her actions.
"I heard Demi screaming on the other line saying that Zariah's dead, and I didn't know what to do," Hasheme said. I mean, you can forget to bring a pen with you, but it's kind of hard … to forget about a kid in the car."
The couple's cousin, Stephanie Wilkinson, set up a GoFundMe for them to help cover funeral costs for Zariah. It had a goal of $2000 USD but has managed to raise $3280 USD as of today. It's still accepting donations, so you can donate if you're able to.
Brooks has been arrested and charged with abandonment or abuse of a child resulting in death. She's currently being held inside Hobbs City Jail while pending arraignment. It's unknown right now if she's retained an attorney.
