Alanis Morrisette opened up about what she describes as her unconventional parenting style, which includes practicing attachment parenting. During an appearance on Katie Lowe’s podcast ‘Katie’s Crib,’ Alanis discussed parenting her three children, sons Winter, 13 months, and Ever, 9, as well as 4-year old daughter Onyx. She explained that attachment parenting has allowed her to develop a natural, strong bond with her children. But Alanis says she feels the parenting trend has also positively impacted other area of her life, including professional and personal relationships.

“For me, attachment parenting is, on a very basic level, eye contact, skin-on-skin, responsivity, gentleness,” Alanis said. “The word ‘attunement’ is [important] in parenting but also in marriage and best friendship and professional relationships… If we’re not attuned to each other and we’re missing each other like ships passing, there’s not a chance for that deep connection that will be the hotbed for their whole life.”

The Canadian singer-songwriter also discussed how she’s been educating her children, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic in which many families have had to adapt to remote learning. Alanis says she’s always taken a less-than conventional approach when it comes to teaching her kids, saying it’s been a process of “unschooling them.” She prefers to let them learn on their own initiative and find what interests them.

Of course, however, Alanis says she’s open to her kids pursuing traditional forms of shool. But until then, she’s content letting them go at their own pace. Alanis explained, “When Ever says to me sometimes, ‘Mom, what if I want to get my doctorate?’ or whatever, I just say, ‘Yeah, whenever you want to go to school, you’re gonna go to school. And if you want to just keep learning outside of that context, then you will.'”

Alanis explains that part of her learning philosophy not only means allowing her kids to learn as their curiosity is piqued – it also means she and her husband have to be ready to answer their queries when they come, no matter how late or inconvenient. “If Ever wakes up in the middle of the night and asks me a question, I’m not gonna blow him off, ’cause this is the time he’s gonna learn about that dinosaur,” Alanis shared.
